I am running xubuntu 10.04 under wubi. I have a Sony Handycam 700x Digital8. It is plugged into the USB port and not recognized. Nothing shows for it with lsusb.
How do I get the files off it? And once I get them, how do I edit?

Just bought a sony HDR-XR150 high def handycam. Thought since it had a USB connection (no firewire) that it would just mount as a drive and I'd be able to download the videos no problem. Well, it turns out it's a big problem... all the apps capable of talking to video cameras seem to only be able to use firewire. The camera does indeed mount as a drive but none of the video files I found seem to work... I get some video on some of the files from vlc but no sound and nothing seems to be able to transcribe the video. I'm currently on kubuntu 9.10 64 bit (2.6.31-20-generic)
Update: Found a series of .mts files on the camcorder. Nothing would read them properly except kdenlive -- seems to be the only thing that works!

Sony currently only supplies its NEX cameras with .exe binary firmware updates. Prior to purchasing the camera, I installed Wine and was able to execute the .exe. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that it'll work. Now, with the camera in hand, I actually tried to update the firmware. It didn't work. I tried using Wine 1.1.28 and 1.3.3 and even the cloned the Wine repository with git and compiling Wine with USB patches I found here: [URL] (Wine git, compile and install found here: USB - The Official Wine Wiki)
With the camera connected, I was able to use "wineconsole cmd" to open a dos shell. In the shell, I was able to see that the D: drive (which I assigned to /media/disk) was correctly accessing the camera as a mass storage device. I can only conclude that USB support works. However, it doesn't appear to work for updating the firmware. The firmware program from Sony searches for about a minute and doesn't find the camera. When I run the firmware updater with Wine, Wine produces these files:
[Code]....
The .dat file looks most likely to be the data I want to dump to the camera, but how? (I've done some research and have read that the data is probably encrypted.)

I have recently installed inkscape on a KDE4 desktop using opensuse 11.3.I tried opening a .ARW file coming from a Sony NEX digital camera. The open file dialog page indicates that .arw files are supported, but when i try to do so a failure error message box appears.I started by asking this question at inkscape.org and got this response:

I have a recently upgraded OpenSuse 11.3 system (this problem also appeared to me in OpenSuse 11.2). I have a Sony DSC-W290 camera, and I would like to connect to this camera to get the photos. When I plug the camera to the USB the camera sets itself to "Memory Stick" but nothing happens on the Gnome Linux desktop. I assume that the system should automatically mount the filesystem as it does correctly with other devices (external USB disks and classical memory sticks).
This is the output of the last lines of 'dmesg'

Other than several other problems on my new Sony VAIO I solved with workarounds (it's a terrible machine for working with Linux especially for NVIDIA drivers) I cannot make my microphone working.
Code:
malvasia:~ # uname -a
Linux malvasia.yacme 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-10-25 08:40:12 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
malvasia:~ # aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC275 Analog [ALC275 Analog] .....
I've found a patch to make mic on ALC275 working but I don't know if it's applicable to 11.3 kernel nor if there is a easier solution to adopt.

I tried to installed OpenSUSE 11.2 "i586" on an older Sony Vaio laptop (model PCG-XG9) with 20 GB HD and 128 or 256 MB RAM. There is no ethernet port, but I have a PCMCIA WLAN card "Cabetron RoamAbout 11 Mbit/s", which should work perfectly with any Linux. The computer had Win98 on it originally (which, of course, after all installation attempts is now destroyed). The problem is that I cannot install to the end at all - no matter what I try:
1) Having the disk as a single FAT partition (made by a Win98 installation CD), it appears that the installer cannot create the correct partitions needed for Linux.
2) Having deleted the DOS partition with FDISK from Windows98 - which is like buying a completely new, unformatted HD from a store. But again, it cannot automatically set the partitions...
Is there a manual / instruction page somewhere how I should partition the disk manually (how to do it, and what sizes are recommended for each partition)?

Well, after searching several forums and trial and error, I finally got my builtin webcam to work. Its r5u870 05ca:1836. The only problem I now have is that after a hard boot (system was powered down), I then have to do a soft boot for this to work properly. It seems to me that the problem is the firmware loading. Obviously, doing a shutdown -r means that the firmware remains in the webcam device and then everything seems OK.
After a soft boot:
linus:~/bin # lsmod|grep -e sony -e uvc -e r5u
r5u870 26436 0
usbcam 47808 1 r5u870

linus:~/bin # luvcview -L
luvcview version 0.2.1
Video driver: x11
A window manager is available
video /dev/video0
/dev/video0 does not support read i/o .....
After a hard boot, luvcview will not display anything after the line beginning with

How to make this all work without the soft reboot?

Got this new Sony from BB on black friday. I also have the pcg-7184l that works fine and the specs looked very similar. Everything seems to work but the touch pad. I am running able to use a USB mouse with no issue. A search online has not been fruitful so now to ask the community. I am willing to start from basics because I am either overlooked something or missing something. On hardware info all I show is the Sony Jogdial and the USB mouse under mouse. That is making me think that HAL is not even detecting the hardware. According to Sony the windows driver is ALPS so for some reason this one is not being detected by the kernel. I had done a clean install and then updates but the touchpad still does not seem to work in Linux but it was working under Windows7 (has since been removed but I do have an image if I have to restore back to windows.

I can't get Ubuntu to mount my Sony DRU540A, no matter what I do. Audio CDs, Data CDs and burning are impossible, does anybody have any ideas on how to mount this unmountable drive? It worked well enough to install Jaunty Jackalope, and I never had any problems using this drive with windows xp, but now that I've upgraded Karmic Koala it doesn't seem to work no matter what I try.

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 64bit on Sony Vaio CW and the Screen is 14 inch when I boot from CD it seems to work normal but after i select "Try Ubuntu without installing" or "Install Ubuntu" then the screen goes black like nothing happening but the CD runs for while then stop. Again I reboot to try again this time I press F6 then select "nomodeset" and it boots fine I was happy though, after installation success when I boot again WTF it goes black again and then I reboot and press "E" during the options that showing to select OS then I remove "Quit Splash".
I guess then I add "nomodeset" and control+X to boot, it works fine. So when I log in and of course I activate the Nvidia Graphic Driver then I reboot and WTF again the screen was out sync or something like the the screen didn't show properly. The Application menu normally is on the upper left of the screen but this time it was on the center of screen and the Shut down button came to the left side and i have to move the mouse cursor to the right and then it would appear on the left just like the resolution is to big for the screen.

My Sony DV cam is about 6 years old so not really new technology but F12 will not detect the cam over firewire. When I turn on the cam I do not see anything in F12 (although I do not know where I would see the camera). When I run KDEnlive and hit connect on firewire it does not detect the camera.
I am dual booting with Win7 and the camera is detected there so I know my card, cable and connection are good.
lspci shows the firewire port as follows:

I'm running ubuntu 9.10 and I'm having difficulty with my Sony DRU-540a & burning CDs. No matter what, every disc I put in is unwritable. In Brassaro it says:
There is No Recordable Disc Inserted
So I tried Nero & that also said there was no recordable disc. I know these discs are blank, I just bought them yesterday. They're the same type of disc I used before switching permanently to ubuntu. When trying to play an audio cd with VLC I get the following error:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.
I installed ubuntu with this drive, why can't ubuntu read it?

I just bought a new TV and I'm trying to use my ubuntu box as a media server. I've included my specs below. Ubuntu recognizes the TV fine and the resolution is automatically set to 1920x1080 according to the display prefs which is native to the TV. I can see the desktop but it extends beyond the borders of my TV, which makes me think that somehow the resolution isn't set properly. I can't see my top or bottom task bar at all
Furthermore, the image is quite messed up. It's hard to explain, but text doesn't appear properly, nor do any icons etc on the desktop, they're somewhat pixellated. What's even more confusing is that movies themselves seem to play fine. I've downloaded some 720p mkv's and they play great, so it's just the desktop itself that is messed. I've installed the NVidia driver manually from their site and it's the latest 173.14.22.

I didn't know that charging via usb for my sony ericsson mobile, w880i actually needs the SE PC Suite to be installed, cos, I used to charge it via usb cable, as mentioned, on my workstation, which is window based, it's kinda insignificant to me that the software has to be installed first.
However, I'm currently on the move, with my newly installed "netbook", I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my twinhead efio 121A (which is good, no compatibility issue) and now, I just figured that, SE PC Suite does not have any linux version, but my mobile is already out of battery, and I desperately need to charge it,
I did run a lsusb, it doesn't seem to detect the phone, neither as usb storage, or as a phone, cos, I saw other people lsusb output, it's an item with "sony ericsson", but my output does not have such item. However, when I plug in the usb cable, it did prompt to ask me to choose between "file transfer" or "phone mode".

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ340E. I installed Ubuntu about 6 months ago and had a problem-free time with it. I then got busy with other stuff (house work, etc.) and hadn't worked on Ubuntu for about a month. Now I switch on my Vaio with Ubuntu and I find the screen is just too bright.Since 10.04 was just coming up, I thought this would be fixed when I update. I updated, but the screen is still too bright.
I searched the forum for answers and found only some pretty old threads which were about the Fn key combos (which, obviously, doesn't work), spicctrl, etc.So I followed the instructions here. I did just what Step 1: Checking for Module says, but Terminal just doesn't give any output.
