OpenSUSE :: How To Define "super Users"

Nov 15, 2010

As a business consultant, I've set up my own business and hired 2 java developers who will be developing internal applications. how I should give access to the developers to our server? We are in the process of buying a small server that will be used for serving MySQL, Apache, Tomcat, subversion, Those apps will be for internal use only. The developers would like to have root access to the server to start up and shutdown those services, to change the settings (mostly in /etc) and to look at the logs. I'm planning to install opensuse 11.3 on this hardware, XEN and a virtual machine based on opensuse 11.3 (but without any GUI) that will host those apps.

Should I define 3 users with root access (me + 2 developers) or 1 root (me) and 2 users that will have be part of the mysql, apache, ... group or 1 root for all?

Ubuntu :: Buttons References - Use The <Super>ButtonX (<Super>Button1 For The Enabled Compiz Screenshot Plugin)?

Jun 5, 2011

how to use the <Super>ButtonX (<Super>Button1 for example for the enabled Compiz Screenshot plugin)? I also notice there is configurable buttons 1 throught 20 under the various options. At first I thought the ButtonX was a mouse button. Maybe it is with some anticipation of there being eventually being a possible 20 buttons on the mouse. I know the Super key is the Key with the Windows logo on it. But I don't know what to do to get the needed Super Key / Button combination. After having enabled Compiz's Screenshot plugin by its default, I don't get an image after hitting any of the Super key and mouse button combinations. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04.

OpenSUSE Install :: Multi Language Support - Define The Compose Key In 11.2?

Feb 13, 2010

I have been trying to upgrade (ended up trashing and reinstalling) from 11.1 to 11.2. I selected French language with UK keyboard. This option seems in the end to just default to the French keyboad. Reinstalled with UK lang and UK keyboad which is acceptable to me but I then find a big problem. How do I set the compose key so I can enter accented characters etc. ( ...) Prior to 11.2 this was some with SAX but SAX support for keyboards appears to have been removed and I believe should be provided by KDE, Gnome, etc.

Does anyone know how to define the compose key in 11.2? I have searched google and the suse forums but found nothing other than something in German that I did not understand. While I could buy a French or perhaps better a Swiss keyboard for the tower this is not a real option for the laptop and on-screen keyboards are useless.

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 Freezes With Super Button?

May 21, 2010

I've been Linux-only for several years, and (finally!) installed Suse 11.2; AMD 64-bit, 3Gb RAM.I'm getting random freezes, after I've pressed the Super (Windows) button; screen still visible, mouse pointer moves, but nothing happens, I have to restart. Really frustrating; it's my major complaint, otherwise 11.2 looks good.: I use super+scroll button for desktop zoom in Mint with no problem at all.

OpenSUSE :: 'users' Is The Default Group For New Users?

Sep 4, 2011

In other Linux distros I've used, new users are assigned to their own group (i.e. user 'joe', group 'joe') by default. To my surprise, when I create new users with my openSUSE 11.4, they are all assigned to the 'users' shared group by default. To test this, I created a new user called 'friends'. From my terminal, I can see how the new user files look like:

joe@linux:~> ls -l /home/friends/
total 40
drwxr-xr-x 2 friends users 4096 Sep 3 11:37 bin

OpenSUSE Hardware :: All 11.1 Users: Fill In HCL For OpenSUSE-11.1?

Dec 23, 2008

For all openSUSE users who are now running openSUSE-11.1.

Please fill in the openSUSE-11.1 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) listing your success/failures with 11.1 with different hardware. Please be very brief (this is not the place for rants).

The URL for the wiki is here: Hardware - openSUSE

Editing a wiki is not everyone's "cup of tea" and for anyone who has hardware information they think should be in the opensuse HCL wiki, but they hate (or can not) work their way through the obscure wiki format, please just send me a PM with ALL the salient hardware details. I'll fill in the wiki for you and then ask you to review it.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Define User /password For Sasl?

Mar 26, 2011

I need define a user /password for sasl but want the authentication at runtime be automatic - no explicit prompting the user while accessing a tcp socket with some applications that need the authentication (e.g libvirt)

so I try : saslpasswd2 -c -p -a libvirt <user>

and it hangs (if i now press Enter it says : "invalid parameter supplied") . if I avoid the -p flag the above commad works fine and prompts for password and later when using the tcp it prompts for the above defined user/password and autheticates ok .
But I want without the explicit authentication

The man pages says -p Pipe mode - saslpasswd2 will neither prompt for the password nor verify that it was entered correctly. This is the default when standard input is not a terminal.

In the past (before some upgrading of libvirt via rpm) I had the SASL authentication at runtime done automatically with no explicit prompting the user
