OpenSUSE Install :: Install Stalls At Cycling Screen?

I have installed successfully a couple of times... But not today! I have a Gateway Solo 5300 384 MB RAM.penSUSE 11.1 on CD. When I attempt an install it seems to be successful (I watch the logging) then it comes to what I presume is the enter your options screen and the video scrambles. Then it cycles through what seems to be 3 scrambled screens. The first screen is always the same, the second screen is different each time

I have installed OpenSuse 11.4 as a Xen guest on a host system running SLES11 and it gets stuck just as it reaches run level 3. I can ping it and various network ports are open but the virtual text console is unresponsive and I cannot ssh to the machine. Port 10080 (Amanda backup) is also open but not functioning properly. The odd thing is that this problem happened when I first installed the guest and then went away only to reappear when I rebooted after installing the latest kernel via Online Update.

Since update yesterday to kde4.3.5 I notice this am - after logging in with password the loading desktop stalls. In cat /var/log/messages I grabbed part that seems possible.

I am trying to install the PPC kernel on an iBook G3. The CDs boot up, however both the net-install and the regular install cd both freeze up after it looks for harddisks. The screen is blue. The box title says
"Loading additional components"
"0%"
"Retrieving lvm2-udeb"
I have no clue what to do. I am trying to get an error readout, but nothing but the power button works. It shuts it off. I check the system clock and it was wrong, but I got it set to the correct time. I don't have and OSX disks. I am wanting a full Linux HD. Please let me know how to trouble shoot. (I have seen that many people have no problem installing this on there macs. The os is still working on the os side, but I want to switch it to Linux.)

Total noob here. I am trying to install Mythbuntu 10.10 on a computer with and empty hard drive using a CD.The install start fine, I make a couple of selections to tell the installer I want to use the entire harddrive, select the timezone and the install starts without any problems. Unfortunatly after about 30min or so, the installation seem to be stalled out with the progress bar at the 85-90% range. There are no obvious errors in the log.
I have successing installed Ubuntu in the past (although not on this hardware). The PC includes an IDE based DVD-R, 120Gb sata based ssd, 939 dual core processor. 8600GT video card. 2Gb memory. One possibility is that I don't have a TV tuner card installed yet. Was going to do that after I got Ubuntu up and running but perhaps the installer is looking for a tuner card. I realize I am not giving anyone much to work but I am not sure what I could post.

I ordered a SuSE 11.4 installation DVD from an online Linux Distro distributer that I've used before with no problems. I did this rather than burn my own DVD from the website. I thought that I might perform a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 on this Dell 1420 Laptop that is currently running Ubuntu 11.04.
Note, this is a completely fresh install, not a side-by-side installation with Ubuntu; I followed the installation sequence that completely repartitions the entire disk for SuSE, and accepted all of the suggested options regarding logon, etc.
Everything goes well ... sort of. The first install didn't reboot correctly, i.e., the set-up that is supposed to run after the initial install never happened and I had to manually power-down the machine and restart from the "safe mode." Needless to say, that didn't work as expected. So, I re-install, from scratch, trying different options: for instance, instead of LVM, I decide to have an un-encrypted partition scheme and accept the "obvious" options ... thinking that the LVM options interacted badly with the install. Eventually I get the installation to proceed correctly, or so it appears: it goes though the entire sequence, including the re-boot, building the default image, etc.
I test this image by removing the DVD, power-cycling the machine, and all looks good, so I begin the process of installing software updates, etc. Being paranoid, I re-boot the machine, and all restarts correctly, etc.
Now here's the annoying thing. The next day, I power the machine on, and it locks at the splash screen. By the way, these are the exact symptoms that I experienced with the bogus/incomplete installations. The boot sequence proceeds up to the splash screen and waits forever.
So, in sum: I spent inordinate amounts of time attempting to install this software, carefully following the instructions provided by the installer. In every instance, after leaving the machine off for a day or so and rebooting, I am met with a splash screen that sits forever. Needless to say, I am extremely reluctant to repeat another day of software installation to only have to re-start with no assurances of success. Either I go back to ugly Ubuntu (which has always worked out of the box, by the way), or I look at other options. I was hoping to use SuSE, but I really don't care which distro is on that machine as long as it works and it provides TeX, R, Emacs, Scheme, and a few other software packages that I'm sure are of no interest to your customer base.

Did a clean install with 11.2 after being very impressed with the LiveCD. After installation process finished, laptop booted up and I had a green screen, no icons and a mouse cursor. REALLY liked the way the OS performed on the LIVECD and would like to give it a real shot.I can install Fedora 11, Ubuntu, Madriva and Mint Linux with no problem on the same Toshiba laptop.

I move from Win to SUSE. I install Suse 11 on notebook with pluged extern monitor, but when i un-plug this monitor then no screen is visible - only black screen. In "failsave" it works but in normal ee :-(and I tryed clone screen- nothing) SUSE detect only ext monitor. Manual settings of resolution is not working.

I recently tried to upgrade my openSuSe 11.1 system using the instructions at:

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?

I got my hands recently on openSUSE 10.2 (ppc) to put on my b&w powermac g3. i can boot from the cd and it gives me a text prompt and the choices install, rescue, and something to do with the network (which is whatever), and a not-very-helpful help option. so i type install, and my monitor says "input not supported." i figure, "ok, that's cool, i'll just plug in one of my old crt monitors 'cause it must be trying to use a resolution lower than my fancy-schmancy one supports." plug in the old one, restart, type "install," same thing. i'm not new to linux, but i don't really have any options with this prompt that any manner of googling or thread-hunting can uncover which allows me to specify the resolution at which the yast installer starts (or refresh rate, maybe that's it...) or lets me keep it in text mode through the installation. I tried typing "install textmode=1" which seems to do nothing special (same result as just "install") and just "textmode=1" (which is a fundamentally retarded approach, but what else am i supposed to do?). Once the operating system is installed and i can boot into a terminal, i figure can edit the xorg.config to use the resolution i want, but i can't very well install the system without seeing what i'm doing! It's just confusing 'cause it doesn't seem to like any display i give it.

I just installed 11.4 with KDE on a COMPAQ EVO D510 SFF. The install seemed to go smoothly but after the boot completes I have only a white cursor on a black screen. The cursor moves with the mouse.At the boot menu, I can select alternatively "failsafe" and that takes me (after login) to the Linux command line and I don't know how to work that very well

Got a problem when trying to run the KDE-LiveCD (and install). It boots just fine but when X starts (or whatever it is) I get a scrambled screen (image below). I've tried to boot with all kinds of different settings. VESA, Safe settings, ACPI OFF. etc. it just doesn't work. (text mode works fine)
I've had this problem on other distros as well. Some distros work (fedora 11 for example), others don't. This problem started maybe 1-2 years ago.
dmesg shows nothing special (what it looks like to me)
my system:
AMD 64 2000+
Nvidia GeForce 7600 (AGP)
1.5GB RAM
MB Asus K8N

I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

I installed opensuse11.4 few minutes back. The install was absolutely smooth. I have dual boot, Win Xp and 11.4 now. But for some reason I do not see the login screen but instead I see a green screen with squares and stripes. Login in the failsafe mode is successful. How do I fix it?
Also noticed the following,
1) Initially the splash screen picks up the right resolution 1024*768 and then it changes it to a higher resolution. This I think I can fix, because I had faced a similar problem with 11.3 as well.
Graphics Card: GeForce 7025/ nForce 630a.

I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

Yesterday, I included the GNOME 3 repository and I upgraded to GNOME 3 only to find out that my ASUS N61JV-X2 notebook PC cannot work with GNOME 3 because I use the nouveau graphics driver instead of the nVIDIA binary Linux driver. I have nVIDIA Optimus technology installed on my laptop which means that there is no official support from nVIDIA. So, I removed the GNOME 3 repository and I reinstalled GNOME 2.32. I also installed KDE 4.6.2.
When I boot my computer, I cannot get to the GDM screen that allows me to select my user profile and enter my password. I get a screen that says openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64) and linux-21rs.site.What happened?How do I solve this problem so that I can login to my computer as I did beforehand?I am able to do a CTRL+ALT+F2 to get to a TTY console and login from there so I can follow the steps to solve this problem from the BASH console.Please include detailed step by step instructions so that I can login into my computer as I did so before I did what I did yesterday. I have a class tonight at NJIT and there is a quiz in my class so I need my laptop to work as soon as possible because I have a digital textbook that requires me to run Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32 bit to read my notes in the chapter.

when I try to startup the xserver in normal mode iget a message "Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 giving up. xinit: Resource temporaily unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error."
I dont know what this means except that something does not work.

I've got a problem with my openSuse 11.3 for a few days. This is my first Linux so i'm kind of rookie.OK, let's start.I installed it something like 1 month ago and everything looks good until now. When I turn on my PC and try to login (deskop mode) login bar goes from 30% to 50% and then appears a black screen, nothing more, just deep black (cannot type anything etc.) I use GRUB - Windows, opensuse deskop mode and failsafe mode. Failsafe mode works good, but I have no idea what should I do because I didn't change anything. I even done a reinstall of OpenSuse and after one day I've got the same black screen.Someting wrong with grapfic card drivers? (ati 4850, downloaded from ati page, works good for 1 month) maybe some kind of new update which was installed automatically?

I use KDE with Compiz and Emerald.I just installed the Enlightenment window manager. The only way I seem to be able to choose it is by logging out of my KDE session and getting to that login screen and choosing from the list....then logging in again.Where do I change the setting so that the login screen comes up every time I boot up?

I am trying to install the latest openSUSE 11.1 64-bit using an installation DVD downloaded.
I have my boot order set up so that the computer tries to boot from the CD/DVD drive first.
When I restart, I get the following:
0: NO emulation system type 00
1: NO emulation system type 00
Enter a choice:
Regardless of whether I enter 0 or 1, the system boots into the regular Windows vista.
Here are my system details:
Laptop: HP Pavilion dv4t-1300 Entertainment PC.
Processor: Intel Core2Duo.
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
Memory: 4 GB
It's a new computer with a recovery partition of 13 or so GB and a single partition of (250GB - 13 or so GB). I want to use the openSUSE re-partitioning system during the install.
I did search for this problem. Even though I found some similar problems, I couldn't find anything where, a person couldn't get to the boot screen at all.

I want to have numlock always on in the log-in screen, but I can't get it to work - I always have to activate it manually. I've tried out System Settings > Keyboard > Numlock > Turn on both as normal user and as root, but it simply doesn't work. I'm using openSuse 11.2 x64 w/ Kde 4.3.4 (updated from 4.3.1 w/ Kde repositories).

I'm running openSUSE 11.2 on a Thinkpad T61p with nvidia graphics. I'm running the proprietary nvidia driver.The battery ran very low and the computer suspended itself. After I woke it up, the desktop is completely black.After troubleshooting as much as I could, I did ctrl-alt-backspace, which brought me to a normal (non-black) login screen. However, as soon as I logged in, I was back to a completely black screen. But the system is operating.I rebooted the computer (warm reboot as well as cold restart) and each time the video is normal until I get to the desktop and all I get it black.Everything was normal until the pm suspend.Suspend has never worked exactly right, so I don't normally use it. But in this case, it used itself Next step: I logged in to console mode and looked at the logs. The only messages of interest seem to be in Xorg.0.log I found a couple error messages that might be of interest:

I am installing 11.2 on an older machine, Athlon 2800+, GeForce 6800, 1 GB RAM. Install goes fine until try to reboot to the OS and just get massive garbage on the screen. Can't see anything just lines crossing the screen, it seems almost like the resolution is way off but don't know how to change that since I can't see anything. I tried two different install disks to make sure not the problem and got the same thing with both. I tried installing both KDE and GNOME on separate occasions and still same problem. I have used the same install disk to put this on an even older machine and that went fine. I do have windows 7 installed on another partition. I'm fairly new to linux but I'm learning.
