I installed openSUSE on a XP runnng computer and every thing is OK.When I tried to Install a new XP, I got this error:Code:Invalid Partition Table I fixed it by reinstalling GRUB using Rescue System.I tried fix mbr on XP Repair System and I got that error again.Now I want to keep XP and remove openSUSE. But computer only boots by GRUB and XP's boot loader is unable to boot and shows that error

I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.

I have a laptop with dual boot system, opensuse 11.2 and windows xp in the same hard disk.
I tried to remove suse doing the following :
Ι loaded windows xp cd and get in recovery console. After that i did Fixmbr and fixboot.
After that, after the bios screen, i get a black sceen with the message "invalid partition table"
If i type a "dir" command i can see my files, so the disks partiotions are not corrupted i guess. Just the MBR is damaged.
I installed Ubuntu as shown in the wiki and when I went to restart it gave me a lovely blinking cursor and nothing else. So I held down option, loaded into osx, reinstalled rEFIt and got my menu on startup. Unfortunately, the partition sync tool doesn't seam to be working, it gives me an error: Status: MBR partition table is invalid, partitions overlap. Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was reading another thread about someone with a bad partition table and I decided to join this forum. I'm not going to take any drastic actions with the partition (/dev/sda3) in question. I am going to wait for instructions on what to do first. I am not very good with Linux and need some hand holding. System: DELL 4550 Dual-Booted with XP and Ubuntu. Works OK, just no swap. Well, here's what I did: I deleted a partition for Windows XP Pro because it was a trial, and it ran out. I then decided to slide the swap partition for the Ubuntu Linux that I dual-boot into over. (If this was successful, I was going to try expanding the root partition to take up the unused space.) I used Gparted on a CD to do this, as I figured it was safe to do.
I now cannot mount the swap space at bootup (and have to go into a backup version of the OS), although I can use Gparted in Linux to execute the "swapon" command, and it appears that it worked because I now see "swapoff" as an option on the context menu. (I actually don't even need a swap partition, except to hibernate.) If I highlight the swap partition and click on "Drive" on Gparted's menu bar and select "Create Partition Table", it will erase all data on /dev/sda, so how do I fix the bad partition table non-destructively?
I'm trying to clone a Linux install to a different laptop. It's made a little complicated by two facts:
1) The 'new' laptop I'm trying to copy my Linux installation to is actually older and has a smaller hard drive then the computer I'm copying from
2) The computer I'm copying from has both a windows and Linux installation; I only care about the Linux partition.
I figured I would copy only the Linux partition from my primary computer to the laptop, sense the laptop doesn't have a large enough hard drive to copy everything. So I used the DD commands to copy SDA3 (main Linux partition) from my main computer to SDA2 of my laptop. When I came back a few hours later I was surprise to find my laptop trying to reboot itself (I never turned it off). It would keep starting to reboot, failing, and restarting itself. Not too surprising sense its boot partition wasn't changed so it's trying to boot into centos when I copied a redhat partition to it.
The problem is that when I used a redhat boot disk the rescue mode was unable to find a Linux partition to mount. /dev/sda2 exists, but trying to mount it gets the complaint "No such file or directory". "fdisk -l" lists sda1 (the boot sector) and sda2. Sda2 is the correct size and reports Linux LVM for its system. But "fdisk -l /dev/sda2" gives the error message "Disk /dev/sda2 doesn't contain a valid partition table" Did I not clone the drive correctly, or was an error caused due to the boot sector not being copied yet (the laptops boot sector is smaller then my old computers, so I can't copy from old computer to laptop)? Can I salvage the laptops partition table somehow, or do I have to repeat the cloning process? And if I do have to re-clone my computer can anyone tell me what I did wrong the first time so it works this time? I don't care if I copy just the Linux partition or both windows and Linux. Even though my main computer has a larger hard drive I'm only using about half of its available space so it should be possible to copy both partitions if I could ignore the unused sections of the harddrive.
Edit: I used DD to copy a tiny part of the Linux partition from my laptop so I could look at it. Most of it is illegible binary of course, but I scrolled through till I found some text right near the beginning:

So it seems that the DD command did copy everything over to the laptop, which is good to know. I noticed that it says device="/dev/sda3" right in the middle of the code I just posted. The Linux section of my original computer was SDA3 but I copied it to partition SDA2 of my laptop. So is the problem because the boot partition is for the wrong device? I don't suppose if I modified that one line to say SDA2 it would be able to load correctly? (Not that I know how I would modify the line, short of using the DD command again).
I have had a problem whilst trying to rewrite the MBR on a NTFS-only harddisk which has one partition.
I'm wondering if I can do anything to fix the problem from my ubuntu CD which gives me access to a shell - using the trial/demo mode.
The problem is that I can't boot into WinXP since using the XP boot cd to go into recovery mode and typing in 'fixmbr DeviceHarddisk0Partition1'.
All I get is the message code...
Thought perhaps there may be a way to restore the missing signature or something, from ubuntu.
I have just installed the newest Debian Stable 7.8 release on my new notebook. Before installation I had to free some disk space from the preinstalled Windows7 with ntfsresize and fdisk. In addition to the existing three primary partitions I created an extended one with three logical partitions for /(root) /home and swap, see the output of 'fdisk -lu'

For some reason I put a bootable flag on sda7, and the only small concern during installation was that some BIOS systems might not work with boot-flag no logical drives. Now, every time I boot I get this "Invalid partition table!' message which I must 'enter" away before I get to the GRUB menu.
I had a RAID controller in a system that would not load Virtuozzo. So I deleted the array created by the 3Ware 9550SX controller before removing it and one drive from the CentOS 4.8 server. Even though I deleted the array when the server boots it shows an error:
ERROR : asr : invalid RAID config table
How can I clear and remove the table without having to reload the OS? Can I? Di I need to run the Seagate Tools and reset the drive?
As soon as I install and reboot OpenSUSE, my partition table gets lost somehow. Here is some information about my system:
Dual-booting system with Vista and OpenSUSE 2 SATA hard drives combined into one with Vista installed on them. 1 IDE hard drive with OpenSUSE installed on it.
When I install OpenSUSE, it loads fine right after the installation. Then, when I reboot the computer and select to load OpenSUSE from the Grub loader menu, it hangs right after:

I tried running System Repair off of a DVD and automated test - it tells me that the partition table is lost. I choose to recover partition table and after a while it does but I am still unable to boot.
Is there a difference between using GPT partition table when formating hard drives and MS-DOS partition table? What are the advantages/disadvantages of using either?

I have a problem with loading the powersaving kernel module p4-clockmod.ko. When I try inserting the module (via modprobe or insmod) I get FATAL: Error inserting p4_clockmod (/lib/modules/2.6.31.8-mediaserver/extra/p4-clockmod.ko): Invalid module format The module has been compiled together with the kernel. Other modules load with no problem at all. I've tried recompiling the kernel (after re-installing the sources, make xconfig from scratch) - no avail. There's only one kernel source package installed. Searching the forum and google didn't yield a helping answer.

I need to copy partition table for sda, I have 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition on sda. I understand that fdisk cant copy extended partition table and I need to use sfdisk.
Correct me if I am wrong -
1. For primary partitions

Where it will store the files after backing them up. I tried SUSE 11.2 DVD, it has back up partition table utility under repairs-advanced options but it suggests saving partition table to floppy. Why it doesnt offer to save it on a removable medium or to CD.
i used to have ubuntu 9.i decided to move to sabayon so i used the live cd to install it ,resize the ubuntu partition and use the remaining space for sabayon.while the resizing procedure i got an error(i dont have a copy of the error log file but i know it has something to do with an anaconda process).i aborted the installation and the result was an filesystem that couldnt be mounted.when i try to mount the hdd i get this:

I was trying to perform a new install, so sensibly made a back-up of my data to my external drive. Unsensibly, I didn't unplug the disc before starting the install and the install trashed the partition table/FAT on the external drive.I've used disktree and can "see" that the disk has lots on it, but I cannot access it.

I updated fedora as well as installing gparted.y hard disc containing my operating systems is not being read by gparted.unalloacted partition table. Also i am not able to mount a ntfs parition on the same hard disc.I did create the partition table on all hard discs with gparted livAnybody else had this problem? A kernel crash is also reported.DIT:I booted ubuntu 10.04 and opened gparted v5.1 without any problem. I booted fedora 13 again and now gparted 5.2
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have never seen this before wit any previous versions of ubuntu - wondering if anyone else has seen it or can explain it. The break down of the partition table is being viewed with Ranish Partition v2.43 It's old program, but it has been really handy.
What is happening is: Prior to the install of ubuntu on the 3rd Primary partition, you'll see that the 4th partition (which has a couple of logical partitions in it) starts at: (14,380 - 0 - 1) ===> Cylinder - Head - Sector After the installation of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS it shows a Non-conventional start point of: (14,380 - 0 - 62) =====> Cylinder - Head - Sector. An unused is left between the 3rd and 4th Primary partition.
This is not a big deal - just unusual (IMO) With the same partition layout (pre install) It doesn't matter if I install ubuntu on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd primary partition. The 4th one ALWAYS gets changed this way.
When I boot from my new Fedora15 LiveCD I get this on startup:

Pointer to BIT loadval table invalid. Everything appears to be working pretty normally other than the fact that the error came up on the screen. Is this going to be a major problem? Is there some kind of fix or patch that I can apply?
Purpose: Python, PHP, WebKit (hopefully), and pyqt development. There is Wubi for Ubuntu, which I am using right now. But Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't work well with my system. There is a Wubi like installer for Puppy Linux. There is Debian Win32 installer, but I think that does touch the partition table. My last option is to simply grab Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and hope it works. Would that be a viable solution considering my needs?
View 5 Replies View RelatedUsing ubuntu minimal install 9.10 for a htpc. My boot drive is a 2Gb disk on module. When using advanced install I am eventually given the option to format the drive and ultimately the option to pick what sort of partition table type. I am not sure what to pick; it appears to have msdos as a default. Here are my options:
aix
amiga
bsd
dvh
gpt
mac
msdos (default?)
pc98
sun
loop
Some appear to be obviously bad choices; but I am not sure. Any ideas on which would be a better pick for me? I have already used msdos and it seems to work fine.

my desktop has two hdd(sda+sdb recognized as (hd1)and (hd0)respectively..)sda has vista on it. sda is comprised of several simple volumes which vista calls dynamic ntfs..sdb has four primary partitions: sdb1; sdb5,sdb6, sdb7. sdb5,6,7 are extended partitions,together put as sdb2.
sdb5 for swap, sdb6 for (/)(does this mean root partition? but /root and /home are on the same level..), sdb7 for /home; this is suse 11.0.I delete the last simple volume of sda, and divided it into three partitions: sda8,9,10. sda8 for swap, 9 formatted as ext3 for /home, 10 formatted as ext4 for /.And I want to keep the current grub, so I chose the boot loader location to "Boot from Root Partition" in Boot Loader Settings. At the last minute of installtion, a dialog tells me:

(hd1,9) is surely sda10 which is mounted to '/'. why would grub not recognize this partition?
This error message always shows up whenever I boot to "rescue installed system" from dvd and try to reinstall grub to root partition, ie. (hd1,9). I tried to put one entry in the menu.lst of suse 11.0 :

But instead of boot into 11.2, it gives me a message "No such a partition"Until now the only successful boot into suse is through the dvd rescue mode-> boot into installed systems. later tries all failed.. with a message "modprobe: FATAL: Could not open.ko", the screen freezed, number led indicator and caps lock led both flashing on and off. I had to press the RESET on the box..
the good thing is suse 11.0 is still bootable, the current grub not crumbled..but the strange is grub cannot be installed. maybe it's due to ext4 format? In 11.0 if I try to mount /dev/sda10 to /mnt, it would say unknown file system 'ext4'.
I'm a Windows 7 user attempting to install openSUSE in a partition on a separate hard disk, and am receiving grub error 17 on install. My windows partition is sdb1, and my (hopeful) openSUSE partition is sdc2. When I attempt to redefine the grub config after receiving the error message, there are no mounted drives in my "/dev/" folder to point to, nor can I find the kernel image or RAM disk in my "/boot/" folder.
