CentOS 5 :: Changing Totem To VLC As Default; Saving In VLC?
May 1, 2010
am running uptodate Centos 5.4 Gnome.VLC is afterinstalled.i do have problems with Totem.some websites i visit offer streaming video.when i do start the video on those sites, a warning comes up:> Totem could not play mns://<filename>.wmva microsoft media server protocol source plugin is required to play this stream, but is not installed <when i do copy/paste the line after 'mns' to VLC media > open network VLC starts playing (which is fine in itself)as Totem refuses too to play mp4 files present on my computer (due to missing codec) (not a problem in VLC) i would like to switch to VLC Q: how can i make VLC the default player that comes up when playing videostreams?additional: how can i save a stream that VLC is playing to my own machine (for future use)?

The only player that can play it is totem (I have tried vlc and mplayer without success), yet I would prefer to save it. Is there any way to do that without a screen capture program?

I was using ubuntu 10.04 till yesterday.. and due to hdd crash i have changed my hdd.
while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.

matt@mattserver ~ % ls -l testfile
-rw-r--r-- 1 matt matt 0 2011-05-28 07:09 testfile

the dialog for "open with other application" is broken in that you cannot use 'remember this application for "AVI Video" files'. they always open with Totem. while totem is very capable, it lags at times and sometimes loses the stream if the lag is too long, while smplayer is not as finicky. besides, smplayer has more options that i require.i wish dearly to be able to double click an avi/mkv/etc video file and have it open in smplayer. are there instructions somewhere to do this? i have searched extensively, but there are too many threads that are similar that don't answer my question.

I tried to play a mpg file on a clean ubuntu 10.4 system which I guess laundhed totem movie player....it asked to me to download and install some packages which I accepted but unfortunately the quality of the movie isnt good (very black and red for all colors)...I want to un-install what I accepted previously and install the extended extra package found here:URl...
and hopefully that will set this as my default encoders and work better....however I dont know what I installed previously.does someone know what it was and how to un-install it?If there is another decoder anyone recommends for playing movies that would help as I am still at this point not sure the restricted-extras will fix my video.

I am using Xubuntu 9.10 on a nettop as a X11 terminal. In order to do that, I created a custom session script that runs some commands instead of starting xfce4-session and the likes from GDM. When I boot this nettop, GDM automatically logs a dummy user in (called "test"), and runs a script that does "xhost +", and opens a small X Terminal to keep the X session alive, while some other computer sets the DISPLAY environment variable to point to <nettop>:0 and runs gnome-session.
My trouble is that after 10 minutes of idle, the screen is blanked(power saving I presume).
I tried to add "xset -dpms" and "setterm -blank 0 -powersave off" to my startup script, in vain. I want my power saving options to be configured on the remote computer, not the nettop. How could I prevent X/GDM/Whoever from blanking the screen ?

I have fresh install (not upgrade) of Ubuntu 10.04. I have nVidia 8500GT VGA, drivers installed via System->Administration->Hardware drivers (ver. 195.36.15)Everything works fine, compiz too.But when I play the video in Totem movie player - in blinks ugly while changing volume directly via buttons on keyboard. It blinks in fullscreen and even in window. I did not have this in Ubuntu 9.10 - there it worked fine. What was changed? How to fix this? Interesting is that when I play it via mplayer - it is fine.

I have a desktop hooked up to a router and plugged into my TV. I like to run Totem and have videos running full screen on my TV. I would like to control that Totem using my laptop (connected to the same router over wifi). How would I go about doing that? I connected to my desktop using SSH and tried to send signals to Totem, but nothing worked. I tried using VNC, and that was ineffective as well.

I tried to use Totem and Rhythmbox to play an mp3 file but it fails because of a missing decoder. I have found a solution that solve the problem through a repository. Unfortunately, the PC I'm using doesn't have internet connection so I'm looking for another approach. I couldn't find any rpm that would work for CentOS 5.5 I could copy the my Linux system?

I am trying to watch a video file on a Centos 5.6 Linux. The file does not open. It says "Totem could not play 'file:///root/Desktop/LinuxCBT/Disk1/video01/video01.wmv'. A Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed." I thought maybe Totem is not capable to play this so i went ahead and installed mplayer on the system (yum install mplayer mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts. I also downloaded this all-20110131.tar.bz2 from this site [URL]. I created a folder called codecs in /usr/local/lib/codecs. I uncompressed the content of all-20110131.tar.bz2 and put them in the codecs folder. I went to folder /usr/local/lib/codecs and did chmod 755 *. I can now hear the sound but no video. when I write gmplayer -ov x11 at the terminal command prompt the mplayer opens, when I open the video file, I can hear the sound but no video. Basically my question is how can I see a video file on Linux? Have I missed something? Did I download wrong files? If I revert and try to open this with Totem, where do I get the necessary plugins for Totem?
Here is the output;
[root@localhost codecs]# gmplayer -vo x11
MPlayer SVN-r31628-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory

I'd like to know if there's a reliable way to change the default user in Debian: when I installed testing starting from Jessie, I used rsync to set up a duplicate stable installation and then upgraded it to testing, as a result I now have the same username for both installations, which is sometimes kinda confusing.
Reading around a bit, looks like you can indeed change your username with relative ease, but then there will be always something left behind somewhere still pointing at the old username: is that the case?

After finally installing Caliber E book Management, I realized it made itself the default App for my CBR and CBZ files (these are just renamed rar and zip files used for digital comics)
I tried right clicking and choosing -open with- Other Application and checked the "remember this application" after making Archive Manager the default; but when I click on a cbr and cbz file, caliber still start off.
What is the preferable way of changing the default application for a file type?

I am attempting to modify the default umask value under all accounts on my linux system to 002. This will hopefully allow both the account and the account's group access to the created files.
I have modified it within /etc/bashrc, however it seems to be making no difference on this default value. The files I create through "File Browser" all have the access rights set to 600.
Is there any error here, as all evidence I can find on the internet points to the bashrc file.

I am using Xampp on ubuntu 10.04 and I have set my document root to a folder in my home directory for ease of use with netbeans. There are several times where I have to manually go and change the permission to 755. If you just place a file in the directory it does not default to 755, seems odd since the document root folder is in my home directory. Chmod works fine but I was wondering is their a way to make all files or folders added to my document root to default to 755?

I'll be dual booting Fedora and Windows 7. I'll be doing a lot of remote work (SSH/VNC). But, I would like to be able to switch between Fedora and Windows remotely. For instance, if my home computer was currently booted up to Fedora, and I was at work using VNC, I would like to be able to tell the computer to restart, but start up to Windows so that I could do remote on Windows (and vice-versa).Is this possible? It seems like it should be, I just don't know the best way to go about it. It seems like maybe a simple program could be written, that when run would just do a quick rewrite of the config file for the bootloader.

On my newly upgraded opensuse 11.4 with GNOME,was trying to change my default mail client. I go into Preferred Applications and under email, all it lists is Evolution. I would like to change it to my Groupwise client. Googling the problem, I found that I should be able to enter a custom command there for a new entry but there is no custom option. So I googled that problem and found that it's a bug in Gnome. I found a few ideas for workarounds but I could never get any to work
