View 3 RepliesI've tried to get an opensuse box I have to share a directory via NFS. I've failed each time, but I thought that the third time, I'd enlist some help from the forums, if I could. how do I know that the nfs server and not the client is the problem? Short answer is: I don't! That's why nfs (and many netwrk problems) are laborious, you're troubleshooting needs to take place at both source and desitination. Next question, what do I have set up so far? Well, I did download the nfs server kernel stuff (two months back) and /etc/init.d/nfsserver start seems to get set up OK. No errors and the daemons nfsd, idmapd, mountd area all running. So, I *think* that part is OK. I have the share set up properly in /etc/exportfs and have "exportfs -r" it.
OK, now onto the trickier stuff: the client and iptables. On the client pinging to the nfserver box is perfect, and I have rpcbind running. the reported error is "mount.nfs: mount system call failed" though from experience nfs errors don't mean a whole lot.However, I will go off and check now and see if I need a mountd running on client-side too.Then there's iptables .... ouch, that could be a long and painful trek. I don't see any specific ports being blocked, and it's the iptables that the default v11.2 opensuse came with. I did turn them off and the problem was the same, so whether wishfl thinking or not, I'm hoping it's not an iptables issue.
I have Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed on my new laptop and I'm trying to get my backup script up and running again. I had a script that would connect using smbmount with my normal user account and then mirror my home folder to the external network attached hard drive with rsync. It seems that rsync needs to be run as user account, not root, to work properly.Some of the setup info for getting this running in Kubuntu Karmic was from this article:
However, smbmnt does not exist in *buntu 10.04. Is there any other way to connect NAS drives as non-root user that is relatively secure? I spent all day yesterday struggling with this and still haven't found a solution.
I'm trying to figure out how to perform a minimal install to a USB attached hard drive. A full install works just fine, when I start the install from the LiveCD desktop, all the USB drives are visible and can be installed to. In the minimal install, the requisite kernel modules for USB storage don't seem to be loaded, therefore, my USB hard drive is not visible and cannot be mounted, partitioned, or installed to.
The reason behind this is I'm trying to build an XBMC install on a USB hard drive and want only the minimum backend OS that's necessary as some of the Ubuntu desktop software causes issues with some of the XBMC software. I've posted on the XBMC boards about this, but my questions have gone completely unanswered,
I have a computer, the one I am on now, with Ubuntu 10.10, it should be completely updated... and I can network with other computers, I can access Windows XP and 7 shared locations on other computers, and I can also get Ubuntu on other computers to access this computer's shared files.What I can't do, however, is share my hardrives that are on this computer, I have tried sharing them in /media/ and etc, but it is not working, apparently you have to mount them in some mystical way.
Another problem is getting Windows machines to access Ubuntu computers on the network - which I believe is a Windows problem, so I can figure that out some other time, but importantly, I want to be able to share my hardrives over the network.
If someone can give me some instructions to mounting and sharing hardrives(internal), and even my DVD-Drives, and portable USB devices, would also be fantastic - since, in Windows you can just right click, "share", and it's done.. It is a very useful thing to have, and I don't want to use Windows on this computer anymore, but I have no choice, really, if I can't share my storage to the other computers.
On Linux Mint (Gnome) i used to go to Network drive. that is on the right hand side of Nautilus there is a short cut for Network. in there i could see my network hard drive and other laptops connected to the network, and i could access my files. but on OpenSuse, when i open the network folder, nothing comes up. may be it needs some sort of configuration.

ok now install Wine ubuntu software thingy tip wine don't do the beta right now im stuck on installing starcraft and mounting the other hard drives will get back to you and make a better guide on this.oh by the way if your Internet isn't connecting automatically you might need to set your IPV4 setting manually this is because you have set your router with DHCP disabled. To mount the drive ro (read only):Make a mount point.mount First open a terminal.Then type these commands (assuming the partition is /dev/hdb1):

Note: if the partition is not /dev/hdb1 you will need to adjuxt accordingly.To make the mount automatic at boot you need to edit fstab:

I bought a "WD My Passport Essential 320 GB" usb drive. When I plug it in (suse 11.2 x86_64 gnome version), it won't automount, a message appears ".../dev/sr2 is not a valid block device", I can not mount it manually neither Don't have a clue how to proceed in solving this issue. The drive is a bit strange though, it has some software on it for protecting data, which I wont need, but can't get rid of it neither. However when I connected it to my laptop running ubuntu 9.10 x86_64, the drive automounted ok, so I guess I must be missing some additional software on my suse. The drive was initially NTFS formated, but I did reformat it to FAT with ubuntu.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've used YAST to include a USB hard disk in the export list and mount it to remote machine with NFS. That worked first time the disk was mounted. On the next reboot I saw that the USB disk was mounted again in "/media" but in new folder and its previous folder existed but empty and was mounted with nfs. It seems that first nfs comes mounted in booting time and then USB gets mounted after logging as a user. USB hard disk finds its folder occupied and automatically creates new folder in "/media". What should be done in order to USB hard disk and nfs to be mounted in the same point automatically on the boot ? The second question : When I mount an external disk to be accessible remotely with nfs I get refused to unmount the disk as a USB device. Is it possible to be unmounted as a USB disk done without unmounting it as a nfs as well?

1. it was installed on Thinkpad W500, and its sleep mode doesn't work, the computer cannot wake up from sleep mode.
2. After a hard reset due to stuck at sleep mode, the KDE network manager couldn't find any network interface anymore, even I tired to disable and enable "user Controlled with NetworkManager in Network Settings, still same problem. it always say "network management disabled" regardless the network manager checkbox status in Network Settings. On the other hand, Traditional Method with ifup can detect the my wireless and ethernet ports and work under ifup method.
so does anyone has idea about
1. how to configure the sleep mode for laptop?
2. how to bring back the network manager again? (I have "user controlled with network manager" checked in network settings.

Anyone know how to remotely boot a server so that a network boot (F12) automatically starts? For example, in Solaris, I can type "reboot -- net -s" (hope i remembered the syntax - been a while! )to reboot my server and begin a network installation without having to be at the console. I am looking for the same in SLES.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Opensuse 11.2 and am using a couple of USB hard drives to store large data. One of these drives is formatted with FAT32 and one with NTFS. When I plug-in a USB device KDE4 shows me a little pop-up asking what I want to do with it, I select to open it in Dolphin which of course automatically mounts it.
My question is what if I want to change some of the mount options - is this possible without reverting to manual mounting? And second question is what system does it use to automount - Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu are all deprecating HAL in favour of pure udev, is this the case in Opensuse too?

Just installed opensuse 11.3 Kdeversion on my laptop. Before installing it on live mode i had a problem of accessing my other drives (NTFS, FAT32 and EXT4) which said HAL system policy...etc mounting error. I could access all drives with root privilege. I thought problem will be solver once i install opensuse on my system. How ever i was really disappointed after seeing the same problem post install. Googled around for the solution and got this link

Checked the contents of mnt directory as well as the media directory but they do not contain anything. I would like to know how to view the contents of the cd once it is inserted. Also i would like to know how to erase the contents of a rewritable dvd once it is inserted into the tray. Is it build into the OS that we can erase the contents of the cd once it is inserted. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to mount my NAS device via NFS with suse 11.1, but up to now it failed. The NAS does support NFS, but it requires a UID and a user name and up to now I could not figure out the correct nfs mount options for that.
If I just make mount 192.168.0.2:/nas1 /mnt a get the error message "mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.0.2:/nas1". So can somebody please tell me the correct options for user name and user id which the mount should use. And, preferable the correct entry for the etc/fstab file to make this mount being executed automatically during startup. I studied the mount(8) and nfs manpages several times, but I do still have no idea how to make it.
I am running OpenSuSE 11.3. I cannot mount an export from a Redhat 9 NFS server.I am able to mount the export from RHEL5, Ubuntu, Fedora, Solaris but not OpenSuSE 11.3. This is the command I use from a Ubuntu Karmic box.

As I said it works from many other distros, but not sure why no go on this one. Can anyone explain this? Should I submit a bug? I noticed portmap is not used anymore and am wondering if thatmay have anything to do with it. The rpcbind is supposed to handle this from what I read..not sure if this is accurate.
I've just upgraded to 11.3 (64 bit) and the nfs client does not quite work. I have 3 mounts I try to make, and 2 out of 3 work. The third seems to mount, but shows an empty directory. There are no errors in /var/log/messages on the 11.3 client or the server. The only difference between the 3 mounts that I can see is that the failing mount is of an xfs system. The other two happen to be ext3. Is that visible to the nfs client? Or is that a red herring? I can still mount all 3 just fine from my other opensuse 11.2 systems.

I just setup an old computer with Suse 11.3. My goal is to store all my movies and stuff on the Suse box and access them through my home network. I have 11.3 installed, got the network setup and working, can access the internet, access files to/from my laptop to Suse box, and can even access movies/files on the Suse box from my WD Live media box. The problem is: when I add an external drive to the Suse box my WD Live does not totally 'see' it. he external USB drive is accessable on the Suse box as I've moved files to and from this external USB drive. The drive is a WD MyBook. I setup sharing in Samba and the WD Live sees the drive but cannot see the files. Is this a permission thing? Pretty sure I setup Samba correctly as I share several directories in the Suse box.
View 3 Replies View Relatedbeen searching google and forums for about 5 hours now, and can't figure this one out, I have a server running opensuse 11.2 sharing various NFS directories, I have one laptop that is running 11.2 and I have no problem getting my NFS shares from the server.On my other laptop that is running 11.3, I had the shares working at one point, but changed things around and added a new HD to the server, now I can NOT get this thing to work, I have tried everything I could find to read on it. Started and stopped the NFS server and exportfs -a, and checked /var/logs/messages on server and nothing about this laptop (192.168.0.102 suse 11.3) trying to connect.On this laptop, I have deleted all the shares, and tried to re-add them but still get this error everytime.on server /etc/export:

I use a RAIDON unit (SL3610/3620-2S-LB2 - set up with RAID1 and NFS) as a file server and want it to mount at boot. My /etc/fstab entry is
10.10.10.2:/mnt/md1/ulimnt /home/uli/ulimnt nfs rw,hard,intr 0 0
But the system does not mount at boot. SO after the system booted up the command (as root) mount -t nfs 10.10.10.2:/mnt/md1/ulimnt /home/uli/ulimnt mounts the system without problems Of course I can add a login script - but why does it not work at boot System is opensuse 11.0 - network with if up

GRUMPY is the name of my NAS by the way! It mounts properly, BUT i cannot delete or rename files, so basically the user "matt" has read only privileges, and root has ownership of the mount. How do I go about mounting these so that user "matt" has RW privileges?
When I log on as root user and mount them, I can read and write as required, so this has led me to believe that my problem lies in my permissions for matt when mounting them... I posted on the netgear forum and was asked to try and mount using the following command:
