I've been reading for days now, but can't find an example to the following. I have an ubuntu server, with two KVM virtual machines running ubuntu jeos. I want each VM to have it's own static IP, plus one IP for the server. How on earth I do that? do I need to create two bridges, one for each machine? and if so, how do I assign static IP to each?
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to set up a Linux box with three ethernet interfaces as a bridge where I can do some packet filtering. I don't want this box to have any IP stack, packets that are allowed through the filter should be forwarded without changes just the way a switch would do it. I have build a kernel with ethernet support but no IP stack. It detects my interfaces, and I can bring them up with the ifconfig or ip commands. But when I try to start a bridge with brctl I get this error message:
can't setup bridge control: Address family not supported by protocol
A google search for that error message gave me no results at all. The command I used was "brctl addbr br", which does work on a full installation. Does brctl require IP support in the kernel? That would be a bit odd I think, since brctl doesn't do anything IP related, everything it does is at lower layers?
Does anybody know what the above message means, and what I might have been doing wrong?
I have spent the last 24 hours trying to work a wireless bridge (a D-Link DAP-1522) into my network configuration. It would connect to our gateway here at home (some 2WIRE piece of garbage AT&T hands out, but I digress), and two computers (an Ubuntu Desktop and an Ubuntu Server) would connect via the bridge.
The bridge SEEMS to connect to the router, and indeed, the Ubuntu Desktop PC is able to access the internet. The server, however, is not, and neither computer can communicate with the other (ping, SSH, etc.) furthermore, the router recognizes the presence of these two computers on some level, but does not seem to know their IP addresses (I assume this is related to the computers' inability to communicate).
Before I get too far into this, here are a few links/items for the sake of clarity. The first is a shoddy diagram of my (proposed) network topology, for all of you out there who, like myself, understand things visually:[url]
This is the output from running "ifconfig eth0" on the Ubuntu Desktop PC, which sits behind the bridge. The PC is connected, and can ping hosts across the Internet, but can only ping the router locally (that is, it can't ping any other device in the house, on either side of the bridge):

The router uses wireless encryption, not MAC addresses, to restrict access/traffic, and all wireless devices (including the bridge) have been provided with the proper credentials. There shouldn't be any devices being denied access on account of their MAC address. In fact, the router's control panel lists the PC and the Server among the recognized devices (even lists their MAC addresses), but provides no IP address and always considers the two computers to be "offline." And yet, I am writing this very post from the Ubuntu PC. Sigh.
I am very comfortable with computers, and reasonably comfortable with Ubuntu/Linux and the Linux command line -- I've been using the operating system for just over a year now -- but networking issues have always been perched right on the edge of my understanding. In short, it's likely this issue has more to do with me than it does with the hardware itself (although the more forums I browse, the more I start to doubt this bridge...).
I set up a bridge device but I can not figure out how to pass parameters into the ifcfg-vmbr0 in particular I need to pass:
maxage
ageing
fd and stp seems to be passed by DELAY=0 and STP=on the others? I have not found anything in the post, tips, docs how could I do?
how to set up a static IP from Ubuntu... Secondly, on some of the tutorials I read, there was something about changing the DNS server IP adresses. I do know what a DNS server is (Courtesy of www.howstuffworks.com ) but I don't understand why the DNS servers must be changed simply because I chose to use a static IP address.. (My PC connects to the internet via a router.. )

I'm a complete noob in this department so please excuse my overwhelming ignorance. The only thing I've managed to succeed at was installing fedora 13. Two things in particular are giving me trouble: 1.)setting up my router and fedora box so that it has a static ip address and 2.)connecting to the fedora box via vncviewer on my laptop.
HERE ARE SOME QUICK SPECS THE DEVICES INVOVLED:
Fedora Box: Intel Pentium 4 2.66GHz, 1GB ram, Fedora 13
Laptop: Toshiba Satellite A505, Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.20GHz, 4GB ram, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

HERE'S WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR:
Setting Static IP
On the fedora 13 box:
1.)Went to Network Connections and added a new connection
2.)Copied mac address from the default connection
3.)On IPv4 tab, added new address: 192.168.0.200 (this is out of the range which my router will assign automatically) netmask 255.255.255.0, set gateway to 198.168.0.1(router's ip on the network)
When I connect to this new connection web pages don't load, etc. but when I'm on the default connection I have no problems.
Connecting With Vnc Viewer
On the fedora 13 box:
1.)System -> Preferences -> Remote Desktop
2.)Under Sharing I checked "Allow other users to view your desktop" and "Allow other users to control your desktop"
3.)Under Security I unchecked "Ask you for confirmation", checked "Require the user to enter this password", and specified a password
On the router
1.)Set up port forwarding for port 5900, TCP only, to the ip address of the fedora box.
On the laptop
1.)Installed VNCViewer
2.)Went to whatsmyip(dot)org to get ip address of router
3.)Tried to connect to that address, port 5900 (ex. ##.##.##.###::5900)
4.)Connection times out everytime.
I recently used this process to connect my Samba network to be able to access and allow Windows XP machines to access my computer on my office network.
For various reasons, all the XP computers on the network are set to fixed (do we say static?) IP addresses with manual DNS. Hence I realised during the Samba setup that I had to set a static IP on my Ubuntu machine similar to my Windows static IP's (ie 192.168.10.?) in order to be able to see the Windows share PC's properly.
Once I set my Ubuntu machine to static IP of 192.168.10.3 with subnet of 255.255.255.0 and gateway of 192.168.0.1 then I was able to access and be accessed by PC's on the network. However I couldn't access the internet after this. I input the DNS server in the edit connections as you can see per the attachment. All these settings (except the IP address obviously) were all now exactly the same as the PC machines, and I thought I'd now be able to access the windows network, as well as have access to the internet, however, even though my wired network is connected there is still no internet access.
I'm using the GUI under network connections to make all these changes if that is important. I can't understand why this doesn't work?
My DHCP setting is disabled in fedora 12 . Previously i was using static IP address. I Want DHCP setting enable, any idea.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have two ethernet NIC's on my debian server. One built-in Realtek [eth0] (attached to internet), and a PCI Nvidia ethernet card [eth1] (attached to my Win7 netbook). I used this guide to setup the bridge: url. It worked when I was behind a router. But when I moved the computer in front of the router, to direct connect to the internet, the internet stopped functioning on any device that I plug into my Nvidia NIC. The name of my bridge is 'br0'. Does anyone know how to fix it, so I can route the internet to my second NIC?

I can get the VPN server running and everything connects fine from the client. I just don't know how to tunnel all the traffic through the VPS because it involves making the bridge which I'm having trouble with. What exactly am I supposed to put in /etc/network/interfaces?

I registered on Godaddy for a domain, and sucessfully setup URL forwarding. When I type in that domain it takes me to my website, but the browser shows the IP address again. Should I not be using "URL forwarding"? I'm guessing I have to do something on my server side saying what domain it is but I don't know which file to change and I am scared to touch anything. Although I'm a programmer, I'm not a network person.
I am trying to open a tunnel for a friend of mine who's isp has blocked a bunch of webpages, so I was thinking I would learn how to since it might come in handy in the future Anyway, so I looked at a couple of videos about going in to network settings and changing the setting to manual and write down the desired IP (in my case 192.168.0.137). Then I went into my router (it's a D-link DI 524) and tried adding my static IP as the DMZ computer. I then restarted, everything looked fine, the router saved the settings and the eth0 still hade the information saved so I wanted to try it out. I just googled "try my ports" and I found a website called [URL]...But no ports worked for me.. I tried double checking everything, checking for errors. I couldn't find anything so I'm guessing you might have a clue!
EDIT: It seemed I had to have a program that actually used the port for it to work.. It's working anyway, so if you could move it to [SOLVED] I'd be happy

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm maintaining a very modest network at home, with OpenSUSE as OS on the server. I got the DHCP and routing working by following the instructions in the wiki. However, every time I run dhclient on the server/router, it appears my own DHCP server assigns an address to the internal network card despite the fact I specifically assigned it to be static using Yast. The situation resolves itself when I restart the network services with the command /etc/init.d/network restart. Otherwise no problem, but it also seems the internal network card gets a "new" IP from my server every time the external card requests one from the ISP. This is more of an issue.

I have 2 NIC's in a box. One of them is external and doesn't matter for this question I don't think.
The other NIC is 192.168.100.3. It hosts an iSCSI Target and SMB Share on my LAN. It's works great.
I have another PC that has NIC at 192.168.100.101 and it hosts my DHCP (Scope: 192.168.100.5-25) server for my LAN.
I have a hardware firewall at 192.168.100.1 and it serves inet to the LAN on a different external connection.
So...
I currently have a WAP (cheap p.o.s. netgear router in WAP mode that keeps overheating). I want to eliminate the WAP device and add a WiFi NIC to the Top PC above.
So, on the first system I would have:
NIC 1: External IP and External Gateway
NIC 2: Static IP 192.168.100.3
Proposed WiFi NIC 3: Static 192.168.100.4
Question:
If I bridge NIC 2 and NIC 3 like this:

Then I simply put the WiFi in Ad Hoc, will another WiFi in Ad Hoc (for example my laptop) be able to "see" 192.168.100.101 (DHCP) & 192.168.100.1 (Gateway) (via WiFI 192.168.100.4 through the bridge to 192.168.100.3 and on to the LAN)?
Also, can the two NIC's be bridge together even though they are the SAME subnet?

I have a Gateway laptop running ubuntu 10.04, and just now have a compaq desktop running windows 7, my laptop has wireless internet connection, it's the only way that i can get it in my room. my desktop has only ethernet plugin.
