Jan 25, 2011I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible.My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet.The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).

Nov 29, 2010Is there anything like a persistent caching proxy available in linux for me to configure, ie not public? (persistent meaning the cache remains in hard disk between reboots) Is it possible that it NEVER looks for any update to a page that is available in the cache?

I have a WEB/MAIL server configured to work on a static IP address, lets say 200.11.22.33.
Now I wanna point a domain to that server to get the services up and running, lets say mydom.com ...
The static IP Address is assigned by my Internet Provider.
I'm lost in the part of connecting the domain with the server.
I have the domain DNS pointing to the ISP name servers, but I don't remember if this is the correct way, or if I have to setup my own DNS server.

Jun 29, 2011I'm running into a little trouble trying to configure bind as a caching dns server on centos 5.6. for debugging purposes I've got iptables and selinux turned off, but I can't get see the dns service on my local network. on my server itself I can run nmap against it and see that port 53 is open, but if I try it from another computer on my network the port is closed.

The problem is using Yast2 I don't have the option of using the proxy that way it wants http. I've been using opensuse on and off since 9 (great flavor BTW my favorite) Easy as you need it to be and just as complicated as you want it to be, a perfect mix.

Mar 18, 2009I have been happily running the (always latest) version of PolarCloud's Tomato software on my LinkSys WRT54G for about 2 years now. I am looking for a way to setup a Proxy Server on my Tomato-based router to use from a remote machine somewhere in the web cloud.The reason for wanting to set this up follows. I normally run Squid on a Ubuntu 8.04 box, which I use while I am away from my LAN at home to browse the net (I like to keep things between me and my ISP, as much as possible . I rely on my proxy server on a daily basis. The way it works is I SSH into my Ubuntu box, and forward squid ports. I then point my browser to the proxy on my box. For various reason, however, I would like to set it up so that I can also do this via my router. So, I would like to be able to ssh to my router (I can already do this), forward the proxy ports, and surf the nets happily via my router at home. I am happy to use existing solutions (if possible), such as privoxy or squid, and am also open to setting up a custom-based solution, as may be necessary.

Sep 5, 2009I've set up a caching nameserver on my laptop running Fedora 11. The problem with this is that NetworkManager always overwrites the entry that points to the local nameserver. NetworkManager no longer respects /etc/dhclient.conf or at least its scripts run after dhclient.conf. Also it doesn't respect /etc/sysconfig/ network-scripts/ifcfg-* setting of DNS{1.2}.The man page of NetworkManager describes scripts that run in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d which can be run when interfaces are brought up and down. I've written a script that will put the entry needed for the local nameserver.

May 29, 2010My upstream DNS server is a bit slow, so I've installed the dnsmasq cacher locally. I have the service starting on runlevels 2, 3, and 5. But I can tell by Firefox's behavior that dnsmasq does not work upon boot. Firefox lets its own DNS cache expire after 60 seconds. When I do my second Google search five minutes after my first, the second DNS lookup for www.google.com is just as slow as the first.If I manually restart the dnsmasq service, I get the fast name resolutions I expect.

Jun 27, 2011I just installed suse on this computer, and am wanting to allow other computers to store files on it as a file server. I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. When I look in the network I can see the computer running suse, but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to mount drive: connection refused by server.'

Jul 6, 2009My goal is to have users(Unix Users like root on host1) use evolution /sendmail to send and receive emails between users( Unix users either from host1 or any other host on n a private network. The network is a private network with a few servers without any connection to Internet and no DNS. They resolve one another by /etc/hosts. with smtp configured am able to send and receive emails on one machine(host1) from unix user abc on host1 to user xyz on host1 and vice versa. the commad i used to test is host1@abc #echo "this is a test mail" |mailx zyx@host1 But when i tried sending from user abc on host1 to user xyz on host2 its giving error for DNS unable to resolve hostname.
the commad i used to test is host1@abc# echo "this is a test mail" |mailx zyx@host2 create a simple sendmail config so that i can send mails between multiple hosts using unix usernames within one network. I can use one of the server as mail server and rest as clients. I dont want to configure any other softwares for pop or imap access. I want to keep it simple and use evolution on the clients to send emails between one another on the private network without internet.

But it isn't possible in 11.3 to configure it, because I cannot set the dial up internet provider phone number for this DSL device.I also tried it to configure it as a modem, but then it used the /dev/modem device, which is the wrong device for this LAN modem.

I configured the Firefox on the client to use eBox's ip address/port in the proxy settings but I still can't get on the internet.
eBox is on a vmware workstation 7. It is eBox 1.4.1
eBox has two virtual nics (above) - one is NAT (eth1) and the other is bridged (eth0)
The client is on vmware ESXi 4.0. It's an openSUSE 11.2.

Feb 25, 2010I've just installed OpenSuse 11.2 64-bit and, on the whole, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm connected to the network and I am posting this from my new system. However I cannot get any software updates or install new packages
I'm behind a (non-authenticated) proxy and, obviously, Firefox has no problem.
If I use Online Updater I just get error messages like this:
PackageKit Error repo-not-available: Failed to download ./repodata/primary.xml.gz from Index of /update/11.2
(but the site is available in Firefox).
I have tried manual updates through Yast (after setting the proxy) and get pretty much the same thing.
So far I have set the proxy in:
Firefox
/etc/sysconfig/proxy
/etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf
Computer -> Yast -> Network Services -> Proxy (That has a test function which confirms it is working).
Applications -> System Settings -> Network Settings (This tells me that the network settings are controlled by NetworkManager and can't be modified by Yast).
