My problem is when try to login Opensuse says Read only file system.(While booting a lot of things FAILS(written red) because of Read only file system). So i can't login.
Cause of this problem is want to reach my Opensuse filesystem from windows7.I installed Ext2fsd software to windows7.After installed software can see my opensuse filesystem.But it looks empty from windows7.So uninstalled the software.
After that day try to login my Opensuse.While booting alot of thing fails to load it says "FAILED".and when entered my password after entering my username cant login it says ..... Read Only File System.
How can i make the filesystem Read/write permissions to my opensuse operating system.

i've just installed the 11.3 while still keeping win 7. but i can't open the windows partition ,and even the massive usb storage device. i notice that by changing some syntax in the etc/fstba, i can make the system read the windows partition automatically once i start my PC. but how?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been having trouble copying files. When I try to copy something, it starts copying, and after a few GB, I suddenly get an error. It tells me its unable to write to the disk. After this, the only way to be able to write to the disk again, is to reboot the system. I then get to copy a few more files before the same error appears. The partition in question is formatted as ext3, using opensuse 11.0 with KDE.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've created a guest user in the group "user." I'd like to limit its read access to its own home directory. However, by navigating through File system>home it's able to read my home directory. I was under the impression that users were limited to their own home directories. Am I missing something, or is there a group I can assign this guest to, to limit its read access to its own home directory? I've read about Pessulus (I use Gnome), but that seems to be geared toward limiting access to applications, not directories.
Ideally, I'd like to create a group that cannot navigate through any files except its own home directory. But it seems that if I try to do that, the guest user will not be able to execute any applications. I've read all the posts (and other forums) I could find about creating such a limited account, but the chroot jail is beyond my understanding. I get the feeling that it's geared toward networks.
I have multi-version Kernels on a Dual Boot WinXP / openSUSE 11,3 box. It's been a LONG time since I needed to boot to Win XP and now that I find that I can't get to it, I can not say for sure what I did to break it. Looking back, I suspect that the method I used for the recent removal of one of the Kernel versions may have been innappropiate. Rather than unchecking in versions/package groups I may have just removed the unwanted kernel in the package list. Not sure. I've tried dinking around with menu.lst and Yast Boot Loader to no success. I get errors depending on what I messed with. Didn't try to reinstall grub until I checked here for help with a fix.

Somehow, the wife got her laptop into this situation yesterday. The Windows partition booted normally when selected from GRUB but os 11.3 would boot to a command line login and pretty much everything besides CTRL-D was useless as the root partition was ro.
I booted a live CD and found two a couple of strange things. First, the system clock was reset to the default date/time (2007-xx-xx). I reset that. Second, after correcting the time I ran fsck on the root and home partitions. Both went through with no errors reported but the 20GB root partition took a long,long time to complete while the 80GB home partition went pretty quickly. After doing the above, the system booted normally but both partitions reported running the transaction log as well as forcing fsck where I had just done that. My question is for future reference: how does the system react to a grossly incorrect date/time, especially where all the drive data reports being much later than the reported system time? Formated new drive with ext3 on external drive on Suse 11.1 When upgraded to 11.2, drive was not connected... Could not get mounted after that... Set up another boot drive, could not get to mount. Found post with following:

View 6 Replies View RelatedI had a working setup of opensuse 11.0, dual booting using grub installed on the home partition. I tried to install 11.3 from the coverdisc of linux format (LXFDVD136). It took 5 goes before the install succeeded. Mostly stopping at the "boot installed system" stage. I put 11.3 on a formatted partition in the same place as 11.0, and put grub there too.
The system will not boot without assistance. I have to use a supergrub disc and tell it which partition to boot. If I use boot linux from supergrub I get the Grub error message 15 file not found. Supergrub CAN find windows and it boots with the win command. Automatic and yast initiated attempts to check for software upgrades are blocked by the application with pid 4587.
When I want upgrade and/or install any package from software.opensuse.org I've got error, "Couldn't find XML file" or anything same this.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a VPS with SUSE 11 64-bit installed on it.This as it turns out is 11.1.On looking at the repository it has none listed, so getting updates is kinda hard. I added the 11.1 repository, or what I thought was it, but it tells me it can't update as it needs an x64 installation.I've tried changing the repositories to 11.2, but get the same message, that it needs an x64 installation.I'm aware it's best to upgrade with a fresh install off DVD, but this is something I can't do with a VPS.
1) Is it possible to upgrade to 11.2 or 11.3 from 11.1 .. I know it's not overly advised, but is there a way to do it?
2) What's the actual requirements for these or what repositories should I be pointing to? Because, I'm already on 64-bit, so I don't get why they wouldn't work.
3) Is there any issues with staying on 11.1? And if I do, then what repositories should I be using?
I have been using OpenSuse 10.3 for years. Now decided to upgrade to 11.3 (current latest).My current box connected and configured with so many peripherals and software:
1) DLink wireless router,
2) HP Printer (networked),
3) Cannon scanner through USB,
4) Zoiper VOIP telephony application,
5) etc. etc.
my question is whether it is recommended to upgrade straightforward from 10.3 to 11.3 ? Is there any known issues that I might be encountered after upgrade installation (e.g. loosing any previous data, configuration etc.).
With upgrade from 10.2 to 11.3. I burned the iso and chose upgrade option (because when I installed last time it didn't set up the boot management properly to boot into winxp, so I eventually had to reinstall windows).
Upgrade seemed to work ok, but when it first booted it couldn't load the filesystems properly. I mostly fixed this by editing fstab. Now it boots fully into runlevel 5 and congratualtes me, but I'm left at the command line with no GUI (i use Gnome).
I'm currently running opensuse 11.3 with Gnome and I downloaded the 11.4 iso yesterday and was considering doing an over-the-top upgrade. But I've been browsing through the forums and it looks like a lot of people have been having issues with 11.4.
So what is the general consensus on 11.4 so far? Is it recommended to stay with 11.3? If I do try to upgrade, what types of "gotcha's" am I likely to experience.
And since 11.4 comes with LibraOffice but 11.3 has OpenOffice, will it automatically remove the old and install the new or should I manuualy uninstall OO first?
