OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Opensuse Under Grub2 With Splash Background And Console Background?
Mar 24, 2010I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

May 27, 2010I'm trying to make a script run when x is started (to set the desktop background using xloadimage, run xcompmgr, and make one change with xmodmap [I suspect there is a better way to change this]). The wiki says (on the subject of .xinitrc) "If you want the script to be called when ever an X Session is started, then you should instead use ~/.xsession" I had no default ~/.xsession file. I believed that it would be checked for, so created a minimal file

and gave it executable permissions (744).
"allow-user-xsession" is present in /etc/X11/Xsession.options.
However, ~/.xsession does not run when x starts.
1) Should I be using something other than .xsession for this?
2) If not, how do I enable it? Or am I making some error that prevents it from running?

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Background Reset After Every Kernel Update
Nov 4, 2010This is just a nit, but I have noticed that whenever the kernel is updated, the background picture that I have set up for the login screen seems to be reset to "default_blue". No other setting seems to be disturbed.
After each update, I have to go into Configure Desktop->Login manager and set my background picture again. Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix this?
I am running Suse 11.3, KDE v4.4.4.

May 16, 2011Recently I did a kernel update (compiling it manually with help of SuSE Automatic Kernel Compiler). Everything works fine and I am happy with my own settings, however there is one thing that I would to enable. On the stock kernel there is a openSUSE bootsplash on startup and a nice looking openSUSE background image in console mode. On my newly compiled kernel there is no such a eyecandies. My question is: How to enable them on my own compiled 2.6.38 kernel?
P.S In the attachment you can see what i mean with that background image in console mode, so you get my point. This is the image found on the internet, my system is openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit)
OpenSUSE Install :: Lost GRUB Background Picture After Changing Menu.lst?
Jan 10, 2009I added an entry to grub's menu.lst and reran grub (grub-install hd0) and now my background is gone and the entries just show up like on a normal console.
I searched the forums and I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know why this happened and how to fix it?
I have not changed anything in menu.lst except for adding the new OS.

Dec 10, 2009I can configure my software's appearance? Well, for the KDM theme, the Grub Bootsplash, i can download themes people so generously create. I however, desire the BOOTSPLASH. or whatever it is, of openSUSE 11.1. the green with white veins in the background, and a strip of black running horizontally across, with "openSUSE" written on it in white. i mean the one that masks the initial Text interface, the FIRST GUI you see after GRUB. The one that also shows when you power down. Is this a plausible endevour? I do have my 11.1 iso, in case it's stored as a theme in there.

Dec 14, 2010I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
Networking :: Ubuntu Freezing When Network Manager Is Started.(11.04) / Fix It?
Jul 25, 2011Yesterday I had to use my netbooks Acer restore program to restore my win7 partition to factory settings. This morning when booting up unbuntu, I was greeted with the guild freezing every time. I also booted in classic and had the same problem. I decided to open safe mode and deactivate each program one at a time. WHen I get to network manager Unity boots fine. I then try to start Network Manager from inside of Unity after it boots and as soon as it boots, the entire computer freezes again, it was booting fine until I had to restore my win7 partition, win7 networks still work. It's and Asus Aspire One 722.

Sep 1, 2010My ubuntu system has been running really well until this morning - software update prompt appeared on the screen, so I ran with it and let it do its thing. A while after this, my WiFi network connection started failing. I've tried rebooting and then it can take up to five minutes or more for the password (keychain) prompt to appear. Once I have typed in the password the network connection starts to work. Then cuts out. Works. Then fails again.

The database have a scheduled job to fetch some files from another server using ftp, and herein lies the problem.he job runs a pl/sql that runs the function in an (by us compiled) external libraryThe ftp-functionality itself is done by using libncftp and it's API's.The process starts correctly, but then trying to login to the actual ftp host, ncftp only reports "Unknown username/password" (which is not the case).I have the exact same code in an executable and when run from an interactive shell, it works fine.So the only thing I can come up with, is there are differences when the process is started by Oracle, rather then being ordinary" process.And I am stuck.If there are any environment variables, paths etc missing when running the extproc-process, how do I find out which?Because the real problem is NOT wrong user or password.

According to what I've read, this requires rarpd and tftpd which I've set up on opensuse, but also bootparamd which I can't find for 11.3. It seems it was last included with opensuse 9.2. I first tried an upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4 and lost Internet Access, so i re-loaded 11.4 from scratch on clean partitions.
I am connected to my wireless WPA2/PSK connection, have an IP, am able to see the network.
I turned off and disabled the SUSE firewall.
I tried setting Firefox proxy settings to auto and to none, i dont use proxy.
I am currently posting this through an SSH connection to my 11.1 server from the new install of 11.4 on a Dell latitude D600 laptop (not using the on-board Broadcomm that is an issue for a later date).
I am running out of ideas anyone got a clue.
OpenSUSE Network :: 11.2 Install - When Exit YaST The Network Doest Show Up - No Icon In The System Tray And Doesn't Even Try To Connect
Jan 16, 2010I am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.

Feb 24, 2011Just installed 11.3 kde. When running the live cd both wireless and ethernet devices appeared in the network connections manager utility. I even connected to a wireless AP.I just booted up for the first time and none of these devices are available. There is no network manager icon in the system tray, and when the network manager utility is maually opened the only connection type i can select is vpn.I know that opensuse should be able to recognize these devices since they were available and working via the live cd, so can anyone help me restore them?
One extra piece of info, is that I am sharing a home directory with a gnome ubuntu install. there were a few minor issues i dealt with initially, but i didnt need to change this user's UID like I have had to do in the past so that's good. Each time i open a terminal I get two pieces of output assuming from the bash startup saying something like.URL...I highly doubt that these problems are related, but figured I'd post. Also if someone knows the solution to that as well, that would save me a bit of googling.
OpenSUSE :: Konqueror Started Again And Again - Multiple Times ?
Mar 14, 2010I have a strange effect here, where konqueror is started multiple times. It is no problem to start it from the K-Menu. But konqueror seems to be associated with different actions in applications, e.g. many "help" entries; among others e.g. Inkscape: "Hilfe/Inkscape Handbuch" (~ Help/Inkscape handbook") If I'm unfortunate enough to hit such an item, the konqueror items start flooding my task bar, while the mouse cursor - changed to the konqueror icon - is flickering like wild, while konqueror is starting again and again. None of the windows really open and all icons disappear after some time. (due to some resource overflow, but unfortunately I can't find the relevant log entry this time) How can I prevent this ? (Or debug this, if the cause is unclear)

Aug 22, 2010I just updated both my KDE 3.5.10 and KDE 4.5 today (OpenSuse 1.11). The problem that I have now is that the Plasma Desktop is loaded automatically after KDE 3.5 has started. So, depending on where I click or what I do, plasma and kdesktop fight for the control of my desktop.
I searched in every corners of my KDE 3.5 --and a bit in KDE 4 since somebody forced kdm4 on me-- but I haven't found who or what starts "plasma-desktop". Definitively not me! I can kill it safely but that's very irritating.
