In summary, I am using openSUSE 11.2 x64 on an Acer laptop with a wireless AR928X card. I can connect to my WEP-secured network when I boot up. After some time (it might be minutes, it might be hours), I am prompted for my WEP password again. This never works, despite being the one which gets me on-line at start-up!. The only solution is a reboot. The problem is intermittent and doesn't seem to depend on my on-line activity. I have tried the following with the same result:
KNetworkManager
Traditional using IFUP
Enabling / disabling IPv6 support
I tried installing the compat-wireless package through YaST and then managed to get no internet connection at all. Went back to KNetworkManager and things "worked" again until I was prompted for the WEP code. I have openSUSE 11.2 x64 working on my office laptop without problem and can connect to my home network without any problem. My issues are with my personal laptop. I have reached the stage of booting into Windows 7 as my default option so that I can access the internet reliably. What I can do to diagnose and repair the problem - could it be that the card is going into powersave mode? If so, how do I stop that happening? I'd prefer to be on openSUSE but need to be able to rely on the internet.

I am trying to create a shell script to automate a process that takes inputs from two sets of data. The variable SHELL in my system echoes as /bin/tcsh, but I see that my /bin directory has other possibilities, such as bash. So, if changing the shell could simplify my problem, then I would go with that.
I have a list of files containing data about objects, say
obj1.dat, obj2.dat, .... objn.dat, where n is around 20 (it varies).
These objects belong to a few different categories, and there are files detailing the properties of the categories, say
cat1.prop, cat2.prop, ... catm.prop, where m is smaller than n (more than one object in each category).
I know that shell scripts can handle 2-d arrays, although I am not sure how. The thing here is that category 1 could have 5 objects and category 3 could have 7 objects. So, this could produce a 2-d array, but not a rectangular one. I need to process these files taking into acount the data about the object and the properties of the category the object belongs to. Here is what I tried to do:
# First I enter a list of category names and m lists of objects in each category
category='cat1 cat2 cat3 ... catm'
cat1-obj='obj1 obj2 obj3'
cat2-obj='obj4 obj5'
cat3-obj='obj6 obj7 obj8 obj9 obj10'
.
.
.
catm-obj='objx objy objz objn'
# The lines above show the irregular 2-d array. Then I try to trick the script into parsing through this irregular 2-d array:
for i in $category
do
data='$i -obj'
for j in $data
do
mycommand $j.dat $i.prop > $j-$i.out
done
done
The line "mycommand $j.dat ..." is just the line that processes the information. That has been tested to work fine. Feeding the information to this is what does not work. The lines " data='$i-obj' " and " for j in $data " do not have the desired effect. I have tried other ways, like data=`echo $i "-obj"` and things of the sort, by to no avail.

I've been experiencing a strange problem with Plasma locking up. Running system monitor it shows the KDE4 process using 20% CPU time, and Plasma around 10-15%. This seems way too much since on my six year old Laptop the cpu load of both processes is barely noticeable. My Laptop is an old single core 3000+ AMD Athlon 64, while my Desktop has a Quad core Xeon 2.33Ghz chip, so the fact that the KDE4/Plasma system load is many times higher than on the Laptop, indicates something is wrong.
I'm not sure what else to look for troubleshooting wise, any suggestions? *Actually, thinking about it, the KDE4 process is timing out one CPU core, which indicates to me something is really not right.

I've been fooling around with Gnome-Shell for a while now, which fits nicely on my small-screened (12") laptop, but the openSUSE 11.3 version has proven less-than-stable for me. Now I am interested in the Plasma Netbook Workspaces, which looks intriguing... The question is, [ 1 ] to install it (which I can do from Plasma Netbook Workspace - openSUSE, but the documentation is rather sparce), do I need to run MeeGo, or can I take a stock installation of openSUSE?
I don't have much luck installing openSUSE via DVD (or DVD image via USB) so I am thinking of installing via the KDE Live CD and then install the Plasma Netbook Workspace. This is basically how I installed Gnome-Shell (install from the Gnome Live CD, then install Gnome-Shell). Once it is installed, [ 2 ] how do I turn it on? Will it be an option in the login screen? I'll admit, though, I am more of a Gnome guy, but going to Gnome-Shell may be a half-step towards something like this.

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.3 last night and so far today I have had TWO Plasma crashes which leave the taskbar in a black color with stripes.
After the first one I located a post on the Web that said to do the following:
logout
Do CTRL-ALT-F1 (this does not work on my system at all, why?)
login
rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*
CTRL-D to logout
CTRL-ALT-F7
Login
I did that and it did not fix the problem. I messed around with the desktop settings and somehow got the task bar back to gray.
Now during a copy of a large number of files from one disk to another with Dolphin, it crashed AGAIN.
So far 11.3 is proving a massive disappointment compared to the 11.0 I had on up to last night. Things are more complicated and clearly not as stable as KDE 3.5.x.
And I'm switching back to Konqueror as the default file manage because Dolphin appears to be unstable at doing a simple task like copying files without freezing.
I also hate the task notifier which during a copy pops up and covers my NoScript bar in Firefox.
do I have to switch to another distro? I really don't want to do that, but so far OpenSUSE 11.3 is a massive problem.

There's just one minor glitch - everytime I log in after reboot, the plasma desktop crashes right at the beginning - a window appears saying something like "The desktop process unexpectedly quit" ( I have a polish version, don't know the exact translation ) and leaves me with a big red button in the middle of the screen ( but the system seems to be fully functional ). When I log out and log back in without rebooting everything works just fine. The error is 100% reproducible. On the other hand - if I log into runlevel 3 first and then start the X manually, then there's no error.

Since installing 11.3 I've noticed that with certain Workspace themes the plasmmoids and panel have options missing: The theme in the screenshot is "Elegance" others have the same problem; "Oxyglass", "Heron" & "Aya". The panel has the resizing sliders missing. These were working ok in 11.2.

I'm running SUSE 11.3 32-bit and have run into an issue with the KDE Plasma Desktop crashing after login. I've submitted a bug report with the KDE folks, but thought it might be OpenSuSE specific. Details from the my KDE bug report [URL].. is as follows:

I had openSuse 11.3 KDE4.4.4 installed and used the 1-Click install to get the nVidia drivers. However, this gave me the problems with Amarok and other applications crashing. I switched the system repos to use packman but that didn't help.
The solution on the forums seemed to be either recompile with an old nVidia driver or upgrade to KDE4.5 as most people were reporting to not see it under 4.5.
Upgrading seemed to be the easiest method, especially as there appeared to be a stable repo now.
I upgraded and now plasma-desktop crashes on login! Is getting the old nVidia driver my only option now?

I have been enjoying my newly installed openSuse installation for the past two weeks. I used it to run on a free computer I received so I didn't have to purchase that other operating system. It has come a long way since my last tinkering with linux/unix in college 12 years ago!I think that I noticed a problem with the calendar widget 1.0. When you change the month, the days don't update in the calendar.

I am having plasma crashes for the past few days. I'm running KDE 4.5.2 and it was all running fine. Then the latest runs of updates happened and now I can't get a desktop. KDE runs but plasma fails to start leaving me with a black screen and a mouse pointer. This happens in both failsafe and normal, with or without a fresh .kde4 folder and consistently! Here's what the KDE bug window tells me.

I'm trying out KDE4's activities, but one of the problems I keep having is the Plasma Toolboxes' (cashew) menu loses "Configure Plasma" and "Zoom Out".How do I get to "Configure Plasma" (i.e., Use a different activity on each desktop) when they are no longer on the Plasma Toolbox? How do Activities and Virtual Desktops work together? Do you use one or the other? Or, can each Virtual Desktop have multiple Activities?I'm having difficulties trying this because KDE4 seems to lose the "Configure Plasma" option.

I just updated both my KDE 3.5.10 and KDE 4.5 today (OpenSuse 1.11). The problem that I have now is that the Plasma Desktop is loaded automatically after KDE 3.5 has started. So, depending on where I click or what I do, plasma and kdesktop fight for the control of my desktop.
I searched in every corners of my KDE 3.5 --and a bit in KDE 4 since somebody forced kdm4 on me-- but I haven't found who or what starts "plasma-desktop". Definitively not me! I can kill it safely but that's very irritating.

I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 (i586) with KDE Desktop 4.6.0 "release 6" on my IBM ThinPad X40. And I have trouble with getting new plasma widgets by internet. To be more concrete, every time I try to install new widget (first I want to view details of that), so when I'm pushing on blue button called "Details", BOOM and my plasma desktop crashes and after refreshing it generates the dump file for reporting to developers.
As this is quite an annoying bug, I've decided to report it, so I've installed all the necessary debugging tools, generated the complete bug report and sent it to KDE team. After this, I've got mail with link on KDE bug tracking system [URL] and found a lot of people being in the same trouble. So, one guy - Dario Andres (I think he's from KDE team) says: "The bug and the fix are in "libattica", may be your version of that library is not the latest. (or there wasn't a release including the fix)" and though after his comment there's a dozen of other replies with the same problem, all of them are marked as the duplicated bug and has no answer.
Well, even I know that my operating system is always up to dated, anyway I've checked that library version on my computer:
giorgi@linux-oary:~> rpm -qa|grep libattica
libattica0-0.2.0-5.1.i586
And I've double checked on the Internet and this is the latest version of this library. So, it's obvious that this BUG 261530 has not solved by this library.

I installed openSUSE 11.4 today and I have a problem. After login, KDE Plasma hangs for about 30sec and I can't do anything. The keyboard and the mouse are working, but if I click, I don't get any response only after about 30sec.
This is a fresh install, 32bit, I'm using only the Oss, Non-Oss and update repositories and the system is up to date.
I have an nvidia 9500M GS graphics card, first I thought it is a driver bug, but I tried both the stable 260.19.44 and the latest 270.41.03 drivers, and was no difference.
I made an another user to try with a clean kde, but the same happened.
I have nothing in my Autostart directory, and I cleaned also the /etc/xdg/autostart dir, leaving there only the pulseaudio related files.

I played a bit with plasma widgets and every once in a while everything crashes, I see only black screen and have to restart. After restarting everything worked normal. I found some tutorials for opensuse, and started with some basic shortcuts, such as showing active windows and activities. Then I had black screen again (which I've come accustomed to) and restarted pc expecting everything will be just fine like it was after previous reboots.
But then I saw that all activities are identical and everything I worked on has been deleted. I found in activities window that I have 20 or more activities and I didn't know where they had come from. I am stuck and I didn't see any activity that will restore my desktops to original state, and in my searching through activities I also had a lot of black screens. I use opensuse 11.4 x64 and kde 4.6.

After updating some of my packages to the newer versions, I restarted my computer so that I could experience the full effect of the update. When I attempted to login, Plasma Workspace crashes and nothing loads. I am forced to use another window manager to login into the system, and when I investigated into this problem by typing plasma-desktop in the command terminal, I receive this error:
Code:
plasma-desktop(18223) getComponent: Failed to connect to the kglobalaccel daemon QDBusError("org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner", "Could not get owner of name 'org.kde.kglobalaccel': no such name")
