Jun 26, 2010can we copy the RPM files which have been downloaded when we install software from online repository. If we can, where is the location of the folder that store them?

Jan 5, 2011I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

Jun 8, 2011upon browsing the home folder in my ubuntu system, i came across a hidden cache folder..
it occupied around 700 mb of space..and im falling short of space..
can i delete the contents in the folder? are they safe to delete?

Apr 27, 2010I've setup both a http server and svn server and have a SVN project residing in the "/srv/svn/kdrepos/THOR/" directory. I would like this project to automatically do a checkout into the /srv/www/htdocs/ on update/commit. Is this in any way possiblely? Some sites (xp-dev) for example offer an option to have a repository automatically 'added' to a webserver. Does anyone know how is done? I'd xp-dev if it wasn't for the fact that I also need full access rights on the machine

Jul 26, 2010I manage a computer remotely in a different country. The last upgrade I did (to openSUSE 11.2) seems to have had one issue that I didn't work out until later. I am unable to "Online Update" or "Software Manage" the system. Whenever I do I get the following error:

I have been through a number of attempted fixes via the thread 434687-software-repository-corruption but have not managed to resolve the issue. There is no one at the location that could repeat the "update" to hopefully fix the issue that way. I have a copy of the 11.2 DVD iso file on the remote computer. Is there some way that I can get the repository DB rebuilt or reinstalled so that I can then install other software and do Online Updates? Whatever I try has to be doable with the system running so that I can OpenVPN connect and issue commands remotely.
General :: Apt-cache - Wouldn't Show That A Package In Repository That Apt Has Never Heard Of Depends On It?
Dec 4, 2009When using apt-cache to find the reverse depends of a package, it would only show dependencies for packages in repositories that you have added wouldn't it? It wouldn't show that a package in a repository that your apt has never heard of depends on it?
I'm a slackware guy and don't use apt but am helping someone else and I almost told them that before I realized that I just made it up out of the blue.

Feb 1, 2010I have recently reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 in my Compaq Notebook. I have a problem. In my Desktop, I have more than 4 GB of packages installed. As we all know, I do not need to download them again in my Laptop, and can simply add them with "sudo dpkg -i * *.deb" command. But, I do not want to install them all, and want to pick up only a few. So, is there a way, that I can set the Folder (after copying it to the Laptop) as my Repository, I mean, wheneven I seek to install a Package using Add/Remove or Synaptic or apt-get system, they are installed from the Folder instead of from the Internet? (I have all dependencies installed for each application).

Feb 17, 2010i was looking for a way to stop my menus taking a few seconds to load my icons when i first open them and found a few guides suggesting using the gtk-upate-icon-cache command, but with the any colour you like icon theme i'm using (stored in my home folder .icons directory) i kept getting a "gtk-update-icon-cache: The generated cache was invalid." fault i used the inbuilt facility in the acyl script to copy the icons to the usr/share/icons directory and tried the command again, this time using sudo gtk-update-icon-cache --force --ignore-theme-index /usr/share/icons/ACYL_Icon_Theme_0.8.1/ but i still get the same error. i tried with several of the custom icon themes i've installed and only 1 of the first 7 or 8 i tried successfully created the cache.

Sep 1, 2010I'm getting a weird situation where even though I updated an image in a folder for a website in apache, it's still showing the old image. And yes, I checked it in multiple browsers and on diff. computers. (Apache is in a virtualbox OS)
Here's what I've done:
1. Checked it in firefox on the host, cleared cache, reloaded
2. Restarted apache
3. Checked it in konqueror for first time, still showing old version
4. Checked it in the actual file folder and it's correct there
5. Checked it for first time on virtual machine's OS in its firefox, and it shows the wrong/old image

Mar 19, 2011I thought about moving the firefox cache directory to /tmp, as I am moving /tmp to the ram, since I just got an SSD, and move off this write-hungry feature.However, with Firefox 4 beta 12 (shipping with 11.4 x86_64), when I get in about:config, there is just no option browser.cache.disk.parent_directory, which you would use to configure this.I searched a bit and it seems that this is still intended to be on Firefox in v.4.I might as well downgrade to 3.x for the moment. I see there is an RC available of v.4, but no package of it ready in repos.By the way, any thoughts on putting the firefox cache on ram? I know it will flush it at reboot! But the alternatives are:
-leave it on ssd (wear it)
-put it on hdd (so slow)
-disable cache

I can add icons to the Desktop and Taskbar but no in this Folder View on the Desktop (BTW: Is this Panel called "Folder View applet"?)
If I try to move a icon from Desktop to this Panel it is not moved in this panel it is placed behind this Panel...
And how can I get more than one of this panels for example one displays the Desktop folder other the home dir ...

Oct 15, 2010It appears I have gotten a bug when I try to update 11.0 or download even a update foe firefox. When I tried to see if there were any updates it said it could not do it and put up a screen stating the following. File'/repodata/repomd.xml/' not found on medium [URL]. Is there a way to fix this problem? I am a 66year old quy who is trying to learn the ins and outs of Lenox so please keep it simple.

everything else ext4 and my storage drive has xfs.
Anytime I need to do a reset, whatever is in the cache is unreadable afterward. I like to avoid this. The best would be not to have a reset, but sometimes it just happens. Can I do that?

I've attempted some of the suggestions and either I've had difficulties following instructions (noob alert!) or the solution didn't work for another reason. any offers on improving online playback, in particular; should I get a new graphics card, what would be my best option with limited funds (<50) when I want to be able to watch streams online smoothly but not play games/edit video. Efficient rather than powerful?

Oct 4, 2010After a lot of work I succeeded in making my Icon 225 Mobile Broadband working under Linux, so I immediately took advantage of this by updating my system.But unfortunately not everything went well. I have to say something:in Linux when you solved a problem another one pops up. And this is what happened to me. The first problem was the following error message: PackageKit Error repo-not-available: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium [URL]
It seems that in the Online update system there is a error: or the address is wrong or something is not working as it should be. Anyway I got over it and the system started to download the updates and so on. At the end the system asked me to reboot and I did it. Unfortunately a cold shower was waiting me : the KDE interface did not work anymore, the only thing I could see was something like a fog all around the video. The mouse cursor was a dark square. I was still able to hear the welcome sound so I deduced that only the graphic interface was corrupted. I rebooted again and when the system show me the booting choices:
1) Desktop opensuse 11.3-2.6.34.7-0.3
2) Failsafe opensuse 11.3-2.6.34.7-0.3
3) windows 1
4) windows 2
5) Floppy
I chose this time the second one (I think it is like a safe mode)and fortunately it worked but the system looked like having lost brightness (I think this choice change the card driver). Now I do not know why the KDE inrface got corrupted, because I download everything from the opesuse website, so no strange repository has been installed. I checked in the little manual supplied with the DVD and I found the following suggestion: If the KDE interface got corrupted please try to remove the cache files of the KDE desktop using the following command rm -rf /tmp/kde-user /tmp/ksocket-user

Nov 4, 2010I'm running Opensuse 3 on an EEE PC, and so far had no problems. I brought it to another house today and now Firefox seems to be unable to connect to the network.. Network is working however, as Skype is running fine. Online update won't work either.

Apr 21, 2010On my work computer I installed Opensuse11.2 in VirtualBox. However online update or installs which are downloaded through YAST2 are not working. I get the message "Failed to download media ....." and that's it. I configured the proxy and when using the test proxy button it tells me that the proxy works OK. If I copy the link from yast into Firefox I get to the site of the repositories without problems only Yast cannot connect. Neither from the GUI nor from the console. I had no problems with Opensuse11.0 and previous versions. WHat is the problem?
