Online Updates checks for updates too frequently, and the notification icon appearing and disappearing in the system tray is visually distracting. Can I modify Software Update to check once every 24 hours?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi probably messed up the clock somehow... I think during install. Linux keeps messing up windows clock... And vice versa... When the clock in windows is correct (say, 2 PM), the clock in Linux when i reboot says 4 PM... And when i set up the clock in Linux to the correct time (in this case 2 PM) and boot into windows, windows clock says 12 PM...
Of course, when i correct it in windows, linux clock gets messed up again... 2 hours early or forward, idk... I'm not sure what i did to make this happen... Maybe has something to do with hardware clock... I don't wanna constantly correct time whenever i change systems...
Tried upgrading from 8.04 lts to 10.04 and it wouldn't work b/c of too many mods to my 8.04 system? So I tried a fresh install per usb stick. System kept locking up during install, as well as when I run it from the usb, I've since learned. graphics card? I can't log into windows either per the grub loading please wait error 15. I've googled & searched the forums & everything I've tried doesn't work, there were some possible solutions that I don't understand how to do. can't get to a terminal to check or modify anything. Hitting "e" at the boot menu does nothing. I don't know how to do anything from here! Compaq Presario SR5350, 2GB RAM, Dual Core Proc 2150MHz. Dual boot w/Vista, HDD is partitioned separately with Root, Home & swap. Also, sda5 or / has been formatted to ext4, still using grub 1.5.

The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!

If I follow this immediately with a yum update then it tries to install drbd83. I've tried a yum clean all and repeated the commands and get the same thing. This happens on both the machines that are set up to use DRBD. Just seems weird and I don't understand. Anyone got an explanation?

After a recent update, when ever I attempt to open a ".ogv" extension from within Dolphin File Mananger in KDE4.4.2, I get a window that pops up every time for Checking For additional Software to install. It does this in spite of the fact I already have several players and the default set to SMPlayer to play the files. How do I turn this behavior off? It's really annoying because you either have to wait for it to finish checking (and finding nothing BTW) or Cancel it in order to play the file. This just started recently. I don't see anything obvious in Dolphin configuration, but I'm not even sure it's related to Dolphin at all.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThere are numerous fs checks with transaction log replay at every boot of my opensuse 11.4 notebook.I do not see any error messages on the console during shutdown or startup (but maybe I am just reading too slow)./var/log/messages contains some error messages from NetworkManager during shutdown, but I think they are unrelated.Filesystems I use are ext4 for /boot, ntfs for windows partitions, reiserfs for the root filesystem and for several logical volumes.
As far as I could see the checks are only done on the reiserfs filesystems on the logical volumes but I cannot see any warnings during volume group activation, so it seems the logical volumes are deactivated at shutdown.Of course I do wait until the notebook powers off by itself on shutdown.I'll provide /var/log/messages of a shutdown/boot shortly

Because I was getting some package errors, I ran the Repair Installed System option that shows up after boot. During System Check when earching for package databases,YaST2 is not able to find /var/lib/rpm/Filemd5s. After a while, a YaST2 box pops up and says that it Successfully rebuilt the package databaseïbut I get the same error when I run System Check again. I've chosen both Rebuild Package Database as well as Revert to Original Package Database (saved by YaST)In both cases, it saysat it was successful, but the same error occurs the next time I run System Check

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been experiencing one issue in my opensuse 11.3 KDE, the thing is when leave my pc downloading a file, it disconnects after a period of time, I don't know when exactly. I connect to internet at boot time via DSL modem, when I was setting up my connection I noticed, that there is an option "idle-timeout" I set it to zero "0", I know that my pc donwloads all the time and speed do not drop, why then it disconnects?, it disconnects even with higher numbers of idle-timeout. It happened on the other laptop too, so I need every time to "rcnetwork restart" to get it back working

I am using ImageWriter, an OCZ Rally 4gb flash drive and have tried both HTTP and BitTorrent downloaded copies of 11.3 with the same md5sum check wrong error. What am I doing wrong? Is it because it thinks it is a CD or am I getting bad copies of the ISO? I am so out of practice I can't remember anything about installation anymore and am at a loss.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a switch tray on my computer and I installed opensuse in one of the hard drives that I have but as I switch between the windows hard drive and opensuse the time changes all the time. For example it's 10pm right now and if I switch the hard drive to opensuse the time automatically gets adjusted 4 hours back and then I fix it and when I switch back to my windows hard drive the time goes forward 4 hours. I check both region settings and they are both set to NY Eastern time. Why is it doing this?

if the system is started it runs perfectly but after nearly 10 or 12 hours running without any server or ftp action the systemspeaker permanently beeps
no error in errorlog and sensors are showing fine temperatures . i tried 2 different boards (asus p5qlpro , msi p6mgm fd) with different speed intel dual-core processors
this problem is quiet enoying, so i hope that somebody can help me tracking down this problem and find a solution. When i open vlc or exaile and queue a list of tracks, after playing some hours, the sound hangs and in the music player repeats the same 1 second audio part like a hickup, in video programs like vlc also the film freezes.
i have the latest libraries of gstreamer from packman installed and i also tried updating the pulseaudio libraries from multimedia repo. but the problem is still the same
I just reinstalled my OpenSuse 11.3 with the GNOME desktop. As soon as I was done installing and I was on a fresh desktop, I installed the Yast updates that were available, rebooted, and now I can't login to any of my User accounts. Whenever I try to login, it tells me that it is "Unable to Open Session".o any of you know how I can fix this without having to reinstall all over again

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(...) package... It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.
I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don't think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.
I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem.
I have a Cent OS dedicated server, not sure what version though as I'm new to Linux. How do I find out what version I have? Is there an anti virus or security package that I can install on my server which can use Cron Jobs to do a scan every 12 hours.

The motherboard I got has a feature (I don't think I can shut off) that lets you select what drive you want to boot off of. I have XP installed on the first drive and openSUSE 11.1 on the second drive. I am running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5 and I simply dropped my drives onto this new motherboard. I can boot up (Linux) just fine but am having other issues with my mouse. I am thinking of Updating to openSUSE 11.2 and the current KDE version.
Should I just update to 11.2 or do a new install. I have LOTS of data in my home directory I really don't want to lose and have a partition for data as well that is pretty full. I don't want to lose this stuff. What should I do about Grub with this BIOS that lets you pick which drive to boot off of? Put Grub in the MBR of the drive with openSUSE on it and nuke the MBR of the XP drive?
