OpenSUSE Install :: It Just Keeps On Demanding My Password

Aug 27, 2010

I quite like Open Suse, which I installed to replace Ubuntu after the latest version failed to connect to the internet. BUT, Open Suse has a dreadful drawback for me. I only have to leave the laptop unattended for a couple of minutes and the screen goes blank, and when I try to revive it, it requires my password. I have tried using power management, setting everything to "never", but I still get the regular black screen followed by the password screen.

Ubuntu :: Demanding Password On Start-up?

Jun 6, 2010

I'd like to password protect the startup of my computer.

My computer has 1 user log-in. I'd like to keep it that way but simply make the computer ask for password before loading into the desktop.

If I go: System > Administration > Users and Groups.... I click on my username, and there is a check box that says "Don't ask for password on login". For some reason, this message and box is grayed out and unavailable for changing.

For some reason, CUPS is demanding a username and password.I know there's a way to manually edit the cupsd file, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for in it to shut off the dialog, so I can just go in and add a printer. Anybody else had this problem? I tried using a text browser, and ran into the same problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Root Password During After Install?

Apr 5, 2011

have managed to lock myself out of my root account...I just installed openSUSE 11.4, and during the install, I set the root password to be different then my regular user password. Both passwords I've used for a while and know backwards and forwards so it's not a case of simply forgetting a new password. The thing is, I managed to mis-type the root password wrong 2x in a row. I have tried all my passwords numerous times, with and without caps lock, I've tried su -, sudo and logging in directly as root. All to no avail. It always returns authentication failure.I know this is a worst case senario and am expecting that the easiest way to fix is just to reinstall (Not a big issue since I just installed) but I figured I would ask if anyone had a good way to fix this

OpenSUSE Install :: Change Password Just For Sudo?

Apr 6, 2010

I'm using Debian and openSUSE 11.2 and the sudo-ing is a bit different in Debian. It actually makes more sense to enter your own password like in Debian to achieve sudo status than have to use the root password for sudo status. If I for example would like to give someone on my system sudo rights, I can't give them the root password. Thats just like giving them root access. Or is there a way to change that behavior, or just change sudo password, in openSUSE? Or maybe any other best practice for giving users sudo rights?

OpenSUSE Install :: 1.3 Splashscreen Won't Accept Password?

Jan 3, 2011

I'm running 64-bit 11.3 on a Dell 1535 laptop. At lunch today, the system booted-up as normal, then shut-down as normal. A handful of updates were installedduring that time. This evening, however, I arrive at the password splash screen, enter my password, and then the system churns a few seconds before resetting the splash screen. No error message, no "wrong password," just a normal splash screen. I tried going into Xen, the default 11.3 and failsafe -- same thing happened with each. When I navigated to the command line, my password worked fine, both for user and super-user.

OpenSUSE Install :: Password On The Grub Bootloader On 11.2 Box?

I'm trying to install a password on the Grub bootloader on my 11.2 box. I ran yast2 bootloader then clicked on bootloader options, then the checkbox for using a password, and then typed in my password twice. It isn't working. I've tried various different passwords to see if something was throwing it off like special characters or too many characters but no matter what I do I can't use the password to unlock the bootloader on bootup. It just tells me that I entered the incorrect password.

OpenSUSE Install :: Changing Password User That Is Not Logged In?

Apr 15, 2010

I'm looking for a user-friendly way to change the password of a user that is *not* currently logged into the machine. We have a machine that is used by a number of users with a low level of tech savvy. The machine gets logged in as a generic user which works for most purposes, but due to a management requirement, we need Firefox to be run under an account set up for the individual user. I've gotten that bit to work fine, but what I can't figure out is a friendly (GUI) way to allow users to change their own password while the machine is logged in as the generic user. I would like to use gnome-passwd, but I've been unable to figure out how to get it to run for a user other than the logged-in generic user.

OpenSUSE Install :: Shutting Down Requires Root Password?

Apr 29, 2010

'm running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 4.4.2.

Since i installed KDE 4.* Whenever I go to shutdown, I get the shutdown dialogue, I hit shutdown, it logs me off, shows some text on shutdown screen, and then opens up the GUI again, bringing up a small window, where It asks for the root password, in order to shutdown. If i don't give it the root password, it goes to the login screen.

I cannot, any way, command line, GUI, or anything, shutdown without providing a root password.

If I use the command shutdown now, as root, it logs me off and goes through an endless cycle of logging off, and then asking for root to shut down, and not shutting down (All on the CLI), and everytime i give it the password, it cancels shutdown and goes back to the prompt. I eventually have to pull the battery to kill it in that case..

I have tried chmoding the shutdown scripts to make it work, it doesn't.

Is there any way to automate the trial of different passwords? I remember the basic structure of what the password was so if somehow I could automate trying passwords from a list I may have a good change to recover my volume.

If/when I do remember the password. Is there a way to change the password on an encrypted volume? I need to make it something I will remember for sure... or write it down somewhere safe..
