I migrated from 11.0 to a new install of 11.3. Under 11.0 I was using Kinternet for a dialup connection through an external USB modem.Kinternet isn't available under 11.3, so I installed KPPP but haven't been able to get it to work. The modem and provider has been configured through YaST.At first with KPPP there was an error with permissions as a user. One old thread discussed how to fix this through chmod, which was successful for me.Now there is the error message 'Unable to create modem lock file'.Under configuration, use lock file is checked.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to "unlock" file info in Koala to become visible in the properties of that file? For example, when opening an .mp3 in VLC and checking the information, I am able to see and edit extra info that I do not see when simply right clicking the file and selecting properties. Another example is that GIMP saves comments to images, but I have nowhere to view these comments once they are saved. I would like to see more info when checking the properties of a file, dare I say like Windows enables users to. So is there a terminal code or plugin that I can install?

View 2 Replies View RelatedBack when I used openSUSE 10.3 with KDE 3.5.x I used the KDE-specific version of blueproximity found here: K-Blueproximity KDE-Apps.org. The thing that made it great was that it integrated kscreensaver.
It hasn't been updated in a couple years and isn't compatible with 4.3.x so I'm using the non-KDE-ified standard blueproximity package. For the most part it works. Based on comments I found somewhere I'm running the following command to lock the screen:
Code:
qdbus org.kde.screensaver /ScreenSaver Lock ; xset dpms force off
and to unlock:
Code:
xset dpms force on ; killall -9 krunner_lock kblankscrn.kss
.
The problem is that the unlock command doesn't work. My monitors will reactivate and the screensaver will display but in order to actually unlock I have to hit a key/move the mouse and enter my password.
what the command should be to actually unlock the screen since the above doesn't work.
I just did a fresh install of 11.4
My system auto-logs in and I know there's a bug in seahorse that doesn't like that method.
Anyway, I tried to unlock my "Passwords: login" in seahorse, but it won't budge.
The details about this user are that I re-used an 11.3 /home/$user directory. Could that be the reason?
I logged out of the Desktop and back in using my password manually.
I can sudo with my password. I can change the system with my password everywhere except in seahorse.
The password is exactly the same in 11.4 as it was in 11.3.
The .gnupg/ directory is 600 and its contents are all 600 except for agent.info which is 644.
Following a year old post, I got this from shell code...
When I unlock the screen, I'm presented with an opaque dialogue (white box), regardless of whether I have a screen-saver or not. This is a cosmetic issue only because I can type my password to unlock the screen successfully, but I'd like a solution. I'm using oS 11.2 with KDE 4.5 (but the issue predates updating to 4.5).This is the only "issue" I've experienced since migrating my laptop (was Windoze 7) and desktop (was MS SQL server 2003) to oS

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I've tried finding a solution to this on my own for the past few days (believing it is a simple solution), but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I'm running 11.2 and I have Evolution as a start-up program and I have finally got my wireless working, so it connects automatically at start-up also. I figured out how to have network manager automatically unlock the default keyring, but...
Each time evolution starts up I am prompted to unlock the default keyring. How can I give Evolution permission / access to the default keyring automatically so it can check me email upon start-up without me having to type in my password?
Every so often I need to manually IP if I'm hooking up an AP device or router and such. In windows it takes all of 10 seconds to do. In Ubuntu I know how to manually edit the /etc/networking/interfaces file but the last couple of days I figured it might be simpler to use the Networking Configuration GUI tool in System Preferences area. I edit the Auto eth0 device but it never seems to work for some reason. Can you use this tool to GUI change your IP's or do you have to stick with manual edits?

I've trying to get dnsmasq working as a combined dns and dhcp server. It's infuriating so far... In short, the DNS works fine for anything added to /etc/hosts, and the dhcp works fine, but the dhcp is not updating the dns with hostname information from clients.
The outcome of this is that i can only ping a node by hostname if i know it's address, which means setting a static dhcp allocation and putting the hostname into /etc/hosts manually, which is very annoying and kind of defeats the poit of dhcp. There must be a way to get dnsmasq to update the hosts file, surely The clients aren't using fqdn's if that matters, and i think i've tried every combinination of "expand-hosts" and "domain=" following is the dnsmasq config file contents:
domain-needed
bogus-priv
except-interface=tun0

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like to upgrade the kernel in the ISO of a Ubuntu 9.10-based CD with proprietary applications, burn a new CD with this modified ISO, boot up with it, upgrade + add + remove modules and applications, and finally save the running system into a new ISO file which would now have the latest and greatest.
I have a couple of questions: 1. How can I download the kernel manually? Where can I find the latest vmlinuz + initrd files for Ubuntu 9.10?
2. Is it just a matter of replacing those two files, or are there other dependencies I should update in the rest of the ISO, eg. isolinuxisolinux.cfg: Change initrd.gz to initrd.lz, etc.?

I got a hold of openSUSE11.2 recently, burned it, and booted the disc up.Now i got a problem.I ain't too experienced in partitioning, so i choose everything as selected in the installation(i downloaded the full DVD, not a live CD)and i got to the partitioning part.I have this:
500GB WD Caviar Blue SATA2
80GB ATA
I installed Ubuntu on the 500gb with wubi and partitioned 30GB for it.Well that one is easier, i have absolutely no experience in installing from a CD/DVD.I saw instlux, but it wouldn't run from Win7 Any guide on how to manually partition 30GB for openSUSE too?
I just downloaded OpenOffice 3.2.1 from the openoffice.org weebsite. I followed the instructions precisely and everytime ended up in the same error message - 'error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (Permission denied)'. I am using Fedora 13.

The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.
