OpenSUSE Install :: Software Reported Dvd:/// Not Found
Jul 23, 2010
I'm doing an distro upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3 and for the DVD drive, the repo URL comes up as dvd:/// in ast and zypper. However medium not read is being reported, forcing me to find out exactly what "dvd:///" is pointing to.
My DVD drive is certainly readable and mountable and sits at /dev/dvd (symlink for /dev/sr0). I usually mount it manually, but the problem here is I don't know how to find out what "dvd:///" represents.

I installed Fedora 15 twice last night because I thought I had screwed up the installation somehow when I ran a df -h and found that it reported all my LVM partitions twice (/, /home, and /var) and it also showed /var/tmp mounted on the same logical volume that /var was mounted on (lv02 = /var AND lv02=/var/tmp). I've never seen this before and it definitely didn't appear like this in Fedora 14. Is this something new to Fedora 15?

After installing 64 bit 11.2 with no apparent problems: computer hangs up on desktop boot opensuse 11.2-2.6.31.5-0.1, however I can boot from failsafe opensuse 11.2-2.6.31.5-0.1. I had problems trying to install Ubuntu so I checked out the opensuse. I do not know if this is an easy fix! I decided to avoid buying anymore windows system software. I ran memory test with no problems. The firmware test reported 4 errors. I have windows XP installed on other hard drive - no problems there.

I am an openSuSE user for many years. My current installation is openSuSE 11.2. However, my first was SuSE 6.4 and I have been _constantly_ upgrading since then until reaching the current openSuSE 11.2. The technical issue I have been facing lately is with the kernel version of my current system: although it should be 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, as this is the one I have chosen via the online update mechanism and the yast2 system boot-loader procedure, grub shows it as preselected, the boot procedure in the end greets me mentioning this very kernel version, _but_ when I issue the command: uname -a in a command prompt, I am informed of using linux kernel version: 2.6.18.2-34-default #1 SMP PREEMPT
I am really quite puzzled, since I _cannot_ find any such vmlinuz file under /boot/ ! Could it be that my system properly runs with the expected kernel version, but uname mistakes it with a different one? Is there a way to determine the actual version of the linux kernel that my system currently runs with? If it's a problem with uname, have you got any suggestions that could potentially shed some light towards the origin/cause of the reported issue?

I was struggling to find the information so I thought it would be easier to ask here. What does the load average as reported by top mean ? To me those are 3 mysterious values, which most likely refer to some average CPU usage and this is all I know about it (not sure if it's true). What is the maximum value for this parameter (I guess the minimum is 0.00) and what does it mean ?

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.
I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.
But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.
I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.

I've been using Suse on my 7 year old computer for years but now have a shiny new Dell Inspiron 570 MT with AMD Athlon? II X4 630.I thought that I should try the 64 bit version of Suse 11.2 on the new machine and it now dual boots, but I have an ethernet problem.Yast tells me:NetLink BCM57788 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (Not connected)BusID : 0000:02:00.0Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details.I searched for 'eth' in dmesg output without success but found 'net' in this section:

I'm trying to migrate from Ubuntu but I'm stuck at partitioning part of the installation... The problem is that the partitions are not recognized (I have NTFS + EXT3). I see only /dev/sda and it says it's unpartitioned When installing Ubuntu I had similar problem and I was solving it by removing dmraid.

done 11.4 update from DVD on my two laptops and I'm trying to do my home machine now.Problem is that the DVD update does not find any repos. I told the update system to set up wired network using DHCP and everything seems OK, when I check the box to use separate media during installation the system won't find any community repositories and when I specify URL it simlply won't connect to the repo. As for as I can tell there is a connection to the internet, but maybe not

I previously used 11.1 with KDE 3.5. Since I have /home on a separate partition I decided to install 11.2 from scratch to avoid any conflicts with KDE 4 installing. No problems on first reboot and some updates were installed. Now at each boot I'm dropped into text login. If I try <startx> I get <no screens found> and /var/log/Xorg.0.log gives <screens found but none have usable configuration>. However if I add vga=952 at the boot screen (for a 1280x800 laptop) I get into graphical login and everything works well (yes even KDE 4). Below is an snip from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

I installed OpenSuSE 11.2 64bit from a Linux Magazine #111 dvd and now cannot create DomU guests. The exact error is in the subject line. It is sitting on a software RAID-1 partionion on two (mirrored) hard disks. When I first install - formatting all partitions - it reports error 17 and won't load the OS. After running the Repair installed system from the DVD I get the impression it is doing things twice rather than doing the repairs once on the RAIDed partition. Should I go back to 11.1?

The problem I'm having right now is that our standard repo that was have set up [URL] doesn't seem to be working as an install point (I keep getting "no repository found"), even though it works great as a means for a software repo (Its used by several hundred other servers). Is there a difference between a software repository and an installation repository?
