OpenSUSE Wireless :: NetworkManager Does Not Run Connection At Boot

Jan 6, 2009

I'm using OpenSuse 11.1 (but it applies also to 11.0) on a Dell XPS, NetworkManager and scpm to manage profiles. I configured wireless network without problems and all runs perfectly. The annoying problem is that the wireless connection doesn't start at boot. Also by clicking on the NetworkManager applet networks are not displayed

But, as soon as I launch network configuration from Yast without do anything other, magically the wireless network is recognized and the PC connects to it.

It seems that the network configuration from Yast activates NetworkManager to connect or it activates the interface or the hardware.

Ubuntu :: Wireless Randomly Drops Connection And Refuses To Reconnect?

Mar 23, 2010

my wireless will connect to a well known connection but will sometimes drop the connection then tries to reconnect. Sometimes it will reconnect w/o a problem but most times it will fail and when it fails it will refuse to even recognize that same wireless connection.

If by a small chance it does recognize the network then when you click on it, it will ask you again for the password, which is already saved onto the computer. After entering the password it will try to reconnect, then fail.

Only solution is to reboot.

I was wondering if there was an easy temporary fix of just reloading the software that controls the wireless.Such as, my audio doesn't work when I boot. I need to reload the ALSA driver using sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload

Is there something specific to the wireless that I can force-reload and it will start working w/o having me reboot my PC?

OpenSUSE Network :: Reconnect A Pppoe Internet Connection?

I have a ppoe internet connection. I was easier and faster to configure it in Yast than in Windows XP. When
The provider here sometimes goes through some problems and the connection may disappear and return at any unexpected moment. In Windows there is a icon on system tray that dysplays such information and I know when the connection is gone. It also allows me to try to reconnect manually. Where do I find these information on Opensuse here do I manage to reconnect. In Windows it was also possible to set the connection to re-dial automatically when it was out. It was very useful if it failed in the middle of a download, the system reconnected and the download manager retried until download resumed. Is there some way to adjust opensuse to reconnect automatically when connection fails or some software that does it? Furthermore, is there a good download manager that works in Opensuse that pause, accelerates downloads and retries when connection fails?

Ubuntu Networking :: Losing (dropping) Wireless Connection After Changing MAC Addr?

Aug 8, 2011

Sorry if this has already been solved;answered anywhere else - I tried looking it up but to no avail. The problem persists & the hints I found around the forum did not provide a solution to the case, neither other net solutions i looked up I run Winblows at the lab and sometimes take my Ubuntu PC with me. There is an open Wireless network where they set MAC permission, and there's no pwd to access. It so should be fairly easy to change m MAC and access it, right! No. I run ifconfig and macchange, successfully change my MAC addr BUT the connection drops! Then if I change it back (MAC to my original address) it goes back online. And yes, I shut down the service -- "ifconfig wlan0 down" and then up..WHAT ON EARTH am I doing wrong??? No webpages touch this 'trouble-frigging-shooting instance!

General :: Get Wired And Wireless Connection At The Same Time Using NetworkManager?

Jun 15, 2011

I have a wireless connection to the internet, as well as a wired connection to a local network. When the wired connection to my local network is enabled, the wireless connection to the internet no longer works until I disconnect the ethernet cable.

(This setup used to work just fine when I was using Windows, but now doesn't seem to work. I wasn't using IP aliasing in Windows, but I am now, which may be causing the problem.)

My original connection to the internet was a wired one, at eth0, so once I got wireless enabled (on eth1), I created an IP alias to my local network of eth0:1 which is a static IP on my local network. The only configuration I did at all was to add a file named /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:1, with the following contents:

Code:

And NetworkManager just seemed to pick it up automatically - I didn't change anything else in NetworkManager or anywhere else.

(Also I use 'service NetworkManager start/stop' entirely rather than 'service network start/stop' to manage my connnections. i.e. I did 'chkconfig network off' when setting everything up initially.)

The symptom is that NetworkManager repeatedly ask for password to connect to my AP.My AP is secured with WPA-PKI. It means if I promptly configure wireless connection, i'm still able to access Internet. Same thing happens for the first boot of Fedora from hdd. For the second boot or when I dont quickly configure wireless connection when system finished booting up, NetworkManger repeatedly asks for password for AP.

I did try several approaches posted in this forum but problem still persisted. Some of approaches I tried are:

I thought I test to connect with network sharing with my Android phone. The Android phone connects according to Networkmanager, but I'm not sure if it actually works as the wired connection is still active.

I tried to figure out how to disable the wired connection, but eventually gave up and just pulled the wired network plug.

But surely, there must be a way to disable connections from Networkmanager?

OpenSUSE Network :: KDE 4.5.4 Networkmanager Crashes While Installing Mobile Connection

Dec 20, 2010

I am a long time gentoo-user (~10 years). Just bought this new laptop and don't want to take the time to compile everything. During my search for a nice binary distro, I found the KDE reloaded CD, which I then downloaded. That was because I had a great hassle to find a Distro which supports the latest KDE, I was used by gentoo. Well, I am very impressed: Installation went flawless and the Distro is very up-to-date.

Well, now to one of my problems: I have this mobile internet stick:

OpenSUSE Wireless :: How Is NetworkManager Supposed To Work?

Jul 20, 2010

I'm finding the NetworkManager applet very confusing. When I start up at a new location I can use the "Connect to Other Network..." menu item to bring up the list of available networks, and I'd expect that by selecting one of these and clicking "Connect", then configuring and clicking OK, I'd get a connection. Instead the dialog just goes away and nothing else happens. Is something broken with NetworkManager, or am I misunderstanding how this is supposed to work?

By switching back and forth between NetworkManager and ifup I'm eventually able to establish a connection to a new access point, but it's been a painful process.I've also encountered a problem reported by others, where when my system fails to suspend/resume properly the /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state has NetworkingEnabled=false and I need to manually edit this before restarting networking... but that's a separate issue, and I can work around it with the manual edit (or just add a startup script to do this automatically).

OpenSUSE Wireless :: KDE Networkmanager Not Converting WEP Passphrase

Feb 6, 2011

My friend and I spent two weeks trying to find out why my openSUSE laptop wouldn't connect to his router using WEP. We finally figured out that the KDE networkmanager was not translating the passphrase into the hexidecimal number (default key #1). Once we entered the hexidecimal number, it connected with no problems. He uses Ubuntu on his test laptop (Windows guy). Ubuntu, and kubuntu via live CD, both connected only using the passphrase. I didn't have an openSUSE Gnome live CD to test weather this is KDE specific or not.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Traditional (ifup) And Networkmanager Using KDE 11.4

using traditional never sets up the wireless connection - or should i say appears not to as no apps will connect (as they do fine using the network manager connection). using 'ifstatus wlan0', seems to suggest there is no configuration file when using the 'traditional' gui. OpenSUSE Wireless :: Use WPA2-Enterprise On KDE Plasmoid-NetworkManager

May 15, 2011

I had some difficulty getting Plasmoid to work on to connect to a WPA2-Enterprise Network. The Cert file is in DER format which is something like this "XXXX.cer" After I filed a bug report I got a respond to try the updated Plasmoid from this Repo:

Index of /repositories/KDE:/UpdatedApps/openSUSE_11.4 To use it you have to first install your certificate in openssl using terminal. First copy the certificate into the ssl directory (In OpenSUSE it is /etc/ssl/certs/)

1) sudo cp path_to_file /etc/ssl/certs/Then install it (If you don't do this it will fail) Source:http://gagravarr.org/writing/openssl...tml#Installing

2)sudo ln -s filename_of_certificate `openssl x509 -hash -noout -in filename_of_certificate`.0

3)Then after that when using Plasmoid to connect check the box use system certificate.

It should work like it worked for me but I still think certificate handling needs a lot of improvement.Pointing the cert directly from plasmoid does not work.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: NetworkManager Doesn't Configure Default Route And Nameserve

Nov 15, 2009

yesterday I installed openSUSE 11.2 on my laptop. But I'm having problem getting the wifi configured properly. During the installation I got the message "No network running" (which I also saw after the installation when using the network configuration module of YaST after switching from ifup to NetworkManager). After installation NetworkManager seemed to work fine, it detected my wifi card, found the network, and I could even connect to it. Then the problems began, no Internet connection. The first thing I tried was pinging Google which yielded an "unknown host" message. So I checked /etc/resolv.conf, to look for the DNS servers, which where missing.

I added them manually and tried again. Still no luck, so I started pinging my router, which worked, tried again pinging Google using one of there IP addresses, which failed. So I ran route to find out which routes where being used, this one gave an unexpected result, because it only showed the route to the local network (I'm not sure about the loopback one, because this was also a lot of times missing when testing):

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Reconnect 3G Connection After New IP Was Given

Sep 28, 2015

I use Debian Jessie 8.2 and I am using a 3G connection using this modem => [URL] ....

The 3G connection works fine, except after 24 hours the connection drops and I cannot reconnect. If I reboot the computer, the connection will work again.

My guess is that my ISP gives me a new IP address after 24 hours and somehow my system cannot handle it.

How can I reconnect my 3G connection without rebooting?

I have already tried the following commands:

Code: Select allsudo service network-manager restart

Code: Select alldhclient -r eth0
dhclient eth0

Code: Select allsystemctl restart ModemManager

Results of journalctl and grepping my connection name (SFR)

Code: Select allsept. 22 17:58:19 ark1 NetworkManager[512]: <info> Policy set 'SFR Web / Prepaid 1' (eth0) as default for IPv4 routing and DNS.

sept. 23 18:17:08 ark1 NetworkManager[9446]: <info> Auto-activating connection 'SFR Web / Prepaid 1'.

As you can see sept 22 at time 17:58 is when the computer started up. And roughly 24 hours after it failed to reconnect.

Also I should mention that there is a script to run the command:

Code: Select allsudo service network-manager restart

if the computer cannot ping a server, ie if the connection is lost.

Debian Configuration :: Wireless Does Not Reconnect

Oct 26, 2015

I have done a clean install of debian 8.2 (jessie) on a new PC. I am working through some of the issues that were not correctly installed. One of them is the wireless network. On startup, I have a wireless connection. At some point within the first 5-25 minutes of being logged in and doing computer stuff (there is no known action that leads to the reaction), the wireless disconnects from the network and will not reconnect. The network-manager-gnome shows three horizontal dots; the system settings> network shows all of the available networks, the strength of their signal, and the "connecting" circle spins. This behavior occurs with both WPA and insecure networks.

I have followed the guidelines for Debian>WiFi>HowToUse (https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse). Nothing appears amiss when following the Network-Manager>Gnome portion of the instructions. I was going to try the alternate WICD program, but one has to uninstall network-manager to use wicd and synaptic also wants to remove something called "gnome", too-- uninstalling a package with that name makes me uneasy. I have noticed that the installed versions of network-manager (0.9.10.0-7) and network-manager-gnome (0.9.10.0-2) don't exactly agree, but I doubt that that is significant.
