I had no enough space under /boot & i tried to resize this patition without success. A Linux-user's told to me that it is possible to erase the latest kernel releases but i have no idea about this think.
View 2 RepliesI am eagerly awaiting my newly purchased lenovo sl510 and once received intend on loading opensuse 11.3 onto it as my primary os. I understand this particular laptop has had some issues with acpi.
Can anyone comment on how this is now with newer kernel releases since the default installed with the opensuse 11.3 DVD.
I first tried to use UBCD HDDErase although it won't detect my seagate 1000 GB Sata HD (This worked for my other computer/HD). So I loaded up a OpenSUSE live cd rescue terminal to enter the command (of course after setting a password and making sure HD is not frozen):
time hdparm --user-master u --security-erase uber /dev/sda
The following line appears:
"Issuing SECURITY_ERASE Command, password="uber", user=user
That's all it says and there is no % completed or anything. (as it appears on the wiki)

Also I can still type but theres no command or console or anything it just is blank if I hit enter.Is my HD being wiped right now? or is it not working?
if I have a kernel that does not automatically update because I installed it from a deb, will I be missing out on important security updates or the like? I installed the 2.6.34 kernel because I wanted trim support, but am very concerned that I will miss something important.

So How many releases of kernel 2.6.33 were there? I checked at kernel.org but couldn't find the complete information.
I got the serious problem after update my opensuse 11.2, after update the message appeared and said restart my machine to updates take effect and after restart system doesn't boot GUI workspace it boot into text like space named "Emerald - Kernel 2.6.31.8.0.1 - desktop (tty1)".What can I do to boot my machine into GUI again?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian 6.0.1a (64bit) onto a machine that had Debian 5.08. It freezes up almost immediately after loading the kernel. The last line, about 2.6 seconds in, is where it found a SATA drive. (There are two SATA drives). This is a Tyan S2912 with Opteron 2347HE. It seems to be kernel release related. I tried the 5.08 disc again, and it works OK.
With other distros, such as Opensuse and Ubuntu, I have the same problem. The newer releases freeze up almost instantly after loading the kernel. Am I stuck with IDE drives or older kernels? I wanted to try something newer as the fonts in the 5.0.8 release were barely legible. It gave me nauseating headaches within a couple of hours of looking at it. My wife couldn't stand to see it when she came by. I've tried every bios setting change I could think of without a solution.
I was installing the kernel-pae, in the middle of the installation it said it couldn't resolve some dependencies. it ask me to ignore or cancel I chose to cancel there after my system froze.
Now I cant boot any more I get the following:
I received a kernel update a few days ago. When I try to boot with kernel 2.6.37, I get a few errors saying that a volume couldn't be mounted and that /lib/modules/2.6.37-desktop/modules.dep couldn't be found. I'm then left with a minimal terminal prompt.
Is this a common problem? If not, I'll try to take a picture of the error so that you can see exactly what happened. I can still boot with kernel 2.6.34 like I could before the update.
I'm trying to work with Xen for the first time,if I mess up some of the lingo here or if I don't quite make sense. I've been running openSUSE 11.2 since it first was released, and after an initial problem with my video driver, its been working great. I tried to install Xen today, and after the install appeared to complete successfully, it asked me to reboot and boot into the Xen kernel. When I did this, although the system booted up to the command line, it didn't launch KDE. When I try to start KDE manually it tells me that it "Can't connect to X server".
This seems to be roughly the same problem I had when I first installed openSUSE but I can't for the life of me remember how in god's name I fixed it.
My laptop threw a wobbly recently (same time as kernel update?) I have got it to find the old kernel, but it still won't boot.It's a 11.3 install, dual-booted with XP. The /boot partition is in the root partition - sda7. Why is it trying to mount sda7 as swap? (not in fstab like that)

I've found 2 kernels : Kernel-trace and kernel-rt i tried both of 'em but i cannot boot up suse. The first one gets to 3/4 of the loading bar , i hear the welcome sound and then it won't do anything else. The second won't do anything, black screen.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am unable to boot the xen kernel but can boot the desktop kernel. The machine boots and the last message I see is:

After this the screen just turns into a random mess. It looks like graphics memory is pointing at a area of memory filled with random data. The computer actually boots but the display is unusable and the keyboard fails (num lock doesn't work). I can cleanly halt by pressing the power button and waiting for disk activity to stop. After reading several other threads I've tried various combinations of vga=mode-0x0f00 and nomodeset but the result is always the same. I've set the vga mode to 0x0f00 as I actually get to see up to the "Created cpupool...." in this mode. The system boots without any issues with opensuse 11.2.
I'm using a gigabyte GA-Q35M motherboard and the output from lspci is:

this goes to grub boot menu where I then select my old kernel 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop and it boots OK.
Question: Should root(hd2,2) be (hd0,2) like the working kernel?
My menu.lst is:
sda and sdb are not used at this time, sdb will have 12.1 Ms soon. The two windows drives are used by virtualvox for WIN XP backup. Not used often.
I've recently performed a clean upgrade from 11.0 to 11.3 (wipe / partition to ext4, retain /home disk, swap partition etc.) and everything is fine, installed as Gnome distro with KDE3 from repos.Anyway, I've noticed that SuSE will say "doing fast boot" and suspend any console spew until after the kernel has finished with hardware detection and the like. I'd like to be able to see exactly what's happening with the kernel at boot, as I'm quite paranoid and in the event of system failure etc. it would be difficult to view the logs post-boot. Also, my IDE optical drives have a habit of sometimes only being partially detected due to the power line being somewhat intermittent, and I've seen the kernel attempt to re-stablish a link on 11.0, whereas I'd never be able to see that in 11.3 unless I see the console spew, so it would look like the system hanging on "doing fast boot".
Note: I do not want to disable splash=silent, unless spalsh has another option which will give me the desired functionality. I want to have a silent boot, with the option of going verbose with Esc; it's one of the things that I love about SuSE.Oh, and Grub was a nightmare as usual with disk ordering differing at run-time from config file and the total freeze at "loading stage2", so I had to manually fix that. Why does the installer seemingly ignore or revert the specific options I set for GRUB? I understand that the default options for GRUB are ok for single disk users, but my disk ordering is not overly exotic. I stress that this was not user error, as I've had the same issue from going from 10.2 to 10.3 to 11.0, even though they were clean grub installs (rewrites). /rant.
Yesterday I updated openSuse 11.3 on my laptop. Kernel update from 2.6.34.4-0.1... to 2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop was included. Yast performed fine and at the end it stated to reboot for using the new Kernel. So I did, but what a bad surprise!! Normally the Grub menu should have been updated, but not this time. Fortunately I know how to handle this, but not all users will be able to resolve this problem, so here's what to do if this happens to you: You will run into the Text console saying: Press any button to continue... Before doing this write down on a piece of paper the text lines visible on the screen, starting with:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi....... resume=/dev/disk........
or whatever it reads for your system. You will need this info to edit the menu and succeed to boot. Now press any key and you will get the Grub menu. The standard option will be highlighted. press "e" to edit that option. Next you will see the Grub menu lines
First press key "o" to add a new line, select it by arrow down, press "e" to edit the line. (In my case it was not possible to edit the full original line, but only the added options like vag=0x317) Enter the line you wrote down, but change the kernel's version number to the new one Should look similar like:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi.......
(it works if you only use the part before "resume=/dev/disk....") After finishing hit Enter and you will turn bach to the Grub menu lines. Now move with the up/down arrow key to the old line, press "d" to remove the old line. Next move to the line with "initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop", press "e" and edit the line so that it reads: initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop press Enter to move back to the Grub menu lines. Now press "b" to boot. After booting log in, open your file manager as root, browse to /boot/grub and open the menu.lst file to edit and change the kernel old version numbers to the new one. Save it and next time it your machine will boot normally again.
I installed Opesuse 11.2 and I manged to install the Nvidia driver and it works fine. Then I enabled the Compiz and it works fine. During the Opensuse 11.2 installation I installed the XEN becuase I wanted to run multipile XEN guest, I have Nividi GeForce 9600 GT and I have 8 G of RAM and 1.5 TB.
When I decided to boot from XEN mode, it do not boot and it went to the terminal, I logged in I tried to install the Nivid driver in XEN mood and I wan in the init 3, it says:

I have updated to the new kernel that was available from 11.2 and now I cant use my system.
It boots up into kde 4.3.5 and then right when its just finishing it freezes everytime and I hear that last tone of the bootup sound ring continually until I force a shutdown. Anyone else have this issue with the update?
Is it possible using YAST to make it possible to be given the option to boot the previous kernel when a new one is installed during an update?
View 9 Replies View Relatedtelling me if this behavior of my openSuSE 11.2 installation is normal? I use a 64-Bit openSuSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.x with root partition ext4. After adding and updating from repository kernel:/HEAD/etc to 2.6.34-rc4 I can not boot anymore due to a lack of module ext4. I thought today ext4 is stable and fix built-in in the actual kernel releases, isn't it? The error message at boot time: FATAL: Module ext4 not found. Which is right because in /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/ there is NO 'fs' subfolder. Isn't the kernel:/HEAD/ repository the official update path to get a newer major kernel? (besides openSuSE's Updates for security reasons) Do you know how I can fix it without self-compiling?

I have a dual boot laptop with OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. The boot loader used is Ubuntus Grub that came with the Ubuntu installation.
I have done a zypper dup and upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.4. When I reboot my system I can no longer boot into OpenSUSE, Grub says something about a missing kernel.
I think I understand whats wrong here; the OpenSUSE entry in Grubs table hasn't been updated with the changes brought in by the zypper dup (new kernel i guess).
I'm I correct to assume this? How do I fix the problem? Booting into Ubuntu I tried to find /boot/grub/menu.lst to examine it by I cannot find it. I know Ubuntu use a newer version of Grub, does it have a different file layout?
I've built my own kernel and now boot.preload complains about the missing preloadtrace.ko kernel module.

A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.

this is what i did i downloaded the latest stable kernel archive from kernel.org and extracted the archive into the download directory (i don't think that matters though) then i downloaded and installed the ncurses archive (needed for menuconfig) then i opened a terminal and navigated to the directory that was extracted from the archive and issues the floowing commands
