Oct 16, 2010

Today I have installed Linux SUSE 11.2 . At installation, I was asked for user-name and password. I edit this correctly.

At the end of the installation, the system reboots until the mask 'user name' and 'password' will be displayed. When I edit my user-name and the password the system said, that the login is not correct.

First, I think, I have forgetten my password an do a new installation of Linus SUSE 11.2 . Whatever, the same problem ist still there.

Ubuntu :: Retrieve User Dn Value In Openldap?

Aug 24, 2010

We are in the process of integrating openldap into our application and existing AD used is MSAD. We would like to access the users created in openldap in our application(Java code) and then autheticate them against the details in AD(openldap). We are using Spring LDAP connection for fetching openldap connections. We have the following code with MSAD:

Code:

userAttributes.get("distinguishedName").toString()

this works because MSAD user objectclass has an attribute 'distinguishedName' to get the user DN. There is no such provision in openldap or is there anyother way to retrieve the DN in openldap ?

Server :: Openldap 2.3.43 Directory Read Only User?

Mar 8, 2011

I have no ACLs in place yet but want to use a user called ldap-auth-user to bind to the ldap servers directory from the client servers. However I keep on getting ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49). Error. I know the UserPassword is correct because I can log into a server using that id and password through the LDAP directory. I am guessing it has something to do with the way I created the account.

This Works:

ldapsearch -D 'cn=Manager,dc=test,dc=com' -x 'uid=testuser' -W

This Doesn't:

ldapsearch -D 'cn=ldap-auth-user,dc=test,dc=com' -x 'uid=testuser' -W

Here is the ldap-auth-users entry in the directory

[root@ldap-build-01 ~]# ldapsearch -D 'cn=Manager,dc=test,dc=com' -x 'uid=ldap-auth-user' -W
Enter LDAP Password:
# extended LDIF

OpenSUSE Install :: Changing Password User That Is Not Logged In?

Apr 15, 2010

I'm looking for a user-friendly way to change the password of a user that is *not* currently logged into the machine. We have a machine that is used by a number of users with a low level of tech savvy. The machine gets logged in as a generic user which works for most purposes, but due to a management requirement, we need Firefox to be run under an account set up for the individual user. I've gotten that bit to work fine, but what I can't figure out is a friendly (GUI) way to allow users to change their own password while the machine is logged in as the generic user. I would like to use gnome-passwd, but I've been unable to figure out how to get it to run for a user other than the logged-in generic user.

OpenSUSE :: Require A User To Enter Password To Open Terminal?

Sep 21, 2010

I'm in the process of configuring a "guest" account for houseguests tose my computer. I've got the file permissions set, but I'd also like to restrict their access to the terminal. It seems to me that most of the damage that can be done to a computer goes through the terminal.I downloaded Pessulus (I use Gnome)but it doesn't require a password. the profiled user can just open Pessulus and alter their profile -- what's the point? Is there a way I can require a user to enter a password, either for any terminal or Pessulus?I like Pessulus -- it's concise and easy to use. But it doesn't seem very secure as I understand it.

OpenSUSE Install :: When Clicking My User Name To Login - The Password Box Would Not Display

Jun 4, 2010

I am not sure if anyone here has any experience with Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Linux but my problem relates to that product.

I am running 11.2 openSUSE and after installing the latest version of the Kaspersky product in question, I went ahead and restarted the machine. At the logon screen, when clicking my user name to log in, the password box would not display.

I tried clicking on the other option and trying it that way and after putting my name in the username box, the machine just started thinking and thinking and nothing happens.

I also tried logging in through terminal service but it would not recognize my password to be correct.

I really need to log into my username since I have important files on that Linux partition. I tried mounting this partition in Windows since I have a dual boot setup but I can only view the folders of the partition and not the contents.

OpenSUSE :: File Manager View Properties (in Details Columns)

I am newbie in openSUSE as still in transition from windows OS. How to display file properties (details other than size, date, permissions, owner, group, type) using file manager applications similar to Dolphin, Konquerer, etc. I have heaps of files ported from windows environment where I used to store descriptive subjects in one of the file properties field. In windows environment, I would have used file manager such as explorer to display the selected file properties field when searching for particular file before opening it. I know openoffice supports the file properties feature but unfortunately it would appear Linux OS currently does not have a file manager application ready to display these information.

Red Hat :: Cannot Change Root Password (let Alone Standard User's Password)?

Jan 6, 2009

At the RHEL prompt, I entered the standard user's username/password combo. Linux displays a message box stating:"Your account has expired; please contact your system administrator."Next, I entered "root" in the username field and entered the root password (which expired also--keep in mind that passwords are set to expire after x days). Linux displays a message box stating:"You are required to change your password immediately (password aged)."When prompted to "Enter current UNIX password", I entered the new password (was that the right thing to do?); Linux displays a message box stating:"The change of the authentication token failed. Please try again later or contact the system administrator."I rebooted the system and got into command line mode; somehow I logged in as "root" (don't know exactly how, but needed to change the password there). At the "#" prompt, I type "passwd root"; Linux displays the message "Changing password for user root", followed by the message "passwd: Authentication information cannot be recovered.

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 - How To Enable TLS / SSL On OpenLDAP

Jul 6, 2010

Every time I try to setup TLS in openldap using the yast applet. The database blows up and dies. I cannot restart the ldap service unless I create a new database. Basically I get LDAP up and working perfectly. Then I use yast to go and enable TLS and SSL support. I put in the paths of the certs. Then hit okay and that is when it blows up. I cannot restart the service. I follow the directions exactly in the link below.
OpenLDAP Faq-O-Matic: How do I use TLS/SSL?
Where is says "using certificates".

Here is what it says in the /var/log/messages
Code:
Jul 6 16:45:31 leia slapd[23996]: @(#) $OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.17 (Oct 24 2009 04:51:18) $#012#011abuild@build32:/usr/src/packages/BUILD/openldap-2.4.17/servers/slapd

OpenSUSE Install :: Pass Through Login Details To Mount Encrypted Volumes

Jul 17, 2010

I'm looking for a way of mounting an encrypted volume - home folder or a separate mount point, using only the standard login authentication (ie KDM or ssh). I thought the pam_mount module provided this, but I still get prompted for a password on the console at boot time. This is inconvenient as both my main desktops are headless HTPCs. I want the login credentials to be passed through, at log in time. I'm guessing this is possible, but to be honest, encryption is one thing in Linux that still completely confuses me.
