Oct 12, 2010Ubuntu insists on using movie player as the default for audio files. I would like to use VLC. VLC doesn't show up on the list as preferred applications for multimedia. I tried using custom with vlc %u but it doesn't work.

Jul 25, 2010I'm trying to figure out how to change the default settings for my printer under Firefox. I'm mainly interested in changing the default print resolution and the pages-per-side layout setting I can change the settings for all KDE applications through [URL], but I can't seem to be able to find the respective dialog for Firefox / GTK applications.
Firefox itself doesn't seem to have a dialog for the printer default settings; I've looked into about:config but all the value names are rather confusing.
My system environment:
openSUSE 11.3
KDE 4.4.4
Printer: Brother MFC-7420

Oct 11, 2010Just installed Open Suse 11.3 on my dual-boot PC ( and Ubuntu 10.10). Installation process of both OS goes well and smooth. But, unfortunately when I tried to play movies on both default applications (Banshee and Totem) in Open Suse Gnome 11.3, I've got the message to search for XVID MPEG-4 decoder. And till now, I still unable to search for it, because there's still no sound or a little sound on both players.

Jul 17, 2010I just did a fresh install of openSUSE 11.3 32bit GNOME on my notebook and everything runs fine...yet
But there is an issue with the sound playback on mp4's and quicktime (apple trailers) that I was not able to fix.
I added the Packman 11.3 repo via Yast -> Software Repositories -> Add... -> Community Repositories
Then I used zypper to get the related gstreamer-plugins ffmpeg faad vlc w32codec-all libmp4v2...
So far the media playback seem good, except the issue of "no sound with gstreamer related media players on quicktime and mp4"...
I set all available/related/installed packages to "Packman" (Yast -> Software Management), did zypper refresh + zypper up but I am simply not able to get sound from gstreamer...It works fine in VLC though!
Some google and forum research showed that it's an issue that has occurred over the recent years but I could not found a proper working solution.
If I run totem from the terminal I get the following output (plus a windows asking for permission to search for the required codec 'MPEG-4 AAC Decoder'...but it is not able to find one!):

The last Message is interesting "All missing plugins are blacklisted..." hmmm I did not blacklist any plugins...where can you see these blacklist? Is that the point, the plugin is there but blacklisted?
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Change Default To Smplayer From Totem?
Dec 6, 2010the dialog for "open with other application" is broken in that you cannot use 'remember this application for "AVI Video" files'. they always open with Totem. while totem is very capable, it lags at times and sometimes loses the stream if the lag is too long, while smplayer is not as finicky. besides, smplayer has more options that i require.i wish dearly to be able to double click an avi/mkv/etc video file and have it open in smplayer. are there instructions somewhere to do this? i have searched extensively, but there are too many threads that are similar that don't answer my question.

I have (Preferences -> Preferred Applications) in the menu and that lets me set Web Browser and Mail client. I have that set to Chromium, however any links I click open in Opera. I want these to open in Chromium, but I'm not sure how to set that.

What I'm looking for is a Win 3.x style File Association applet or config file so I can have .mp3's handled by Audacious and .m3u's handled by VLC, and so on. I'm sure it's out there somewhere, but I can't find it.
Fedora :: Cannot Change Default Applications Or File Associations
Jun 15, 2011I recently upgraded to Fedora 15 and am super-happy with it. Unfortunately, I have a minor issue that I haven't yet figured out how to fix: I can't change the default applications or the file type associations. For instance, I'd like to set Chromium as my default browser. When I first login, I tell it to set itself as default. But after I end my session and log back it, Firefox is back to being the default browser.
I have the same issues when trying to change what applications open filetypes. .rtf files have been opening in Wordpad in Wine. When I try to change it to Writer through the "Open with" dialog, it retains the change for that session but resets after I log out. I actually ended up having to uninstall Calibre because it was opening .odt files instead of LibreOffice and I couldn't change it permanently.

Jul 28, 2011lately I'm experiencing a few issues with Firefox 5.0 on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. First of all, when I try to open pdf files, I often get a black page and I've to try to reload it many times before I can effectively read the pdf (even for small-size ones).
Secondly Firefox doesn't record settings about my preferred applications. If, for example, I want a file .torrent to be opened by deluge I have to enter manually /usr/bin/deluge because by default it would be opened by gedit. No matter if I select "use as default application" the next time the issue will be present again.

Sep 22, 2010So I just switched from KDE to Gnome and after a successful install upon logout I went to the panel that allows one to choose an application (KDE, Gnome, Windowmaker etc).
Gnome worked like a dream.
"I don't remember installing any other applications," I says to myself "Why would they be listed there? I'll try booting into one of them."
At random I chose a new xWindow and hit enter... blackness.
So like any linux user I created /etc/sysconfig/desktop with DESKTOP="GNOME" and DISPLAYMANAGER="GNOME" parameters to force my hand back into Gnome.

Nov 17, 2010I tried to play a mpg file on a clean ubuntu 10.4 system which I guess laundhed totem movie player....it asked to me to download and install some packages which I accepted but unfortunately the quality of the movie isnt good (very black and red for all colors)...I want to un-install what I accepted previously and install the extended extra package found here:URl...
and hopefully that will set this as my default encoders and work better....however I dont know what I installed previously.does someone know what it was and how to un-install it?If there is another decoder anyone recommends for playing movies that would help as I am still at this point not sure the restricted-extras will fix my video.

Jul 23, 2011I am moving to Banshee on all of my 10.04 systems (anticipating the future of Ubu). Banshee has been doing something I don't understand and which seems very wrong (and which is actually causing some problems, if minor). First let me explain the arrangement. I have a server with a music share we'll call server:/tunes. On all of the machines and for all the users there is a mount (/media/tunes/) for said share.
Additionally so that all users have the same transparent experience, each user has a shortcut at ~/Music/tunes (which points to /media/tunes/). Through this I don't need to alter the default library location and all of the music on the server is automatically part of every library (and all library content and playlists have the same paths). However, Banshee has decided for some files to do one of three things:
1. It points (correctly) to only ~/Music/tunes/path/to/song.flac
2. It points (wrongly) to only /media/tunes/path/to/song/flac
3. It points to both and there is a duplicate entry
I have not knowingly given Banshee the path /media/tunes/anything.

Jun 14, 2010I've been using Thunderbird (2.0.0.24) with html attachments opening in Firefox.I just installed the new Chrome browser (5.0.375.70) and like it very much, enough so that I decided to switch from Firefox now that the Add-Ons I like are available for Chrome (Lastpass, Adblock, AutoPager). I've made Chrome the default browser in KDE's "Configure Desktop>Default Applications", but html attachments in Thunderbird still open in Firefox.I've tried most of the fixes offered on this and other forums as well as those offered by Mozilla's various help files, but nothing works. Most suggestions refer to fixes for 1.x versions of Thunderbird and no longer can be used.I just checked another OpenSUSE 11.2 PC with the newer 3.04 version of T'bird and saw no solution there either.

Jan 30, 2010I'm using OpenSUSE as a guest OS in VMware. Display settings are 1400x1050@60Hz but I want to change them for 1440x900. Using root account I go to Configure Desktop -> Display -> 1440x900. The first problem is that I can't choose 60Hz, only "Auto" or "0.0". I click Apply and the resolution changes, but if I reboot the computer or just logoff... resolution goes back to 1400x1050. My card and monitor properties: [URL]. Another strange thing is that if I click Ok on the Card and Monitor properties (changing from one resolution to another), I can choose to "Test" it, and xfine2 appears but... it ALWAYS says "1400x1050".
