Jun 23, 2011

When i open dolphin and go to my flash drive, the files wont delete. When i delete them it keeps coming back. I already checked permissions as well.

I had it in during installation but didn't install it to there. Is that the issue?
If so how will I delete the folders?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Delete Files From Flash Drive Without Reformatting

Nov 7, 2010

When I try to delete files form my flash drive, the file picture goes away, but the actual data does not. Lets say I put a 900mb file on my 4gb flash drive, then I delete it. It will still ll me that only 3100MB are left in free space. If I try to add more than that it tells me the drive is full. I keep reformatting and reformatting into all different types on file systems but nothing works.

Ubuntu :: Delete Files On Flash Drive "locked"?

Jun 6, 2010

I got a free flash drive from Columbia College that has some files I want to remove. I did the right click thing and they are read only. I tried to change to read and write but I got. Sorry, could not change the permissions of "ColumbiaCollegeViewbook.pdf": Error setting permissions: Read-only file system

Now this thing only shows up as 5.4 MB Yea that is right Megabytes! But I have a plan for it. So is there any way to get the files off so I can put mine on it?

OpenSUSE :: How To Create Bootable Flash Drive

Feb 26, 2010

I'm just interested if there does exist any utility for creating bootable flash drives? I mean, if I could make somehow LiveCD with KDE desktop on openSUSE? I used Ubuntu and it had it's own utility with nice GUI, it just needed any bootable .ISO file or bootable CD/DVD and it created LiveCD on USB flash drive. So is there any chance to find something similar?

I work in a computer service center and it'll be very helpful (I think) to have bootable USB Flash dive with operating system to log into dead operating system partitions. Of course I have Windows LiveCD, but it has as much bugs as it's parent big brother.Oh, I forget to post my operating system versio. I'm using openSUSE 11.2 x64 with KDE version 4.3.5

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Windows 7 Ate Usb Flash Drive?

Nov 23, 2010

I had a USB flash drive that was working perfectly well with my openSUSE 11.3 laptop and my openSUSE 11.1 work desktop. That was until I was copying some files onto a friends Windows 7 laptop when it detected some errors and "fixed" them. Now when I plug the flash drive into my laptop I can read files but I can't write or erase. The mount output looks sane

Code:
/dev/sdb on /media/REMOVABLE type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,utf8,shortname=mixed,flush)
But it looks like the file system is mounted read only

SUSE :: Possible To Install OpenSUSE On A USB Flash Drive?

May 12, 2009

I want to install OpenSUSE on a netbook I have that's currently running Mandriva.
I know often with a distro you can run the LiveCD/Live USB version from a USB Flash Drive. I understand maybe I can do that but want I want to do is do an actual install. Is this possible?
I assume I'd need to download the distro to my netbook under Mandriva and then after do an install and choose the USB Flash Drive after inserted as the hard drive to install to. Then when I boot up the computer I'd just choose the USB Drive as the bootup drive.
Is this possible though? Would it damage my Mandriva install? Like I said I know I can use the USB Flash Drive likely as a bootup/Live CD type of solution but since I will be using it semi-regularly and saving data at times I'd like to use it simply like another hard drive. Is this possible?

General :: Installing OpenSUSE 11.2 - Using A Flash Drive

Jan 6, 2010

I have a bit of a "problem" you can say. I have a computer with no cd/dvd drive nor a floppy drive. It does however have USB ports and ability to boot from LAN or USB-FDD, USB-CDROM, USB-HDD in the Bios setup menu.

I've been searching for a way to install openSUSE 11.2 on this computer using a flash drive I have but I'm not being able to even after following a number of suggestions from posts on the internet.
Anyone have any idea on what I should do?

OpenSUSE :: Accessing A Usb Flash Drive - Media Won't Open

Sep 19, 2010

I don't know why, but all of a sudden when I plug in a Corsair flash drive with a fat32 files system, it registers on the notifier, but when I try to open it in Dolphin, Dolphin opens in the /home/documents folder. Ditto when I try it as root. Media won't open to anything, and when I click on the Corsair listing in the folders on the left side of Dolphin, I get the error message: unknown file system 'vfat'. I have used this drive for over a year with no previous problems, and can access it in 11.3 on my laptop, so I suspect that a setting or something in my system has changed.

OpenSUSE Install :: Get A Flash Drive To Automount When Plug In?

Oct 30, 2010

Got an old SUSE box from a friend, installed 11.3, got a few items: 1. didn't see any prompts to enter monitor info during install, control center shows as generic. Read about 'sax2' (hope that's right) but can't find it on my system or in the add-ons image. Do I need to hack monitor.conf? how? 2. installation aborted when trying to load 'textlive'.3. going into control center->mouse, the display quivers a little then I get kicked back out to the login prompt. 4. how to get kaffeine to process flv files? 5. how to get a flash drive to automount when I plug it in? I can manually mount ok. I guess that's about all for now.

OpenSUSE Install :: Booting From Flash Drive Or Internet?

I recently bought a barebones computer kit and I need an operating system. Upon recommendation, I am considering openSUSE. Further I did not order a disc drive with my computer. This means that to boot openSUSE my only real option would be from a flash drive.

I have found an introduction on how to do it with ubuntu:

I am interested to know if I can do a similar thing with openSUSE.

Ubuntu Installation :: Forced To Use Flash Drive As Boot Drive

Jun 11, 2011

Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.

I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.

Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

Here's what I got:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS880 Host Bridge
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Toshiba America Info Systems Device 9602
00:06.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 PCI to PCI bridge (PCIE port 2)

Installation :: 8GB Flash Drive Because My D Drive Doesn't Read DVDs?

Jun 20, 2010

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

OpenSUSE Install :: Multiple Machine Flash Drive Install Planning?

Jun 18, 2010

I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?

Fedora :: Can't Delete Certain Files From A Mac Drive?

Jan 27, 2010

I am using FC11 and have an external USB drive attached which was originally formatted and used with OS X. I'm pretty sure it's an HFS+ filesystem, but fdisk-l simply reports "unknown". I moved a ton of files to it from an older OS X drive, including a bunch of backups that were done with Time Machine in OS X.

Now I've moved them all back to where I want them (onto an EXT2 formatted drive) and I'm trying to clear those Time Machine files off the HFS+. The drive will ultimately be used with a Mac, so I don't want to wipe the whole disk (aside from the fact I have a ton of other stuff on there that I don't want to move).

The problem is that I cannot get FC11 to delete the Time Machine files. When I try to delete the top level folder ('rm -rf topfolder'), the command looks like it's running (and goes load crazy on the CPU), but I left it running all night, then cancelled it this morning, no files were deleted. It just sits there. When I try to delete folders a little lower in the tree using 'rm -rf myfolder' I get an error telling me the folder is not empty. When I go down to the lowest level folder, I can only find DS_Store and .localized files in it. The properties are rather odd... output of ls -als is this:
