OpenSUSE Hardware :: Lost Sound After 11.2 To 11.3 Upgrade?
Jul 21, 2010
I'm using a Lenovo (IBM) Think Pad R51.
Here is the link to the website with sound debug information:
HTML Code: [URL]
I get terminal output from a sound test that suggests all is fine:
Code:
speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
speaker-test 1.0.23
Playback device is plug:front
[Code]....
Even I can see that the last bit is probably a problem. However, don't have a clue as to how to proceed.

I'm running 32bit Lenny on an older Dell Dimension 2400 running the 2.6.26 Kernel. This box was mainly used to play movies for my son over the network (most are encoded by me using xvid and lame). One of my kids wanted to use the computer to watch videos on ...... I attempted to install the flashplugin-nonfree from the backports and it kept timing out on downloading the package, so I ran apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade. I rebooted and tried the flashplugin-nonfree again and finally got ..... videos to play but there was no sound. I assumed it was a permission issue, so I switched users and attempted to play some of the movies which I've played before and currently the video plays fine but the audio sounds very ugly. I attempted to play an mp3 using mpg123 from the command line and I get mostly static. You can hear some sound but it's all jumbled and there is a lot of static. I have a creative soundblaster card using the EMU10k1 driver. Everything was working fine before I started mucking with the flashplugin and I'm afraid something I "upgraded" may have caused my issue.
Any suggestions? Is there a way I can remove any sound related drivers etc and attempt to reinstall them? I attempted to run sudo alsaconf but afterwards, it acts like there is no sound card. a reboot resolves that issue as I didn't save any changes, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I've become spoiled by all of the newer distros which detect all of my hardware and everything is configured for me.

I have just upgraded to Fedora 14, with some hope that a F13 kernel crash issue would be resolved. Alas, not, and I have lost audio in one of my sound cards. I am using 2 sound cards in my computer. The first one (VT 1708 on the M2V MX SE motherboard) is used for FLDIGI (ham radio program). The other one (Creative Labs SB Live!) is tied to a speaker/microphone. At some point in mid 2010, I started getting kernel crash reports (not sure which kernel version this started), and the VIA VT 1708 audio controller stopped working. The SB Live! card works fine.
From mesg, I get:
[9.181148] WARNING: at drivers/pci/pci.c:105 pci_ioremap_bar+0x2c/0x5b()
[9.181186] [<c05c36ad>] ? pci_ioremap_bar+0x2c/0x5b
[9.181194] [<c05c36ad>] pci_ioremap_bar+0x2c/0x5b
[9.181299] ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:2510: ioremap error
I've just pulled out the SB LIVE! card to see if it is causing the VT 1708 controller to fail...there appears to be no interaction.
From lspci -v, I get:
20:01.0 Audio device: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controller) (rev 10)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 8290
Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 17
Memory at <ignored> (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
So it seems to know it's there. How to get my sound back (and get rid of this kernel crash every time I start my computer)?

I've just done an upgrade after noticing the Update manager thingee at the bottom of the screen. I was listening to my music when I noticed it.
I did the Restart now after upgrading. Now I have no sound at all. Checked headphones were turned up which they were. Checked sound settings and found there were no Devices in Hardware and Input and a Dummy Output (stereo) listed in Output. I would have thought that my onboard sound would have shown up as well as the sound bits on my HDMI card - not that I've ever managed to get sound out of my telly via the HDMI cable. (I do have Alsa sound installed).

openSUSE 11.2 64bit
libxine1 from Packman
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).
alsa-info here - [URL]
Also I am totally confused by the mixer, it has so many knobs that I am totally lost!
here's a lovely pic - [URL]

Everything was working when I was on Ubuntu 9.04 but after I upgraded to 9.10 via their upgrade utility. The upgrade failed at the last point of installation (when it tried to install daemon I think). Nevertheless, after the reboot I was on ubuntu 9.10. But the sound stopped working as well as the mouse trackpad on my laptop. I remember that during the installation when it asked if I wanted to keep the old sound configuration file, I clicked yes. So is there I way to fix/reinstall the sound driver and the tackpad? In the sound hardware setting window, no device is listed. I'm pretty sure that my hardwares work on ubuntu 9.10 as the sound and trackpad work fine using the ubuntu 9.10 live CD.
lspci:
Code:

As a "computer expert" providing assistance to my friends, I always find myself asking "what did you do?" and the reply is often "Nothing! The thing just stopped working". I'm having this kind of experience with myself right now. My SB0570/CA0106 setup that has worked in lots of Suse releases stopped working. It is silent. I dualboot with windows 7 and there the sound works IF I turn off the computer so that the soundcard can reset itself after using OpenSuse. Otherwise, Windows is silent too.
I installed the glibc pathes for 11.3. I have downgraded them and rebooted: No change so that's probably not it. Otherwise no changes where made to that OS that I'm aware of. I ran alsa-info and uploaded it here : [URL].
I have tried speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
No error messages and no sound. I have tried it from the console without kde so that is not it. What would be the best way to completely reset sound configuration and start over? I had sound working on 11.3 two days ago.

Just upgraded from v11.0 to v11.2, in fact its still updating the update. I had a number of web apps in folders in my htdocs, whic I cannot access at the moment. They are still there, I just cannot Access them. Has anyone struck the same problem. I know I had this problem about 12 years ago, but being older and senile I cannot remeber what exactly it was. Real important as it contains php scripts which create xml data files for upload to web pages, so would like a quick fix if possible?

After having updated unconditionally all packages in Kde-desktop-factory-repository to get the latest version 4.4.4, I can no longer connect to the Internet through Knetworkmanager. I receive the the following message from a pop-up window when clicking on the Knetworkmanager icon

I just upgraded from Suse 10.x to 11.2. Unfortunately, I didn't use 10.2 much and I('m a bit overwhelmed by the upgrade. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
After my upgrade, I lost Internet access. I don't really know my way around too well, but I did try to ping my router, but had no success. (Although I can ping 127.0.0.1).
I'm guessing that this means network access is not configured, although it looks OK to me.

Under hardware I have 3 devices, the first is RS880 Audio Device (Radeon HD 4200) this one has no sound at all when I click test speakers. Then I have quickcam comm STX and then I have Internal Audio which works by clicking on test speakers.. I have no clue of where to start to fix this but reinstall everything again.

get my sound working again. It worked on my 11.2 installation although I had some problems then too.
The installation I use is running in vmware 2.0. It's running on a laptop which I use for my company. Since the company only support xp I don't want to overwrite that installation with opensuse. Since I like opensuse personally I use it within vmware for my personal purposes (during evenings/weekends). Beside I have opensuse running on physical hw for file/printing/mail purposes which is used by the whole family.
The sound 11.3 produces is garbled. I did followed the advice in 'SDB:Audio troubleshooting'. What I notice is that speaker-test is producing this output:
Code:
speaker-test 1.0.23
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)

so here I go I'm looking at upgrading from my onboard sound on my Dell Optiplex Gx620 to either a Sound Blaster Audigy SE by Creative, or an Asus Xonar DG (I've read bad things about this card so any experience of this under 11.4 would be fantastic).
I need low profile size cards as my little Dell is the Desktop variety. I'm not fussed about the bracket, I normally take them off if there's no LP Bracket in the box It's main use will be playback of lots of music as well as some movies. The sound is going to my Sherwood Hi-Fi amplifier, so just a better output is what I'm looking for, to make music a bit more enjoyable

I recently freshly installed Debian 8 (stable) XFCE.Everything was working fine. I installed Skype (using the instructions in the Debian wiki) and that worked no problem. I then installed libavcodec56-extra (just to have the extra codecs ready in case needed), and Synaptic also installed the i386 version also. After that, no sound (anywhere at all).I reinstalled libavcodec-56 (and the i386 version) to try to rectify the problem, but the sound has not returned.
As per a google seacrh, i installed pulse audio. This showed me that the the 'levels' were moving in line with the sounds which should have been playing, but no amount of tweaking managed to get the sound to come out. I have Mint installed on the same machine and the sound works fine here so i know for sure it is not a hardware issue.

The startup sound just desappeared. The Gnome Login Sound is still on the list of starting programs and the command is right (/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play id=desktop-login description=GNOME Login). What makes it more weird is, that it works fine on all other users. I started to suffer from this problem since I tried to change the sound (I have done it before with no problems). At the same time with changing the startup sound I installed PulseAudio volume control. Could these things have something doing with my startup sound desappearence?

I have connected the PC to an amplifier via optical cable. Everything was working fine. Suddenly, I lost sound! The last things I was doing was extracting some CDs by Sound Juicer and I installed a program named setcd. I thought it was the new software conflicting, so I uninstalled it. However, still no sound. I check the sound settings and find to be the same as before.

I upgraded to Maverick things generally went well - but I noticed TWO sound controls and removed one - later after a reboot I no longer have any. It will appear once I click on System/Preferences/Sound, but otherwise it doesn't show up on the desktop bar. I checked under the Add to Panel feature but no luck - any ideas how to get it back?

Desktop lost (Cinnamon 2.2.16 for me) after a recent dist-upgrade in Sid. I'm new to Sid, so is this normal?
Here's what happened:
Code: Select allsudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Code: Select allCalculating upgrade... The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
x11-apps x11-session-utils xinit
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
Done
[Code] ....
I also have run
Code: Select allsudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get install task-cinnamon-desktop
but it says something to the effect that task-cinnamon-desktop has been moved out of incoming, and that it's unable to install since I have held broken packages.

I have 2 machines with ubuntu (now 9.10) and 2 with XP. After upgrading the ubuntu machines to 9.10 my wired LAN does not let me connect between the linux and MS machines. They did before the upgrade. Where and what should I check to see why the ubuntu machines cannot connect to each other or to the XP machines?I have looked at the network connections and it shows 'auto eth0', last used 'never'. I select the auto eth0 and click on the edit tab and the wired tab shows a MAC address and MTU is set to automatic. The 802.1x Security tab shows it not checked and grayed out. The ipv4 settings tab shows 'automatic'. The ipv6 settings tab shows 'ignore'.
When I click on the Places/Network, the Windows Network icon comes up. When I click on it, I get the MSHOME icon and the WORKGROUP icon. When I click on either of them I get message saying "Opening MSHOME" and then the message 'unable to mount, failed to retrieve share list from server'. The same thing happens when I click the WORKGROUP icon.
