I'm running openSUSE 11.1, KDE 3.5.10. I used to get system sounds (like startup etc) and I could get sounds from Amarok when I played .mp3 files.
However, yesterday my Amarok crashed and I could not get any sound from Amarok (I was using gstreamer/auaup engine, didn't have any other engine). But I could still hear the system sounds like shutdown, startup etc.
So I was playing around with KMix and alsamixer settings. I don't have root access on the computer so I can't change any configuration files or anything. Just changed the volume controls etc. But now I can't get any system sounds.
I ran speaker-test and no sound there either. All my mixer volume controls are on max but I can't remember exactly what I changed on KMix. I'm thinking I messed up the switches some how.
I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop. When I plug my headphones, they sometimes work, they sometimes don't, but that's not the main problem. When they do work, sound also plays out of the speakers. The only solutions I was able to find were for earlier versions, which don't work for 11.04.
My Toshiba Satellite Pro A200 running Fedora 8 continues to play sound out of the laptop speakers when external speakers are plugged in (and no sound out of the external). What can I do to diagnose/fix this? code...
I have had sound working for months but recently I plugged in a USB headset and to get it to work, I had to open pulse audio and change to it. I later unplugged it, turned off the computer and have now restarted it (without the headset) and now I get no sound through the computer speakers! I used the Pulse Audio manager that shows up in the taskbar when you select it from the Kickoff Launcher. But now it's showing "Null Audio" and under "Sound" it shows "Audio Devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG" Under System Settings -> Multimedia, it lists Pulse Audio Sound Server.Under PulseAudio Manager ->Devices tab it has Null Output as the only device.
I hear noisy sound coming out from my speakers. That noise stays whether I play music or not. The noise doesn't exists in Windows 7. (I have dual-boot configuration)

BTW, I can't find the Sound module in the Hardware section in YaST, as written here.
I would like to ask you the following: Is it possible when I plug in my usb speakers to have the sound redirected directly to them (as it happens also in windows?)
I have some USb external speakers that work fine with Linux. I have configured them with priority 1 and I also have configured my soundcard with priority 2.
So when the speakers are plugged in in advance (Before os boots) I can only listen music through my usb speakers.
When my usb speakers are unplugged and system reboots afterwards I could only listen music from the internal speakers (soundcard).
But things dont work dynamically if I just plug my usb speakers while music is playing the sound is not getting redirected. So I have to restart alsasound which is a little bit annoying.
I am a complete newbie who recently installed openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit). My desktop is KDE. Motherboard is MSI X58 Eclipse. Audio card (came with MB) is Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme H/W.
As the title of my message indicates, there's no sound coming out from the speakers. I know that both speakers and sound card work fine because I just tested them under Windows XP.
I launched YaST, chose the Sound icon, clicked on Add, selected Creative Labs. The sound card model that comes close to the one I have should be X-Fi. So I chose that, selected Quick Automatic Setup and I get the following error message: An error occurred during the installation of X-Fi. The kernel module snd-ctxfi for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
I then went to Open Source - SoundCard Support (Creative Labs' Open Source - SoundCard Support) but I did not download any drivers because of the following warnings: * THIS IS AN UNSUPPORTED BETA DRIVER. There is no technical support for this driver. * This beta driver has only been tested on the following 32-bit / 64-bit Linux distributions: Ubuntu 7.10, openSUSE 10.3 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1 (64-bit only). * We recommend that only experienced users install this driver. Do not install this driver on a system used to perform critical tasks.
I get sound from my speakers but not from my headphones. When headphones are plugged in the speakers are muted. In the mixer, all sliders are at 100%. Headphones were tested and worked on another system. Here is some information about my system.
I am using opensuse 11.2 KDE. I hear sound only in headphones but not in speakers of laptop COMPAQ presario 2700. /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf looks like this:options snd slots=snd-intel8x0# W60f.Zmi7iE4Vbq5:82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controlleralias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
I am using the acer aspire 7736ZG and I have a weird problem. Everytime I connect some external headspeakers (headset?) on my laptop the built in speakers are not muted. My laptop is a dual boot and this problem does not exist on Windows 7, which probably means that this is not some strange hardware problem. there speakers are plugged into a black "hole" as there is not green one available.
Actually there are 3 colored "holes" for the jacks to be plugged in. A blue one (do not have a clue what might be plugged in there). A pink one which is for microphone and a black one which works fine in Windows 7 when i plug in my headset. So what I should try to check to fix this weird problem?
Installed 11.3 with KDE, actually it is working good with 512MB RAM. But there is not loud, but annoying noise, coming from speakers, some electronic noise. No such sound in XP. code...
I have an old Acer Travel Mate 290 with OpenSuSE 11.3 (LXDE) 30G and 240Mb RAM. I don't have sound in the internal speakers, I only have sound through the headphones. Here you will find the information of alsa-info.sh [URL]

when I plug headphones into my computer, sound comes out through both the headphones and the computer's speakers. Is there a way to disable the speakers when headphone are plugged in, or even disable them altogether?
I recently built a new computer, and my sound works fine, but the speakers don't mute when I plug my headphones in. The headphones work, other than there is also sound coming from the speakers.
Right now I either can have wireless or sound. When I get sound I lose my wireless which may be due to some kernel issue. I use the madwifi, madwifi-kmp-default, madwifi-kmp-pae, & compat-wireless-kmp-pae for my athero ar 9285. This gets my wireless going.
I followed SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE and couldn't get sound
Then I followed Alsa-update-snapshot - openSUSE
I get sound but lose my wireless. I reinstall madwifi-kmp-pae, & compat-wireless-kmp-pae. I have to downgrade some kernel conflicts and I have wireless, but no sound. My sound information is here [URL].
I might have a different problems as I have a newer laptop, a HP dv6-2170us with intel i5 cpu. I had no wireless with the 2.6.31 kernel so I upgraded to the 2.6.34 and had to manually compile my wireless driver. Everything works great now except the sound issue. I thought it use to work out the box with the old kernel, but then again I might be wrong. I knwo it works in the "other os" dual booting and all. Its a not a huge issue, but hopeing I could resolve it. Here is some of the info from reading some of the other posts. the model=dell-vostro I just tried to see if that works, which is doesnt, so thats why thats in my sound.conf file.

Have I missed anything? I have tried the fix here: Audio coming from both headphone and laptop speakers - Page 3 - openSUSE Forums page 3 about adding a repo and upgrading, but that upgrade wants me to revert back to the older kernel in which case I dont have wireless support or acpi working proporly, so thats not a doable thing for me.
After trying at least a dozen distros, I'm a happy OpenSuse user now and hoping to stick to it for some time now. I am running it on HP DC7800 workstation and the performance is superb. One problem I have is that my sound is not working. If I plug-in the headphone to the front jack, I sear sound just fine but nothing from internal speakers. Here are some details:
I have an issue where my laptop speakers work just fine, but when I plug in headphones, I get no noise. I'm using openSUSE 11.4.I found others with the same issue, but this guy's solution looks like he might be using some different version and his solution doesn't work (can't find the file he edited).
I have Hp Pavillion dv4-1235ee Notebook PC with windows vista.there is no sound coming from internal speakers, 3d sound blaster pro compatible sound 16 bit integrated.
I don't know what I did but I lost all audio. I'm running F15 with gnome 3. By opening system settings and then sound I don't find anything muted. Under hardware I have 3 devices, the first is RS880 Audio Device (Radeon HD 4200) this one has no sound at all when I click test speakers. Then I have quickcam comm STX and then I have Internal Audio which works by clicking on test speakers.. I have no clue of where to start to fix this but reinstall everything again.
This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.
is there any way i can make my sound card go 5.1 and enable a "fill speakers" option? I have an onboard via hd 1705 sound codec as it's listed in my mainboard manual. The sound card it's self appears in the system as aa nvidia hda, and so it's listed in the manual. So my question is, shouldn't it be a via since it has a via hd chip? Anyway, apparently my kmix volume control has very vew options for it. I also have a via tremor pci sound card, but it's not hd. That one has all the options available in the kmix, but the via hd doesn't. I'd prefer using the via hd since it's "high definition". Is there any way i can enable the 5.1 on it?
I have an Ubuntu 10.10 OS in a VMware player in which I am unable to get any sound at all. The host windows os plays sound so it can't be the sound card.
The default player is rythymbox and I also have VLC media player installed. Neither will produce any sound. When I press the "test speakers" button on the sound preferences hardware tab, there is no sound.
Installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP laptop. I have installed Ubuntu on 2 of my computers with no problems whatsoever, but this laptop is just a problem. I already had to install the driver for my wireless card, and now I noticed there are no sounds coming from the speakers, but if I plug headphones into the headphone jack, there is sound.
Sound works through headphones but not through speakers. After trying for hours googling and different snd-hda-intel options in the /etc/modprobe. d/ alsa-base.conf file with no success I decided to reload deb. There is probably some snd-hda-intel option I havent tried yet to get what I need on this machine, or perhaps I'm just missing something all together. As stated sound works through headphone jack. I've gone into the system settings and there is no "speaker" or similar output device to select. I found many people report with the C210 that using Code: Select alloptions snd-hda-intel model=generic worked for them, but has not worked for me.
Current alsa-base.conf file reads (after format/reload)

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and while everything is working great except the sound. I have an ASUS P5lp-le motherboard that has onboard 5.1 audio, but my speakers are really quiet. I have tried running "alsamixer" in the terminal and everything was turned up all the way. Is there thing else I could try?
