Hardware :: External HDD Not Initializing Until Logged In As Root?
Feb 18, 2009
Fedora 9 and a maxtor 500gb external It seems i cant get the hd to initialize (not sure if thats the correct word for it) until I log in as root. I can see the icon on the desktop for it and everything, but when i double click on the icon nothing happens. It also doesnt appear in /media/. If I log out of the user account and log into root, all of the sudden i can open the icon in both root AND the user account. It also shows up in /media/. I'm not sure if its a permissions issue or something else.
ps: using ssh to log into root from another machine makes no difference though, only using X or whatever its called from the physical machine.

I can use the accents (tilde, acute, ...) normally when I am the root, but when I log into my user account they re not recognized in most applications (opera, emacs, amsn, python idle,...) although they work in other applications (terminal, vim, iceweasel...). I guess that would have a simple solution. Something is right in the root account and wrong in my user account, but I cant figure it out. My layout is USA International (with dead keys).

I am using Fedora 10 .Generally to update I open a virtual console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2,login as root and give the "yum update" command. Then I continue using my graphical terminal for other tasks from the 'non-root' account..Now my room-mate comes uses my 'non-root' account to browse web for few minutes and then opens a terminal types "halt", ENTER and viola...! My root account seems to be insulted by a 'non-root' user!.When I am doing updates or other important work as root any silly user can just 'halt' my computer. Can somebody tell me how to set up my computer so that when root is logged in no other user can simply halt the computer.

on my netbook I've tried to make possible for my user to shutdown without needing a password. battery could run low when I'm not in front of it. Editing sudoers has allowed my user to shutdown the system, but Gnome still prompts me for the root password whenever root is logged in too. That's usually the case, because to avoid entering the root password multiple times whenever I need elevated privileges and not wanting to cache the root password, I keep a Root Terminal always open.

Is there a way to fix this ? I need to be able to edit files with root privileges, not to mention that I don't want it to make any backups ( can be turned off ).

I have updated the gdm file to be able to log in as root in Fedora 10.Nevertheless after I had selected package updates to be installed logged in as root I still get an error message that I do not have enough privileges. The terminal installation method is a bit of a problem since I do not think it will search for dependencies and therefore it can be excessively long to figure out what is missing for a package installation. In simple cases it works OK, but in more difficult cases it is a bear.

I'm trying to install phpMyAdmin on my Ubuntu 10.10 server. I type the following command (I don't use "sudo" because I'm logged in as root, I know its not safe):
Quote: apt-get install phpmyadmin and go through the installation. I allow the installation to configure the database, and I chose the correct server (Apache2), when it asks for passwords, I use the same password that I use for the rest of the server (i.e. it is the account password for root, sudo, and my account). Once the installation is complete, I try and access it from a computer on the same network. I type "http://***.***.*.*/phpmyadmin" and I get the message saying the directory isn't there. I go into Webmin to confirm that the directory isn't there, and it isn't.
My questions are (1) Why isn't the phpmyadmin directory in my Apache Server root? (2) Is it installed with apt-get, if so, where? (3) How do I know what server I selected for it to install to? (4) What do I need to do to get it to install correctly?

But I've gotten as far as getting davfs to work on RH Linux. However, on SuSE I'm logged in as root, but when I issue the mount command I'm getting "user davfs2 does not exist". (I was getting "group davfs2 does not exist", so I created the group (groupadd davfs2) then added the user davfs2 to the new group by following the instructions at The Nerdrium : Linux : Creating Groups.
The command I'm issuing is: mount -t davfs http://.....
I get challenged for credentials, but after I enter them I get the "user davfs2 does not exist" message.

I have a Red Hat 4 server with Sungard Luminis installed on it. I was following some instructions on setting up Luminis to start at boot. One of the steps was modifying the sudoers file. Since modifying the sudores file, I am no longer able to "su" to root when logged in as a normal user. When doing so, I get su: incorrect password after putting in the password. I have another server with the exact same setup, broken one is test, the other is production, that works just fine. I made no changes to my production server. I've been looking at different things all day and the only difference I have found between the two are the results I get from running rpm -q --verify coreutils. Running that on my prodution server returns nothing. Results from my test server are below. Is this what is causing my problems? If so, what's the fix? I haven't found that yet. I've checked /etc/pam.d/su, both servers are the same.
rpm -q --verify coreutils
.....UG.. /bin/basename
.....UG.. /bin/cat
.....UG.. /bin/chgrp

I have a large external drive, which I connect to my laptop via a PCMCIA card - the machine is old and does not have USB 2.0 built in, so I use the PCMCIA card for that.
I am thinking of the following setup, and hope you can give me some tips on whether or not that would be a sound solution:
- designate a boot partition on the laptop's internal hard drive, which could store kernels
- make up a linux partition (or more than one) to use as root for any distribution on the external drive
- keep /home as separate partition on the external drive
My goal in mind is to be able to boot more than one Linux partition from the external drive. I can't make it through USB boot because the PCMCIA card is not recognized before a kernel module is loaded, and I can't use the internal USB 1.1 port for the external drive.
Do you think this is the way to go? Currently, I only have my /home partition mounted off the external drive.

i have inherited a mixed bag of sorts: several xp users updating an access mdb with the BE on a lamp stack shared via samba. i have a backup device which gets mounted at: /media/disk... each client record (has) a folder by the companyname on the samba share, and all relative documents are placed there. when the backup script runs, it just copies newer or missing files.
someone has been renaming folders, and not matching the folder name to the related companyname from the mdb. so...the backup script captures and duplicates the data in the renamed folders. some client records also have periods in the name (not required from a data pov), such as 'Company Ltd.' instead of 'Company Ltd'. i can produce a list of company names as the folders should be found easily enough, but get a little stuck with the linux scripting.
i can easily remove and further prevent any unwanted punctuation in the company name on the client record, and create the correct folder name on the samba share with vba, but would also like to:
-for each 'client activity' folder on the backup device
-rename the folder by removing punctuation marks
or
-delete the folder if is a dupe
i tried: ls -al | grep '&' - it properly returns only those lines with an ampersand in the folder name, but returns all folders when i try that with a '.'.
what would be the easiest method to do the renaming? i thought if there was a way to change ownership of the mounted device, then the vba code (easy to write) would be simple.
OK - i just ran chown -R on the external device, changing ownership to (me) instead of root. didn't want to because it took too long, but can now use the MoveFolder method of the filesystemobject from my app to do the renaming instead of some sort of bash script (which i was dreading).

I tried two times to make an new partition (after the FAT partition on it) on my external hard drive with YaST>Partitioner.Fist I had tried ext3 now I have ext2 on it.Both times the partition (or the corresponding folder in /media) was only writeable to the superuser/root but not to a normal user (readable to the normal user). Root is the owner. The FAT-Partition on the same external drive is owned by the normal user who was logged in as I plugged the USB-cable in.I can unmount both partitions als normal user in natilus.1. Can I start nautilus as root to change the permissions?2. What have I done wrong? Should I use an SuSE Live-CD or an CD with an special partitioning-program instead?ng X20) openSuse 11.1 and Gnome 2.24.1 (mostly, 1 account is using KDE) and Kernel Linux 2.6.27.45-01.1-pae. "/home" is on an separated partition (as part of an extended partition). I have also 2 NTFS partitions for Windows XP (System and Data), and a FAT, a root (/) and a swarp partition.

I have Seagate Freeagent Go 500GB external hard drive that I use for backup. I wanted to resize the partition so I used GParted to shrink the 500GB NTFS partition to 400GB. The other 100 I wanted to encrypt and use for some other more important files. For some reason, the shrink failed and I disconnected the hard drive and reconnected it. I didn't see the icon appear on the desktop. I went into the Disk Utility to discover that GParted's shrink error deleted all of the partitions on my hard drive. So I created a new 400GB NTFS partition and put back all of my files. The other 100 is unallocated currently.
It will normally mount automatically and show up on the desktop but the hard drive won't mount without me going into the Disk Utility and mounting it through there. I can't even mount it from the Terminal with root privileges. It gives me this:
Quote:
sudo mount /media/My Data
mount: can't find /media/My Data in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
Now, I can unmount with root privileges and I can unmount it from the Disk Utility. I can browse and edit the files within. But I can't unmount it from within Nautilus or on the desktop (the Safely Remove Drive option is not there).
The new 400GB partition also isn't detected by GParted. It just shows the whole drive as unallocated.

I have one Centos Server and I want to forward root mail to 1 external account: [URL] I installed sendmail and created /root/.forward with this content: [URL] and I sent a test mail with this command: /usr/sbin/sendmail root <prueba.txt But nothing was forwarded.
After that I ran the same command with the verbose option:
/usr/sbin/sendmail -v root <prueba.txt
And this is the output:

For some reason sendmail tried to connect to example.com smtp server and couldn't reach it. I am sure this is because the smtp server for example.com domain is not example.com is mail.example.com. Besides mail.example.com requires authentication, username , password and the smtp port is not the default 25 is 9999. configure sendmail to forward root mail to a smtp server that requires authentication, username, password with a not the default 25 port?

I need some help. I'm not exactly new to linux but I'm not an expert either. I decided to try and play around with GRUB and see if I could get the GRUB gui and themes working. Apparently I did something and now, when I start up my computer, all I get is code...
I know little to nothing about grub. I will welcome any and all help or advice with this. Let me know if you need any other information and I will try to post it. Also, I have no idea whether I am running legacy or 2. It originally told me I was running legacy and I attempted to upgrade to 2 but I have no idea if it actually upgraded.
