I try to configure account lock out after 5 failed connections attempt with help of PAM. I add the following string to /etc/pam.d/login:account required pam_tally.so per_user deny=5 ulock_time=180 no_magic_root reset.Unfortunatly this solution doesn`t work. Can you give me advice how to set 5 connection attempt, block user and unlock account after 180 seconds?

This sets up all my password requirements and this works. Now I need to crack getting the account to lockout after three failed attempts. Let me know what files you need to see in the pam.d directory and I'll paste them in.

In the logs I can see how the count of failed logins increase and exceeds my deny option but the account isn't locked
Do I need any other option in the PAM file? Is there any other way to lock an account?

When I left the machine the screen saver kicked in and wouldn't let meback on with my password I chose during installation (and the only password I chose!) Re-booting the machine sorted the problem...until next time! I have now disabled the lock out for the screen saver so things ought to work now, but why did it do this? New with openSuse!

I thought it would work, but when i tried an install of 11.2, also, i tried a debian install, it did the same thing, it froze up in the middle of the install with the error Code: unable to allocate and lock memory. I guess that eboostr doesn't work, but is there a way to use a flash drive as ram in virtual box?

I have a dual-boot system with windows xp and suse 11.2. The last time tried to enter to suse i couldn't login to my account ,only as root. I tried to solve this through suse dvd repair option andit detected a problem in grub. i repaired it but still nothing.Also the /home partition exists and i can access it when i login as root.

So, I just installed a VM with OpenSuse 11.2 and joined it to my AD W2k3 domain. After correcting the clock problems, everything is running fine except a strange feature that I was not able to solve.After a reboot, I'm not able to login with a domain account. I enter the username/password, choose the domain then it the input fields become grey for 1-2 seconds then the password field is reset and nothing happens.The most strange part comes when you logon with the local root account. Also when highlighting text on a page and right clicking with the mouse no search option is given. I created a new user and all works as it should for the new user. What is wrong with my user account? I have reset default values in Konqueror setup.

One user account completely ignores all keyboard input. No other account demonstrates this bizarre behavior. The faulty account has had occasional keyboard difficulty but it has always been related to the Virtual Machines (VirtualBox); the hosting account always functioned correctly.
Then the ban on keyboard input. Poof! "Keyboard? What keyboard? I don't see no stinking keyboard!"
It is not the physical keyboard. Three different hardware exhibit the same fault. It is not the motherboard; two mb's show the same fault. It is only that one account. And I even took the Windows route of re-installing the OS (what a waste of time that was).
If something changed, I am not aware of it (although something must have).
My install of 11.4 has been running perfectly for for several weeks now. But- (always a but) today it started acting up. I cannot log in to any user account including Root after logging out. After a cold boot I can log in again anywhere but after logging out I have to reboot again then I can get back in to any account once. After logging out any attempted log in causes the splash screen to blank for a few seconds and then it comes back with the previous successful user name log in but typing in the password blanks the screen a few seconds again. Clicking on a user account also blanks the screen a few seconds and then it again comes back with the previous log in users name.

i am trying to install nedit editor on my account on a web hosting server. I have downloaded the nedit tar file from Index of /ftp/v5_5/executables and ran the command tar -zcvf nedit-5.5-Linux-x86.tar. The files have been unzipped successfully. In the README file it is asking for to do a make to complete the installation.
From this point on i am lost and not sure i to do the rest. I know that i need to do a make, but running just make requires a target. I am not sure what should be my target to finish the installation of nedit. Here is a list of files as a result of un-tarring my tar file:

I cannot log into the normal user account after shutting down the OPENSUSE 11.1 system by cutting off electricity. The system always returns to the login page which requires to choose account id and enter passwd even when I type in correct normal user id and passwd. The root account can be used.

In general system is working fine, but steel I cannot resolve couple of really annoying issues: 1. I've created encrypted partitions for swap and home during OS installation. As result the system keep asking for passwords for each of encrypted partitions before show login screen. That leads to situation when I have to type 3 passwords during each boot/reboot. I was using the same configuration (swap and home were encrypted) on Ubuntu 11.04 and there both encrypted partitions were mount automatically with no password typing after login to the system. Could you please tell how I can configure the same behavior on openSUSE 11.4 ?
2. I've enabled auto screen lock after 5 mins being inactive. As result when I going back to laptop and to unlock the screen the system shows login screen (default login screen with user selection). But when user and password filled in I click login it creates entire new KDE session. Therefore all staff that was open before screen lock is gone. However old session is still in the system (it appears in output from 'w' command).
I wrote a policy form my firewall with fwbuilder it compiles fine, but when i use the installer ti gives me this:
