OpenSUSE Network :: Can't Resolve DNS / Solve This?

I'm not sure what I did if anything but I have not used my opensuse for several months. Now when I try to connect to the Internet I can not pull any websites. The wireless connection is active and connected. I am getting an IP address via dhcp. When I try and ping out (opensuse.org) I get unknown host. If I ping an IP address or type the IP in my browser it works fine. nslookup works but only if I specify the dns server.

Fresh install of openSuSE 11.2. Laserjet 1220 multifunction device.
Successfully installed, network driver also installed, XSane shows both local and network scanner on local machine. Scans locally via both drivers.
However, networked scanner is not discovered by machines on local network, using XSane. Did a similar installation a few months ago with openSuSE 11.0, which works fine on the same client machine.
Have tried disabling firewall, but still no joy.
So, questions:
1] Is there anything I have missed? 2] Is anything known to be broken in 11.2?
I have a mac and an openSUSE box connected wirelessly to a router. From my mac, if I ping the Linux machine by both ip address and hostname "elmo.local", I get a response. If I ping my mac from the Linux machine using its ip address, I get a response. However, if I ping the mac from the Linux box using its name "kermit.local" - nothing!
This means in order to share files between them via the network, I have to use the ip address rather than name, but I'd rather not. When I had Ubuntu installed instead of openSUSE this all worked fine out of the box, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the setup of openSUSE rather than the router or the mac.
I just installed opensuse 11.4 and i'm not being able to connect to my wireless lan. It recognizes my network, but when I click "ok" after typing the password it is like I had done nothing, no connection is set at all.I guess it is probably some configuration stuff since my notebook recognizes all available wireless networks. Sorry about the lack of details, but that is all I got.
I'm able to connect to my company's VPN network using GNOME NetworkManager but when I try to login to the remote system using SSH it is not able to resolve the DNS name, It works fine if I use IP instead of the FQDN.
Just recently installed Opensuse 11.2 in a KDE environment. The problem I am facing is that when I connect it to my network either via wired or wirless neither getting internet or access to the network although the network manager shows the connection as active I am using a Dlink Di-524 Wireless Router at home The Wirless router for the computer is Broadcom BCM 4312 Was able to install the drivers for this from the packman repository
Also when I connect my laptop directly to the internet connection via wired it is working fine. However if i connect it to my wireless router either over wifi or thru wired it just shows connected but i can neither access internet or other computers on the network. Have checked the wireless router other computers (windows and ubuntu are being able to access the internet via it) Results of my ifconfig-a command when i am connected over my wirless connection code...
How do you get linux to resolve local hostnames without DNS?
I've recently migrated from a fully windows home network, to a few linux machines and im unable to ping any local machines with hostname via these linux machines. i can ping IP and internet hostnames. also, windows > anything pings ok too. however linux > anything will not ping via hostname.
I beleive it's an additional service running on windows to resolve hostnames without DNS (wins/netbios).
DNS is done via a netgear DG834 router (DNS forwarding).
I know i could either use direct IP, or add machines into the hosts file, but im wondering if theres some way around that and to have it dynamically update like it does on the windows machines. static mappings seem a bit silly inside DHCP zones
I've seen some reports of avahi causing local network issues (taking over the .local domain), but i think this only extends to having to manually enter in .local after the hostname and even after removing avahi, the problem is still present.
I installed 11.4 from a verified and checked CD. Had and worked through the DSL and ipv6 problems discussed elsewhere in this forum. So browsers now work on the internet, but neither zypper nor yast will resolve the 11.4 repositories, so no refresh, no updates. Browsers bring up the repositories fine, so I can download and install an rpm that way, but it's not a life. Haven't been able to find this issue elsewhere, asis usually the case.
When I set my DNS servers via Yast>Network Devices>Network Settings>Hostname DNS it accepts the addresses, but then when I check then the next time they are faded out. I set them again, but same results.
I have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router. Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525. I am unable to connect to wireless networks. I have a fresh installation of Ubuntu 8.04. I have installed Ndiswrapper (ndiswrapper-utils_1.8-0ubuntu2_i386.deb) and the GUI for ndiswrapper. The ndiwrapper GUI reports that the hardware was not found. Yet I am able to connect to the wlan using Windows.
I previously had my Virtual Box install of Ubuntu set to have the Network via "host-Only Adapter". But recently I needed to get on the internet on that install, so I changed it to "NAT" and restarted. It still cannot get on the internet! How can I fix this?
Some notes:
1. I have other virtual box installs that CAN get on the internet 2. This one was able to get on the internet prior to setting it to "host only adapter"
but after a few seconds the 192.168.1.56 disappears and after some other seconds disappears the inet6 address too. When I press in the nm-applet it requires me the password but in the meantime it try to connect.
At uni, the connection is a DHCP one. It works for the first few seconds but after it doesn't.
Any possible solution?

I have installed openSuSE 11.2 and my fingerprint reader have been detected on Hardware Information. But when I try to enable it on "Fingerprint Reader", it throws an error: Cannot write PAM settings as you can see on the following pic:
I'm trying to install workbench on my opensuse 11.2 x64 bit version but I got a problem with python available version on opensuse is 2.6.2 and the required version is 2.3.
Just reinstalled kde 11.3 on second hd. Everything seems to be okay except for getting additional repositories. Under yast I get the message unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. Any ideas on what I can check?
If I try to start gparted, sometimes it works fine, other times, it throws this error:
Code: Could not initialise connection to hald. Normally this means the HAL daemon (hald) is not running or not ready I have tried manually starting hal daemon,but nothing happens.
I click the music i would like to play and AMAROK loads up fine but when i click play nothing happens my speakers work fine as i can listen to music on ..... fine .
After running updates yesterday (Friday) now the Shutdown and Log Off buttons don't work in KDE. This happens with the taskbar buttons, and in the Leave menu. The only way out now is to ALT+F1 into a console, log in as root, and run shutdown. The system will shutdown at that point, but it's pretty inconvenient. I'm using the login manager that installs with KDE (can't remember the name) since Gnome was installed as a secondary desktop.
I cannot browse the network from Ubuntu, but I can see the ubuntu machines from the windows including file and printing. Nautilus gives the following error: Could not display "network:///". Nautilus cannot handle "network" locations.
Workgroup names all set the same Sharing allowed on all machines
I have read all of the postings on this I think and have not been able to implement a solution.
Have openoffice 3.1.1 and samba shares set up between my Opensuse 11.2 desktop and wife and daughters widows7 notebooks. Can access everything perfectly over the shares except anything in Openoffice.
When I try to open a file located on one of the two notebooks Openoffice gives the message "you can only select local files"
I found an old solution from 2005 on this in google suggesting that you had to mount manually the remote drive. That seems extremely clunky and cumbersome.
There must be a way to enable Openoffice to open remote files. I can't believe in 2009 Openoffice is not able to do this without jumping through hoops.
I finally convinced my wife to remove Windows from her Acer Aspire 5680 and instead to use OpenSuse, but unfortunately I am having some major trouble for no reason.
You see as soon as I installed the OS, I tried to add some new programs, like Thunderbird, etc but I keep getting an Accessing the Package Management failed error message. It says that it can't continue because process 9172 is blocking it. But I opened the System Monitor and can't find the **** 9172! My OpenSuse installation doesn't have this problem.
I bought a Linux magazine as a Christmas present attached to it was a 8GB distro-loaded disc sporting Ubuntu 9.10 (which is already on my system,) Mandriver, and open-SUSE 11.2 which I decided to install. Problem is, I can't get into Ubuntu anymore, where all my mail music ect is.
Ubuntu is listed with vista in window 2 of open-suse grub. When I try to boot Ubuntu I get an earlier kernel splash which is somewhat magnified and busybox v1.1.3. Vista boots OK.
Would un installing openSUSE put things back as they were? I can learn about open-SUSE using the DVD
Configuration: AMD 2500+, 2GB RAM, ATI HD3850 AGP Problem: Can not install OpenSUSE 11.3. Boot from the disc - the installation screen resolutions, modes of installation - everything is in order. But when the installation can proceed - loading (logo) and just a black screen - possibly the installation goes - but no picture. Also try to set mode "vesa" - loading equipment "ok" ... "ok" ... "ok" ... "ok" ... and again in the black screen.
I have followed the posted instructions on the "restricted formats" as specified in the stickie on the forum.
When I insert an audio CD, I can see the mp3/ folder in KDE with the tracks on the CD, but whenever I try to copy one of the mp3 files from the folder I get a VERY wide error messagebox stating that lame threw an error.
[When I use the command line tool "ripit" - the mp3s are generated without problems, so I assume all my encoders are working.]
Copying an ogg file with the KDE audiocd integration works fine, but unfortunately ogg is not supported on an iPod, and since ripping CDs through a VM with iTunes takes forever and a day, I want to rip the mp3 files and then copy to the VM so I can use iTunes to sync them to the iPod (sigh).
And yes, I would prefer to use Amarok to sync to the iPod directly but I made the mistake of buying an iPod recently and I've found that the 5/6th gens don't work (and probably never will) due to the hash encryption.
I have three Debian systems running, along with several XP laptops, PS3 and two DirecTV systems. I use two of the three Debian systems as media servers, and the third is an older system mostly for playing around with. My home network is running fine with the following nuisance. The two newer Debian (Lenny) systems are <barney> and <mitzi>, the older is named <oscar>, running Debian Sarge 3.1. From either locally or remote login to <barney> and <mitzi> I can ssh into either of the other two systems, however when logged into <oscar> I cannot ssh by name to either of the other systems. e.g. ssh: mitzi: Temporary failure in name resolution..However, from <oscar> I can ping outside my network (e.g. ping www.google.com) with no problems.I can also ssh to the other systems via IP address, just not by name.
I've compared the /etc/ssh/ssh_config, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/ssh/sshd_config and other files between the two systems and not seeing anything peculiar. arp, route, etc., don't show different behavior between the systems either.
I'll apologize in advance for I'm sure this has been covered already, but I'm not sure of the search terms to even use to begin solving this problem. I don't know what I don't know.
I have three computers on my home network and want to reach them by their name instead of IP address since their ip is dynamically assigned. I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL router and have noticed that there exists a "DHCP Clients Table" in the router that seems to hold all the necessary information - host names and ip addresses.
How can I get my computers to use that as the lookup table to resolve the host names? And is this even an optimal way of being able to resolve local names?
