OpenSUSE Install :: Any Way To Backup Mail Folders?
Aug 29, 2010
I'd like to know if there is a way to backup mail folders, as they are. I already tried trough the "file" menu saving function, but it seems to be available for single messages, otherwise it saves more selected messages as unique file. I'd like to manage mails directly on backup support, one by one if I need...

How to backup and restore local folders in K Mail. I understand that this is a rudimentary question-- under K Mail in 11.2 there is no backup and restore option for local folders (that I have been able to find anyway). I use 11.2 on this machine where I do all e mail, browsing and everything pretty much internet related. I am going to upgrade to 11.4 in another week and want to make sure that I understand backup and restore procedures for K Mail...in case something untoward happens during the upgrade to 11.4.

For some time Ihave copied my email folders in .mbox format to files which I then can save to cd. Unfortunately, these files are one (very) large concatenation of email text+attachments which are very inconvenient when searching for a lost email. Question:how to backup emails from within Kmail? And, yes, I did read the Kmail manual cover-to-cover and found nothing relevant.

does anyone know of a good backup software for Ubuntu 10.4 that will let me select which folders to backup, rather than a complete backup? My install and settings etc can be replaced, but my photos and memories cannot!

When I backup with Dejadup, does it backup only the folders or the OS as well?
In case of a real crash, can I bring back the system to its pre crash state including the OS, using Dejadup backed up files?

I'm recently switched my work laptop from running winXP to runing karmic. I'm still at the stage of getting my various bits and bobs working correctly. One of these I (may) have a problem with is backup's. I've ran backuppc on a ubuntu 9.04 box in the attic for the last year or so and I've been backing up my laptop to that. But since the switch, since I have an encrypted home dir, what is being backed up is the encrypted files. First, can I recover these if needed (I kept a copy of my passphrase), or can I get backuppc to ssh in as me with my home dir mounted correctly?
Backuppc is using rsync over ssh I've been using linux on and off since about redhat 5.0, so I'm not afraid of the command line or vi

I'm using ubuntu for a few weeks now and i created a backup script that can copy some folders into a .tgz file. Now i want to place back the folders to where they come from and overwrite the original folder. like the /home folder in the .tgz file overwrite the /home folder on my harddrive. I already tried to do this with: tar xvpfz filename.tgz. But after that the folders came in the same folders as the backupfile stands.
How can i do this the right way?

I have installed also Vista on my PC, but "Documents and Settings" f.e. is void if I mount the Vista partition. In this case its not very important. But a week ago i'd run a XP-Laptop with 9.04 live-CD for backup. That worked fine (The XP was very damaged). I put the 40GB data on my PC through the WLAN during one night without any aid else. All the XP files are well accessible. And I put it back later on a fresh XP.But what would have happen with a Vista-Laptop? Anyone an idea how to reach all Vista or 7 files with a live CD? Or at least from my installed 8.04 to installed Vista.
I think it works alternatively from Win7 running using a USB hard drive adapter if you change the rights on Vista or 7 on the connected hard drive. Not tested.

Recently, Ubuntu was doing a standard update. It got stuck in some kind of strange loop. So i put the boot disk in cleared the master drive and reinstalled ububtu 10.4. I have a backup 500gb drive that use to keep the contents of my important information for my fileserver. After the completed install and found the backup drive STILL named "FILESERVER" and still has my folders aka: our pictures, our music, and our video. I opened them up and they're all empty. Am I missing some informaton? I swear i didn't format the drive. I couldn't have since the folders are still there. Where are all my files at?

Today I tried to compress some folders containing backup files from last year. I right-clicked on the folders and selected compress as tar.gz. I let it work, and found that hours later, the folders were still compressing. How long is it supposed to take, anyway? I was trying to compress the two sets of backups simultaneously; together they're around 1.5 GB. They have many subdirectories.

I m going to create a backup script for my files/folders...
This script creates tar.gz of the folders/files you want.
This i want is to encrypt these .tar.gz files and when i need them to decrypt them. Does anyone have an idea on how to encrypt these files ?
my script looks like this :
Code:
BACKUPDATE=$(date +%d%m%Y)
cd /home/n3t
echo "taking Backup of your home/n3t/Downloads dir"
tar -czvf /media/disk/BACKUP/home/Downloads/$BACKUPDATE.tar.gz ./Downloads

I store all my personal files inclduing mail folders on my external usb drive which allows me to experiment with different distros freely. On each new install i point the mail settings to my mozilla folder. But Slackware 13 is throwing a lot of challenges my way. I am currently finding that I cannot copy recently arrived mail into my designated folders. The message says something about I am running out of disk space when in fact I have plenty of space.
I initially thought it might have something to do with file permissions. But definitely not in this case. The folder is owned by myself and has full permissions chmod 775.I am currently using windows which gives access to all my mail folders.

Just installed latest Ubuntu (dual boot with XP until settled in) and also installed Evolution as default mail client. All works well. But, I need to import my nested, hierarchical mail folders (over 200) from Thunderbird on XP in to Evolution. Is there any speedier and less laborious way than importing single mail folders and then having to re-arrange them all?

I frequently receive e-mail from mailing lists in which I would like to stay active in, although when I access my e-mail I'd like to be able to have the unimportant e-mails in their specific IMAP-folders so I can read them later when I have time.
There is one very important requirement. It bugs me that people continuously keep advising me poor solutions that involve forwarding e-mail e.g. to blabla-mailinglist@domein.tld or storing the e-mail locally. I work frequently from different locations, use different e-mail accounts and see e-mail stored on the server rather than on my local machine as a great advantage.c.
I was thinking of preferably a simple solution that works via a cronjob to do sorting, so it will also work for Plesk and Gmail IMAP accounts. Sorting based on from/to/subject should be sufficient.

I have an account in university on Linux machine with 10TB of free space accessible via SFTP. I would like to backup my Windows 7 x64 laptop to university. Currently I am using rsync+cygwin, but backup is pretty slow (without shadow copy) and I hate console window appearing every day on my screen when I login.
So I am looking for something like Windows Backup but with support for SFTP. Combination of tools will work too.

I have win 7 ultimate. I would like to install opensuse but with the option to revert back to my old MBR in case things don't work out. my win 7 dvd gives a version error everytime i try to restore the MBR so i end up having to reinstall windows 7 in it's entirety Is there a tool that allows me to reload my MBR without going into windows? i recently botched an install and got a grub 17 error lol so i could not go into windows. That was funny. Also is there a way to install opensuse without touching my MBR at all. (it's going on a separate drive by itself). I want win 7 as my main, and i'm good with just an entry for opensuse, which i can remove at my pleasure if i'm tried of it

Having a problem with Evolution not starting.
It is version 2.28.3-2
Simply doesn't start. Brings up the main mail window, doesn't show any mail folders, and doesn't respond to any key presses or mouse clicks.
Other users on the same PC have no problems, so it must be user specific. Some sort of config problem I guess. But where ? This particular user has over 500Mb of mail in folders.

I just wonder how to best partition a harddrive with essential folders.
My current installation has a layout like this.
The rest is in '/' integrated.
Does it make sense to give more folders a own partition? And if so, how much should you apply to each folder?
There are 2 users on the computer and there is nothing special or big installed.
I have currently 2 more harddrives which host music/picture & movie data's.
The reason for my question is just that i want to save my data in case of one folder failing.

I want to backup all the data in my /home folder/partition (before upgrading).
1. In How to migrate to a new openSUSE version - openSUSE it is only written how to backup *one* users data.
If you know the path to your external harddisk, just open a konsole and do:
Code:
$ su
1. cd /home
2. cp -b -vvv username_to_be_backed_up /media/<folder_of_your_external_harddisk>
How can I backup *all* users' data in one folder "home-double"?
2. Has the external disk have to have any special file system?
I have an 500 GB disk in fat with some data already on it. Can this be used? Or do I have to make an new (ext3?) partition on my external hard disk to preserve permissions? Do I have to worry about big files under FAT?
3. Should I make anything to get sure that all data is the same in "home-double" as in "/home"?
Now I am using (on my Samsung X20) openSuse 11.1 and Gnome 2.24.1 (mostly, 1 account is using KDE) and Kernel Linux 2.6.27.45-01.1-pae. "/home" is on an separated partition (as part of an extended partition). I have also 2 NTFS partitions for Windows XP (System and Data), and a FAT, a root (/) and a swarp partition.

I do regular full and incremental backups using dar. All disk volumes are labeled and mounted by label. There is no other operating system installed. I built a new system but due to having to RMA a disk, I built the openSUSE system on a disk from the backup cycle. This Maxstor disk has problems which is why it was moved into an external box and the backup system. I now have a replacement disk and wish to replace the Maxstor before it dies. I initially tried a disk to disk clone with clonezilla but this died complaining that a small target partition was smaller than the source partition. It had created the partition and the start and end sectors were identical. There are no problems with the new disk.
I decided that it would be a good opportunity to test a full system disk restore from the backups. I have in the past restored individual files and partitions but have never restored onto a bare boot disk. I have restored and labeled all 6 partitions. The partition containing / has been marked as active. /boot is included in the partition containing /. fstab is valid, menu.lst is valid, device.map needs editing but this is not a problem.
What do I need to do to make this disk bootable. I have looked through the GRUB documentation but if you try some standard GRUB commands in 11.3 you get messages saying don't do this use YAST. I have seen other suggestions ranging from trying to start the not supported system repair option to using dd to copy the MBR which seemed to trash the partitions in the users extended partition.
The YAST bootloader displays "boot from the root partition". I assume that this is currently what is happening rather than what YAST thinks might be a good idea for next time. I suspect that all I have to do is dd the first 512 bytes of the root partition. If this is the case I can add this to the backup process. While I automate backups I do not automate restores. Each restore tends to be different and I am not sure of the best way getting grub to work on a bare disk restore.

I've just upgraded to 11.04 and I created a evolution-backup.tar.gz file as I've done in other upgrades. When I restored the backup and started Evolution, I've lost all the emails in top-level folders (Inbox, Sent, Drafts etc). My own custom folders within these top level folders contain the emails that I backed up. There are quite a few important emails that I've yet to respond to in my Inbox and this is very concerning. Also, I've lost all my Contacts!
