There was 11.2/pulseaudio. Everything worked fine. After some software update channels became misplaced (system considered side channels as a front), pulseaudio stopped working at all and was removed. After upgrade to 11.3 mics stopped working. Current state:

I've installed RPMforge and Smart Package Manager.
I had to create my own Centos 5.5 channels to sync yum repos and smart channels.
Here's the Centos 5.5 channel file for Smart:
Just shut Smart PM down, copy this file into /etc/smart/channels, and restart smart.
Smart should then detect the new channels (repos) for Centos 5.5
Update your channels in Smart, and you should then have yum repos and smart channels both in sync, looking at the same set of packages.
Copy this to CentOS-Base.channel, and add it to the /etc/smart/channels directory.

It doesn't matter if I set the audio to 5.1 or 7.1, the center and LFE are silent. I had the same problem in 9.10 but I could work around by using the alsamixer to set the center to 90%, quit, then set back to 100%. This doesn't work in 10.04 as the controls in the alsamixer can't be changed. Is there any way I can get the center channel working? All I can do at the moment is set the sound properties to 4.0 so that the center channel is automatically redistributed to the other channels, but that isn't a great solution.

I had a problem getting my internal sound card to work on 5.1 channels and investigated the links and information given in the various threads and found that there are slight differences from the references to what I had to do. A recent kernel update seems to have misplaced the Kernel Headers. VMWare needs these headers and cannot find them. Attempting to run VMWARE gets the message: Kernel headers for version 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop were not found.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a look at No TV in Kaffeine, but I'm lost. I have an HDTV wonder card. I have installed dvb, ffmpeg, w32-codecs, etc. I am able to watch video/hear audio.
I have updated the scan data in kaffeine, adjusted device 1 tab to my area, but when I open the channels window and scan, it just goes through the motions and lists nothing. Here i partial output from:

KMix 4.6.0 in OpenSUSE 11.4 (x86) doesn't show up channels. It only shows "Internal sound Analog stereo" So I can't set the input/output channels and the headphone channel for my soundcard. The right soundcard drivers are installed (for Creative Sound Blaster Platinum Live Drive). Earlier versions of KMix worked just fine.

I have tried many, many things to try to get the sound card recognized since upgrading from Mint 8 to Mint 9, and have still been unsuccessful...all modules and up to date and alsa was rebuilt this morning (to insure I didn't mess something up with my prior attempts to resolve). I have only been using Linux for about a month now, and really don't want to have to go back to Windows

Get_iplayer worked very well for me under opensuse 11.2. After installing opensuse 11.3 it continued to work very well with the exception of STREAMING live BBC channels. These do not work at all. It seems the "modes" I am and have been using are not recognised. I use gnome and installed codecs using codecs_gnome.ymp for suse 11.3. I have no problem with any of the multimedia applications I use.

Setting a 5GH channel with iwconfig doesn't work. iwpriv doesn't work either:
iwpriv wlan0 set WirelessMode=6
wlan0 no private ioctls.
Changing any settings in /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat doesn't seem to have any effect at all. The driver supplied by SuSE is of version 1.8. On the Ralink website a newer driver of version 2.3 is available; but so far I didn't manage to install it because I am not a C expert. However, the 5GHz channels should be accessible by the older 1.8 version driver. Somehow I suspect that in the SuSE distribution some dynamic parameters are hardcoded and therefore the whole thing fails.
The Network manager didn't recognize my eth0 device as a maned device.In shell I can use my eth0 but not by Gnome Network Manager.My device is nVidia Corporation MCP67 Ethernet [10de:054c] (rev a2) and I'm running a Fedora 11. Ever since, the notification bubble keeps showing misplaced as in the attached picture. I tried reinstalling the notify-osd package but to no avail. I looked around and found that you cannot customize anything about this bubble.

I am converting a lot of videos through FFMPEG using X264 and AAC as the codecs. Some videos have mono sound, some have 2 channels, and some have 5.1. I compiled FFMPEG from source so the codecs are installed correctly but I keep getting an error with 5.1 sound. After the conversion the video plays the sound that should come from the center speak through the right. I tried libfaac and the experimental aac codec inside FFMPEG and both give me the same error.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI FINALLY convinced my wife to try Ubuntu on her laptop. We selected Install 10.4 side-by-side with XP. The grub menu shows up, but Windows is not listed. She's happy with Ubuntu so far, but I'd like to know why I can't use XP anymore. btw, I actually made the mistake of using the import accounts option, which filled up the new partition and made Ubuntu unbootable. The latter is critical and that's why I'm here.So, after some Intel Drivers update, some programs started to work nicely, faster and beautifully. But it corrupted my Dual-Monitor Setup. I don't know what to say, I'm totally desperate. I had to show one of my programs to my teacher using a projector, but with the dual monitor corruption, I called in sick today. I need to use the netbook screen to make changes on the program and the second monitor/projector to show the program working.
I'll show some pictures, but I'm without a camera right now, so I'll use one china-phone that's hanging around here to take a picture. Sorry for the quality. Both Monitors, you can see on the right of the bigger one the corruption I'm talking about.

I use Kaffeine Version 1.0-pre2 and xine 0.99.6 on Fedora 12 64-bit. If I try to watch HD-channels (such as Das Erste HD, ZDF HD, arte HD), there is no sound (or just a few seconds). I read some times, that setting the audio buffer to 750 and the video buffer to 1000 should solve the problem

I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback [URL]
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
when I try to scan for any available satellite channels to use in Myth, I cannot find any channels. I have invoked "scan -V -l UNIVERSAL -s 1 -a 0 /usr/share/dvb/dvb-s/Astra-19.2E" with the following result:

I have a Yuan/Avermedia MC770 mini PCI hybrid card. When I installed ubuntu 11.04 for the first time it found an update for it automatically which I was quite happy about. I installed Me TV and thought so far it was all going quite well. connected it to a roof top aerial and it wouldn't find any channels what so ever Has ubuntu really found and installed the correct drivers? I tried VLC and Media player no result.

Right now I'm trying to get MythTV to bring in my channels. I can see all the channels when I use the Watch TV feature on the frontend, but in the backend I can't get it to work.
In the input COnnections>Television section, I am set up for Schedules Direct. My "Scan for Channels" button is disabled, so I can't use that. However, the "Fetch Channels" button, though enabled does nothing. It doesn't depress when I select it or anything. I can't figure out why. I know my username and password are entered correctly, so I'm drawing a blank.
My video source setup is also set with SD.
I have an Analog V4L capture card selected in the capture cards section. It's a AVI TV Wonder Pro (an old card, but free). It seems to be set up correctly since I can "Watch TV" with it.
In the channel editor, I also do not have the option to do a channel scan. It skips right over that button.
i installed Ubuntu 9.10 and it seems i can't have 5.1 sound playing, i've searched a lot but i still haven't found a solution to my problem. tried to change the default channels from 2 to 6, as well as the default-channel-map and much more but still nothing works..

It was running in the past, i re-installed some days ago and now i have a huge problem. Basically, capturing the microphone works and it's sent to Mumble, however everybody also hears my desktop sound. I tried adjusting channels in KMix with no luck. Also i don't understand why the capture channels are enabled and must stay at minimum volume...

I have made numerous attempts but all have shown the message that it could not be connected to and that I should make sure I spelled it correctly (which I have). I can't get respond through normal channels, all I can use is my phone. My keyboard is disabled. My PC is pretty much a paper weight. Both of them. The only way they could be getting in is through the wifi. I don't know if there is anything I can do. My recovery programsare not accessible. Even onstartup. Is it possible to clear the hard drive another way? I've heard fire purifies, I couldn't get another disc to boot up to reinstall ubuntu. Please text me any ideas, but please be specific with command lines, I have trouble with all the () and / [ and where they go.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was asking around in some IRC channels earlier trying to develop some thoughts on how NFS is better than CIFS. I set up a FreeNAS file server, and that's where all of my data now resides on a pair of raided drives. That way my main desktop, which is kind of a power hog gaming rig, can be powered off since I pretty much live on my laptop now. Anyway, I began to tinker with CIFS and NFS. Since some family members in the household use Windows, I definitely need CIFS. But I wanted to bounce back to NFS too and check it out.
While I do think it's nice I don't have to worry about authentication to the NAS box when using NFS, it's still a little scary. Being that it's more of a trust method instead of actual authentication, truthfully all a user needs to get into your data is the path to your NFS share and a matching UID. I mean, am I wrong by saying this? Sure, it may seem like NFS is convenient, but this angle of it is a little scary. I just don't feel like that screams "secure."
On the flip side, you have CIFS, which uses a user authentication level. So I hit my little shortcut to my NAS and it asks me who I am. I log in and bam, I have connection. I can browse other folders on the share, etc. This is convenient because I do have a "public" share on here with a generic user. That way if friends come over and want to transfer something to me, I have them drop it in the public share and I later transfer it accordingly. Since there is a user level authentication, this to me seems a little more secure.
Speed wise I was a little concerned, as some users have said NFS is faster than CIFS. Well, they might be right. But I did a few bench tests here on my laptop, using the same exact share except one with CIFS one with NFS. I stayed in the exact same location and transferred the same 300mb file in each instance.
NFS - 1.7mb/s
CIFS - 1.5/mb/s
Not exactly enough to warrant a huge argument over, so I leave that argument along the road to be forgot about since it doesn't really have any bearing on this situation. I like things about both NFS and CIFS. I just want to know why is it "not optimal" to use a full blown CIFS setup even if you're using 100% Linux systems.
I have a strange problem with my sound. The best way to summarize the error is that no two applications can mix their output to the default output channel. When I start my computer, the first application to use to the default sound channel seems to have a lock on the channel. No other applications can use that channel until I reboot again. I can close the first application and still nothing can access that other channel.
When a second application tries to access the default channel one of two things happen. Most application's sound gets routed to the headphone channel. In other cases I get error messages that the device is busy. I suspect that this is a related issue, whenever I use the command line command 'play' I get the following error:

Now when I restart the drivers using "/etc/init.d/alsasound restart". All these problems are gone. So this is not a major issue, its just a little annoying. So a little information about my hardware/software:

I am running the current Mythdora and using the latest drivers and firmware todate, or at least what is listed on the HVR1600 wiki page. I can't lock on to any channels no matter what with this installation. Shouldn't it work after confirmation of drivers loaded and firmware upadated? Below I have outputed basic information. I did try a previous version of mythdora and it was able to find and lock to channels provided by my cable service, but had a bad driver so I updated everything.
Another person posted that he swaped pci slots with this tuner card and it worked. [URL]I think I am missing something. I also would add I have two coaxial inputs. Analog and Digital. I am currently using the TV one. I also did a cat /dev/video0 > ./Desktop/test.mpg and it was static. Does anyone have some ideas? I am all ears!
