OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.3 Gnome Disable Right-click On Mouse
Aug 4, 2010
I was browsing the Internets trying to figure out how to completely disable the right-click button on my mouse. I am running openSUSE 11.3 with just Gnome and using a basic USB Dell model mouse with a scroll wheel. I am creating a Kiosk image and I have everything locked down except when a user is in Firefox they can still use the right-click button to bring up the menu to Bookmark this page and Save Page As, etc (If you right-click a webpage in Firefox you'll see what I'm talking about). I thought I could find an add-on for Firefox to disable this behavior but no such luck. I did find some references for Debian and Fedora, other distros besides openSUSE where you can modify the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to disable the right mouse button. When I look in that directory on my openSUSE 11.3 system I just see /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install.
how can I disable the right-click ability on my mouse? This is the last step and I'll have a nice locked down Kiosk image ready to go running openSUSE 11.3.

I'm having minor, but very annoying, issue in Kubuntu 9.10. Recently I installed the Gnome desktop to see if certain bugs I was experiencing were KDE-centric. I have since uninstalled Gnome (and reconfigured my audio drivers and reinstalled wicd, all of which was made short shrift of by Gnome), but one thing I can't get rid of is this annoying drum click sound in certain applications. All extension buttons in my browser now make the click sound, as well as the TrueCrypt GUI.
I know this is a very minor issue, but I've always configured my operating systems with absolutely no system sounds (only audio and video playback), so I'm finding this particularly distracting. Right now, the only option I have is to mute PCM volume, which also mutes streaming audio and video in my browser...
I'm at my wit's end. I have all sound notifications turned off in system settings (though there were relatively few to begin with in KDE). there's a magic sudo code I can cast to exorcise my computer of mouse click sounds.

I try to configure mouse click interval since a single click is recognized as double click by doing it from KDE mouse configuration in system settings; but my attempt doesn't work even (I set the click interval to 2 sec, but doesn't change anything). What is the best way to do this in slackware?

Here's a summary of my problem: When using Skype, it's possible to close the gui of the application only. When doing this, the Skype process itself doesn't close; it hides in gnome-panel's notification-area.
Now, when opening the Skype application again (e.g. by clicking on a Skype launcher), Skype starts a whole new process. This is shown to the user as a new Skype tray icon being generated, as well as a new gui window being created.
What I'd like to do is as follows:
I'd like to replace the Skype launcher with a script that would * recognize if there is a Skype process running if yes, bring up that * instance of Skype if not, start Skype normally
Now, I've read some of the source code of gnome-panel to try and see how it's done. From what I've gathered, a button_press_event is bound to some function that probably (am unsure of this) sends a signal of some kind to Skype.
Very similar to this thread, except for Skype and without wmctrl (does not work with Skype): HOWTO: Make a launcher restore an open window (dock-like) [URL]

OS: OpenSUSE 11.4 KDE x86_64
Mouse: MS Notebook Optical 3000, with left, right buttons and a vertical scroll wheel in the middle
How do I configure or set up mouse action such that an option to delete or move to trash is also included when hitting the right mouse button? As shown below, the "standard menu" does not include this action:
Right clicking desktop > Desktop Settings > Plasma Desktop Shell
Middle button: Paste
Left button: Standard Menu (std. menu/application launcher/paste/switch windows/switch activity/switch desktop)
Vertical scroll: Switch desktop
Right button: Standard Menu

when i click my mouse on something, it sometimes registers as two clicks. it doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to be annoying. for example, when i click a videos video to pause it, it often opens into fullscreen (which you normally click twice to do). also, in the url bar of chromium, i can't select the entire url by clicking. i now need to use ctrl+a. that's also because when i try to select the url, the highlight randomly disappears.
if i have multiple windows open, my click on the first "x" of the top-most window also closes the next window. i'm on linux mint 10. it's not really important, but it drives me crazy sometimes when my mouse doesn't work the way i want it to.

About a week ago I installed some updates. What they were I don't remember. After I did that my mouse started acting up. Now about half the time when I single click it registers as a double click. Also when I click and drag to select text anywhere it'll randomly do another click screwing up that process.
So far I think the problem is when I press the left mouse button it registers the left click and then when I release, it randomly registers another left click.
The mouse itself works fine if I take it to another PC that's using windows.
OS: Ubuntu 9.10 64bit

Not sure if this goes here or the hardware section. I've added another sata drive to my system formatted to Ext4, but i have to put in my password for root priveliges (spell?) to access it. I can understand from a security point of view about the password, but there is no way to create new folders or even copy/paste data to it, as the options are not available with the right/click mouse. My external USB drive requires no password, and i can do all the usual functions with it, but not so with the internal sata drive. Is there a way to enable the internal drive for 'normal' operations.

I want the "search" button on my mouse to be a middle click. In my .xbindkeysrc file I have
Code: "xte 'keydown Control_L' 'mouseclick 1' 'keyup Control_L'"# m:225 but it still just selects the google search bar on firefox. Using xev, it shows Code: KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2600001, root 0xb4, subw 0x0, time 166414200, (1135,637), root:(1139,660), state 0x10, keycode 225 (keysym 0x1008ff1b, XF86Search), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False that means its seen as a keyboard button 225 right?
I tried doing something like Code: "konqueror" m:225 to test it, but nothing. Something is overwriting its function. In Configure Desktop > Keyboard & Mouse > shortcut stuff, and didn't see the search button used anywhere.

Since I enjoyed Gnome shell with Ubuntu 9.10 (but Ubuntu runs too slow on this computer for my druthers), I thought it would be fun to check out gnome shell on 11.3. I thought that since my 11.3 has gnome 2.30, that the gnome shell in the software manager would be a concomitant version, so I installed it. I then followed the directions given in the second posting of Enabling Gnome Shell in 11.3?
When I logged back in, I selected Gnome 3 Preview [even though I hadn't thought that that was what I'd installed -- (has openSUSE retired all older versions of Gnome shell?)]. The desktop won't boot (I don't know what the correct way of saying it is). The splash shows, but the icons just intermittently flash off and on at random intervals, never quite making it all the way "on." When I right click the bottom of the screen, I can select "terminal" (when I can accurately coordinate my double-click with the random, intermittent flashing), but then the terminal also does the random, intermittent flashing as well. So I can never get anything typed in. When I reboot, there's no login box.

I have researched this particular problem for a couple of days now, and have explored some of the suggested solutions without success, other than learning much more about Linux. I am hoping someone can offer some good advice.I am working on a kiosk right now and as part of the application, I need to disable the Print Screen keyboard button. I have used 'xmodmap' to map keycode 111 to NoSymbol, but that is not stopping the Snapshot dialog from appearing. I am using OpenSuSE 10.3 with a GNOME desktop on an IBM PC with a Logitech USB keyboard. I have tried swapping the keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard to see if that was the problem, but it was not.
The strange thing is that when I use VNC 4.1.3 Free Edition to remote into this system from another IBM PC (Windows XP Pro OS), I am able to use the xmodmap -e "keycode 111 =NoSymbol" command to successfully prevent the Snapshot dialog from appearing. Is there some kind of keyboard mapping override or shortcut mapping going on here when I am logged into the Linux box locally, but is not happening remotely?

Seeing this on two systems that went through F13-F14 upgrade.
version: gnome-applets-2.32.0-1.fc14.x86_64
symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?

just want to report "Right Mouse Click Freeze" on Ubuntu 10.10. When I click on anything with my right mouse button to open options menu it freezes and does not open menu. Sometimes when I shake my mouse left/right a bit it opens that menu, but this does not work always. It seems like xserver issue, but I'm not sure since I'm not expert in linux yet. It's very annoying issue that I would like to resolve asap.
My System Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Western Digital 250 GB Hard Drive

I always accidentally release right mouse button in any right click menu, so it automatically selects one of highlighted item in this menu. It's mostly the first item, so as example, if I am watching ..... video, and I right click somewhere in the page background, then release the mouse, it makes my browser go BACK one page, because BACK is first item in right click menu in chrome...
Also I would like it to make it unable to right click in right click menu to press items in the menu... In other words, right click in right click menu has the same behavior like left click, but I want to disable it. I want it just like in MS windows, where when you click with right click in right click menu it does nothing. I have so many accidents with this right click menu.

I'm on a new netbook using Ubuntu 9.10 and I cannot figure out how to disable tap-to-click on my touchpad. I figured it would be simple enough to use SHMConfig, however; every post I've seen says they have something similar to this in xorg.conf
Code: Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
EndSection Instead, I have this ...
Code: Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
End Section
I have tried simply changing the driver entry to "synaptics," however when I run SHMconfig it says the driver hasn't been loaded.

I have been searching for a way to disable middle click in Ubuntu, but all the websites I came across say to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. but when I open that file in Gedit there is no input device section as described in post #3 @ [URL] all I have in xorg.conf is
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
[Code]....
I hate the middle click paste feature as I'm always accidentally pasting text in documents.

I tried to follow some internet instructions on how to disable the wheel click (that paste the clipboard contents) but I still can't make it work. I tried to add a button mapping to X11 conf file:
Option "ButtonMapping" "1 1 3 4 5"
I also tried by creating a hal policy:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2"> <device>
<match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.mouse">
<match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name" string="Linux">
<merge key="input.x11_options.ButtonMapping" type="string">1 2 3 4 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0</merge>
</match> </match> </device> </deviceinfo>
But nothing seems to disable the wheel click.
I am using Xfce 4.6.1 with Slackware 13.0. My Mouse is a Microsoft. IntelliMouse USB PS/2 compatible.
