Fedora :: 13 Windows 7 Dualboot And Hard Disk - Complete Loss Of All My Data
Oct 11, 2010Last time I installed Ubuntu in a dualboot configuration with Win7 on one of my machines, my entire boot sector and Windows install got corrupted, resulting in a complete loss of all my data and requiring a fresh install of Windows.
I looked into this a bit after the fact, and it seemed to me it was due to conflicting hard disk geometry between Linux and Windows.
My question is, how likely is this to happen with Fedora? Is this because of Ubuntu? A bad install? Is there someway I can avoid this from happening when I install Fedora if it will happen?

I can't back up my data for reasons I'm not going to go into so I need to know if I'll lose my files...there isn't anything truly important...just stuff that'd be mildly irritating to lose...

IIRC, it was possible to change partition sizes from the install disk in repair mode (?) But I cannot find that repair mode on the 11.3 install disk. Has it been removed or is it somewhere deeper in the install or update process ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Losing Valuable Internal HD Data
Apr 1, 2011to start: I am a 100% linux virgin. I have yet to boot once. I have a 1TB external HD bought today (), which I formatted to 32GB Fat32 and the rest NTFS. (The 32GB partition is the second in order) I tried installing 11.4 with the full release DVD, and managed to get through the 'partition' part of the setup without raging about losing valuable internal HD data. I changed / to the 32GB partition, and figured a native format was safer: formatted it in setup as Ext4, and installed after ignoring the under 128GB warning (the machine is only a few months old).
The installation seemed to go well. The loadup was unsuccessful. There were plenty of "fails". I was given a command screen with "Login:" and after, "Password:". It seemed to take the Login, however the correct password echoed back a "Login module failed" or something similar. Interestingly, an incorrect password yielded a "Incorrect Login". What I may need to do (?):
1. I did not specify a /home or swap during install
2. ?
3. ?
etc

I think (but I'm not totally sure) I installed opensuse in dev/sda6 and dev/sda7...what is the right thing to do?? should I have to delete /dev/sda5 /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda7 partitions and then install opensuse 11.3 in the new free space??

Well yesterday this disk just would not mount.
Read through related posts but nothing seemed to work. Even tried it on a Windows machine.
Tried TestDisk utility. Found nothing wrong with the drive, but still could not repair the MBR.log code...
Palimpsest Utility recognized the drive, but just will not let me do anything with it except format it.
How can i repair the partitions and MBR without losing all my data?

Ubuntu :: Transferring Data From Hard Disk?
May 30, 2011I was dual booting Ubuntu 8.10 and Windows Vista on a Acer Aspire 5920. My laptop went for service and the company said they will give me a fresh laptop instead of the one I am using now for they cannot set it right.
When I plugged in my hard disk through an external cable onto a windows machine it detected only the data present (which is almost negligible in my case) in the vista partition. I would like to transfer all the data I have from hard disk at least the one in the Ubuntu 8.10 to my new laptop on which I plan to run Ubuntu. Can someone guide me on how to go about doing it? Also is it possible to transfer all the installed softwares so that they start running in the new laptop without any extra effort?

Sep 13, 2011I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.
I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.
But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.
I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.
OpenSUSE Install :: Mount With NFS An USB Hard Disk?
Jul 5, 2011I've used YAST to include a USB hard disk in the export list and mount it to remote machine with NFS. That worked first time the disk was mounted. On the next reboot I saw that the USB disk was mounted again in "/media" but in new folder and its previous folder existed but empty and was mounted with nfs. It seems that first nfs comes mounted in booting time and then USB gets mounted after logging as a user. USB hard disk finds its folder occupied and automatically creates new folder in "/media". What should be done in order to USB hard disk and nfs to be mounted in the same point automatically on the boot ? The second question : When I mount an external disk to be accessible remotely with nfs I get refused to unmount the disk as a USB device. Is it possible to be unmounted as a USB disk done without unmounting it as a nfs as well?

Aug 28, 2010I have a 250 GB external disk, where there was store a hundred and something GB of data. Pictures, music, documents and TV-shows. It was FAT32. In an attemt to make an live USB drive with openSUSE, I did exactly what I shoulden't do: I mistook the external disk for the the USB drive. Now the external disk has a 700 mb linux partition, while 232.2 GB is unpartitioned. TestDisk from CGSecurity is looking to see if there is a lost partition table there, somewhere. Is there anything I can do? There was no formating, so the data is still there (except for those 650 mb that was overwritten). Is there any way to rebuild the old partition?

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving Opensuse From One Hard Disk To Another?
Aug 30, 2010Recently I was working on something on my windows partition (on the same HD as opensuse), and all the sudden windows stopped working and I got some bad sectors on my HD.
Now, my opensuse installation is on the same HD as windows, but I need to get rid of that HD soon because it's starting to get worse (and I think opensuse is randomly crashing because of it).
Is there any way to transfer my opensuse parititon/os to another hard drive?

I have downloaded the new 11.2 version of opensuse and it now recognises it, so thanks for that.Only trouble is I get an error message of:Failure occured during following action: Setting disk label of disk /dev/sda to msdos. System error code was: -1013A little history is required in orderI had windows xp installed to begin with (fool me ay!) and when I installed the adobe flash player 10, it always crashed my internet explorer, so i managed to find flash player 7, which I installed and it worked (kind of; it played videos, but stallingly; although this might be to do with the fact that i was also upgrading to IE 8 at the same time) but after a few seconds of it playing a video the computer reset and the message DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER appears. It seems that this flash player was some kind of virus and I worry that it may of damaged the flash drive, or is it that it's just messed up the MBR.

Intel Pentium 4 processor 32 bit
512 mb RAM
80 gb Hard Disk
I made a 20gb partition on my hard disk and formatted it as fat32 for installing suselinux on it. I changed my boot priority and booted the system from the bootable dvd. The problems are:
1). Message is displayed telling to ensure that cd 1 is in the drive. I cannot make out what this means when the dvd is already in the drive. If I press ok same message keeps coming if I press back following occurs.
2). The installation starts and asks for language and keyboard type. Then it asks me to specify the hard disk and then a message is displayed that it cannot find repository.

Sep 29, 2010My primary drive is 250GB and has the root, home and var (I'd read it's good to put var on a separate partition for MythTV which I'm planning on doing) on separate partitions. I have a second 1TB drive that I'll be using to backup the 250GB drive and also host less critical data. I've created two partitions on this drive, one 250GB and the other covering the rest of the drive. I'd like to move the Videos directory out of Home on the 250GB onto the 1TB drive but can't find a definitive way of doing this. Should I just follow this guide for moving the home folder to a new partition? Next question is when performing a backup of the 250GB drive how do I make sure it's going to the 250GB partition on the 1TB drive? Can the different partitions be mounted separately?

I'm limited to using my hard drive as there's no CD/DVD or floppy drives installed on the machine and BIOS does not support booting from USB.

From the terminal enter these commands
sudo mkdir /distro
sudo chmod `whoami`:`whoami`

title Install Linux

Creating the folder "distro" on root was easy and went smoothly. I can't seem to make the second 'whoami' command work, though. I copied-and-pasted "sudo chmod `whoami`:`whoami`" into the terminal. It asks me for the root password, I enter that and then get
chmod: missing operand after `holly:holly'
Try `chmod --help' for more information.
I didn't see anyone reply in the comments of that page saying they had trouble with it, so I think I'm just being an idiot. One person did suggest adding distro at the end on another page and it gets me

Aug 31, 2010I've recently installed openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME When I was working on desktop settings, it locked itself, and it doesn't accept password I set during installation. I know that password is right, because it worked in YaST.

Jul 16, 2010I learned a couple of days ago why you should do regular backups. Left my laptop working for the day in hot weather. When I came back it had crashed. On reboot it no longer booted up. I could still access the BIOS and boot from alternative media but not from the hard drive. The laptop tried to access the hard disk for a couple of minutes (hard drive light was blinking) and then failed. I made an ubuntu live usb stick and am currently working from there, trying to access my hard drive so I could image my data on another disk before sending the laptop for repairs. All my data is on that disk including my passwords and the password for this site conveniently so I had to register a new account to post this thread.
The laptop is IBM Thinkpad X41. The hard drive is accessed during when boot options are presented, again when the live cd boots up and determines the hardware available and also when manually probing for hard disks using the script below. The hard disk however does not show up in dev. If I could get so far to get it there, I could use dd_rescue to image it away. My hope lies in that the drive still spins up and is accessed producing error messages, however indicating that the system still knows it exists. Excerpt from dmesg concerning the drive:
