Ubuntu Installation :: Install From A Working Live Cd But Got Medium Not Found Error

Feb 23, 2011

heres what happenned:

1. had working xp install on 320 gb hard disk with only one partition.
2. backed up and used easeus to shrink and create new partition on same hard drive.
3. tried to install from a working live cd but got medium not found error.
4. looked for fix but didnt find it so i used wubi to install it to the partition i created.
5. worked but annoyingly slow so looked for guide to switch from wubi to full install.
6. followed guide and it installed to a new partition i made with gparted and it formatted that one to ext4 but i still had the wubi install which i didnt want. (btw, non-wubi is much > wubi install).
7. went to xp to uninstall wubi, delete wubi partition, and grow full ubuntu install partition with easeus. easeus requires reboot.

8. restart comp to find an error that said no partition found and something else about grub rescue.
9. try live cds but hard drive not detected and tried win7 and xp but they didnt even get into setup
10. make plan: get bro to format my hardd disk using his compyter so i csn try ubuntu onw more time

i got a bunch of different types of errors but im really close to giving up on it entirely.

Fedora Installation :: Updates After Install And Repo Lists / Saying Repo Not Found?

Mar 26, 2011

i'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.

ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83

1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?

2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.

3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.

4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.

OpenSUSE Install :: Black Screen With Error 15: File Not Found

Oct 8, 2010

I managed to get following config up and running very nicely with an 11.3 installation. But recently I did a clean install of the OS and hoping to preserve my data in the home HD (2TB) partition I did the following operation which resulted in black screen screen with error 15: file not found.

Config: one SSD root (90GB) and swap (30Gb) second HD for home (2TB)

During the installation I reformatted and mounted the SSD with root and swap as above. I left the home HD (2TB) unformatted and mounted as home.

When I did my first boot up, it worked perfectly - Even Fire Fox booted up with my recovered pages as of my last install! However after installing my multi-media codecs, and security updates, etc. to the fresh install I rebooted the system only to discover that I am unable to get past GRUB!

I don't have to lose my data every time I do a fresh install to new ISO release.

OpenSUSE Install :: Windows Disabled My Partition - Error 15 File Not Found

Sep 10, 2009

Getting back my OpenSuse OS/partition.

Background: I had a dual boot system, Win XP followed by OpenSuse 11.1 install. I tweaked it a lot to get my wireless card and Nividia card working. Finally got it to a stage where it was working great.

What happened: For some reasons windows XP had some issues and I had to reinstall the OS. Since I have the openSuse install DVD lying around I took the bold step of reinstalling windows knowing that it will blow away the Grub from MBR. However, during the windows setup, the setup said something about setting the Linux partition as inactive (I think so). Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact message.

After finishing the XP install, I booted in with the XP Cd and tried the repair option to repair the MBR. That really messed up the MBR. So much so that booting back with XP boot CD and running fixmbr didn't work. Finally reinstalled windows again.

Now I am not sure what should I do next.

I tried using the superGrubDisk but it gives the following error: Error 15 File not found.

OpenSUSE Install :: Error 15 - File Not Found After Update 11.3 On A Dual-boot PC With Ubuntu 9.10

Oct 22, 2010

Recently I've installed Open Suse 11.3 along with Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC ( made it a dual-boot OS ). This morning while logged in, in Open Suse 11.3, found out that there were important update for kernel in Yast. So, did the update and then required to restart the PC. In the Grub/boot menu, I chose to log-in to Open Suse 11.3, but after a while it returned with " Error 15, file not found ". Luckily I was able to log-in in Ubuntu 9.10. Assumed that Error 15 is always related to misplaced or wrong configuration of Grub in the partition, I did several searching via Google, and found this possible solution HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive . So I tried the " Broken Grub menu: boot to the menu, drop to a console and boot openSUSE direct " method. But rightly after the " find /boot/grub/menu.lst " command as instructed in the solution, it returned with ( hd0,0 ) and ( hd0,4 ). Why there are 2 bootloader in the Grub ? Which bootloader should I choose ? And for convenience, here is my " menu.lst " folder that I get via Terminal in Ubuntu 9.10 :

$ cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
# grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),

OpenSUSE Install :: Mednafen - Configure: Error: *** OpenGL Header File Not Found

[Code]...

configure: error: *** OpenGL header file not found! I've seen references in a few places that these type ("Present But Cannot Be Compiled") can usually be ignored, but in this case ./configure fails and I can't make. I am unsure why this is, as I've installed mednafen on Suse 11.4 before and it runs fine. I've tried installing various OpenGL-related packages that I can find (Mesa, freeglut, glib, etc) but nothing seems to solve the problem

OpenSUSE Install :: "Error 15: File Not Found" On Login

Apr 30, 2010

I ran a full package upgrade and then a distribution upgrade yesterday on a Suse 10 system to bring it up to date. I think it worked out fine, except the boot loader (Grub) reports error 15: file not found on attempted boot.

In the other example, the boot loader was configured to look for the now non-existent kernel and i imagine mine is doing the same: the last example was fixed with a live disc that i dont have any more, and i cant make one because i dont have access to a dvd burner.

My question is this: how do I find what version of the kernel I'm using, and how do I configure the Grub boot loader so it'll work as desired? I've been trying every possible option for hours and hours and I really can't afford to lose my information on there.

Fedora Installation :: Could Not Retrieve File From DVD - No Repo Found

Jul 26, 2011

I have been trying now for 3 days to install Fedora 15 on my computer. I have Windows 7 installed and have created a free partition for this install. When I am installing I get to the repository selection part and I get only 3 options (Fedora 15, Fedora 15 Testing, Fedora 15 Updates), by default the Fedora 15 and Fedora 15 Updates are selected. There is no option for DVD Repository and if I click add repository and select DVD it says no repository found. Furthermore, if I proceed with the 2 default repositories checked off it takes about 8 hours to download everything online and then towards the end it says it couldn't retrieve a file and exit installation. How to use the DVD to get all the packages so that my install doesn't keep taking 8 hours to fail?

This is the 64bit version I am trying to install, system specs:
Intel Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz
16.0 GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
1 TB Harddrive
The original DVD I got from the direct download. I also downloaded via torrent to see if that worked and got the same results.

For some reason I was trialing a SUSE 11.1 SP1 version for a while and somehow I have NO clue it attempted to change itself to a OpenSUSE 11.1 System. I have no clue what I did, please don't ask Now though I have been successful in turning into an OpenSUSE 11.2 system by changing the repositories to OpenSUSE 11.2, doing a "zypper refresh", "Zypper in Zypper", "Zypper dup -d", "Zypper dup". I also did a repair and refreshed the base packages with an OpenSUSE 11.2 DVD and that seemed to help also. CentOS 5 :: Error 15 - File Not Found After Fresh Install Of 5.3 With LVM

Oct 19, 2009

I have just done a reinstall of Centos 5.3 on a dedicated server (via a KVM). My partition arrangement was the default presented to me by the installer:

As you can see, I'm using LVM for everything other than /boot (I need to use LVM for an app I am testing).

On reboot, I get the following:

[QUOTE]

It looks like it can't find vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5 in /boot.

I have rebooted using the Centos Install Disk 1 and gone in to rescue mode. Rescue mode mounted my / under /mnt/sysimage, from there I could see that /boot had been mounted from /dev/sda1 as it should be.

However, there was no initrd.image or /vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5 under /boot or /boot/grub. Shouldn't the CentOS installer have created these?

Is there anyway I can recover this installation?
