I have installed opensuse 11.2 without graphical interface. Configured whole server with ftp and hosting. This suses-server is in LAN with my home computer and without keyboard, monitor and mouse. What to use to connect from my Windows platform to terminal of suse so I don't need extra hardware?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am currently running Windows Xp with service pack 3 and OpenSuse 11.0 (i586) on the same machine on separate hard drives. here are the specs on the machine. (Note: it is only a single core machine. I have no idea why both Suse and Windows say it is dual core as the processor was bought and installed months before dual cores went on the market.)

Now on to my problem. About a year ago I had to wipe my Windows drive and backed up about 32 GB of stuff from it to my OpenSuse drive. I did this from the Suse OS using Dolphin. In fact I can see, open, change, delete, modify layout, and move stuff around on the Windows drive all day long from Suse. I can as I said pull stuff over to the Suse drive from Windows drive while in Suse and save to Suse drive. Now I have need of the stuff that was moved but Windows does not see the Suse drive for what it is. Just says 'unknown partion type' gives size in GB and ignores it otherwise. From Suse if I try to move stuff back to the Windows drive it starts to transfer then stops and tells me it does not have permission to access the destination drive, folder, or location depending on how I tried to save it to the Windows drive. Adding new hard drives to the system does not help and the external 1 TB drive we have Suse can see it but will not do anything with it. The thumb drives on the other hand Suse does not have a problem with. It will open, read, and write to them all day long. Suse will not access the network to dump files to the network file server and it does not see any other systems on the network not even the ones running the same OS. I want to do the following:
1. Move the Windows files from the Suse drive to the Windows drive in same machine or to the network file server (also a windows machine)
2. Move all the Suse files to another machine running same Suse OS.
3. Wipe the Suse drive in this Machine so that Windows can use it.
I have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!
I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).
My questions:-
1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0)
2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?
I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay �� for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.
At home I am using a Windows Server 2003 as Domain controller with Active Directory. My "client" computers are all currently running Windows XP. They all require CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and the user to enter their credentials before they will allow logon. Shared files reside on various other Server 2003 machines and have restrictions on so only specific users can access certain resources.
For example, I have the family finances and other important documents in a share named 'Private-Files', only members of the 'PrivateFiles' global group have access. Likewise, I have my movies sorted into their appropriate age categories - after all, I don't want my 5 year old son accidentally watching Aliens! So this all works but as you can imagine, the copies of Windows XP and Server 2003 are far from legitimate. I want to go legal and the only real way I can afford to do this is to switch over to Linux.
I have used Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora and a few other distros in the past and found that for ease of use, I want to use Ubuntu on the desktop computers but power the servers with Open Suse. The problem is, although I can install the OSes, I have no idea where to proceed from there - for example, how do I create a Domain in Suse? Where and how do I create domain users and groups? How do I set permissions on shares for the domain users?
I upgraded to opensuse 11.3. I try to connect to my opensuse 11.3 desktop with my Windows 7 notebook, but I keep getting a wrong password error, I have re-entered the password many times, even tried different passwords on my opensuse desktop. I keep getting a wrong password error. I have tried tightvnc and realvnc both on my Windows 7 notebook, and still can't get it past the login screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed 11.2 a couple weeks ago on a machine at work, and thru YaST connected to the domain. I was then able to add a printer, and thru nautilis browse to windows computers with shares. Something changed about a week ago and I've played with everything I can think of, read lots of tutorials, and still can't make it work. I'm about ready to format and reinstall from scratch and try again, as I'm out of ideas.
So the way it was before, in nautilus if I clicked on network it would give me a list of all sorts of computers on my domain, and if I clicked on one of the windows machines it would ask me my username/password, and after I entered them, I'd be in.
Now, in nautlis if I click on network it shows me "windows network" and if I click on that it gives me a list of all sorts of workgroups and domains (or something like that). If I click on the one with my domain name, it asks username/password but it doesnt work.
I've tried leaving the domain and rejoining, I've enabled and disabled kerberos, ldap, samba, everything I can think of - although I dont think I had to change those at all from default the first time.
I dont know what I could have done between when it worked and now. I did allow some installation of updates. Shortly thereafter I noticed ssh no longer worked, and after playing with it forever I couldnt make it work, I uninstalled openssh and then reinstalled it from the repository, and it worked again. No idea why it stopped working, but maybe it's related to this domain problem, I dunno.
My main goal at this time is to be able to access windows shares from the linux machine. I don't care if I have to login to linux with my windows domain account or a local account (although all the documentation I've followed said that I should be able to login with a domain username/password too).
I have x11 forwarding enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a suse 11.2 32 bit box running kde I can open x apps on a windows machine using xming and putty just fine, but when I boot the same machine into suse 11.2 64 bit using kde and try using konsole I get: cannot connect to x server
The command I'm using to log in is: ssh -X -l username host I doubt the problem is with the server I'm logging into or it wouldn't work in windows, not really sure what to look for as I've never had a problem using x11 forwarding from a linux client before only windows ones
I was wondering if there is any way to enable an MS Windows client that is otherwise unable of joining a domain to join a domain controlled by (open)SUSE? Is that inability only for joining a Windows based domain but a client that runs XP Home Edition or similar domain- incapable version of Windows could join a domain if it was controlled by Linux?Pardon my newbie style, but answer doesn't have to be detailed step-by-step, just yes/no answer with some pointers would do. Have TightVNC 1.3.10.0 installed on WXP. Can connect to Ubuntu 9.10 system running natively on its own system without problem. Have OpenSuSE 11.2 running in a VMWare Server VM on a W2K3 server on yet another system. SuSE VM is web-aware, I can get out to the web and regularly receive SuSe updates. SuSE VM has its own IP address which it got from DHCP. I can ping the SuSE VM in the W2K3 server from my WXP machine. W2K3 firewall is disabled.When I point TightVNC at the SuSE VM, it says it can't connect. When I open a browser page to the SuSE VM at port 5801, I connect, and can log in and work as usual. When I click on the options tab at the top of the screen, a window opens titled "TightVNC Options".

I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. When I look in the network I can see the computer running suse, but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to mount drive: connection refused by server.'

When the "checking your system comes, I get, in red, the following message: "unsupported combination of hardware platform X86_64 and bootloader grub. I ignored it and continue with the installation. It goes till the end and when it has to restart into new OS, there was nothing, only black screen and no keyboard. So I have to reinstall into suse 11.1. What is this and how to proceed? And yes, when I checked the DVD, it says the system on it is suse 11.3-1.21.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

When I switch to static IP, I can no longer ping internal network, or anything else. This works OK with SUSE 11.2 on same hardware and (as far as I can see) same setup. Some diagnostics are shown below.

Disabling the firewall makes no difference.
Not using a network manager (can't see how to assign fixed address if I do - all greyed out).

I am attempting to setup a linux file server in active directory. It has been kind of an ongoing project(nightmare) for me... I have tried a few distributions of linux and I have to say I really enjoy openSUSE. YaST is my best friend. Now to the problem at hand.
I have samba installed and configured for the domain. I was able to successfully join the machine to the domain. I can even log on using domain user names and passwords (more than I was able to accomplish with other distros...). Where I am having a problem currently is I cannot see the suse machine from a windows machine. I can access shares from suse to windows though.
Im trying to connect to my wireless network via terminal. My wifi network has a WPA2 encription. Im running ubuntu server 10.04. wifi interfaces are active, i can "see" my network with airodump. The only thing is i dont really know how to configure my iwconfig to connect to it.
