Networking :: Manually Determining Ip Address Ranges?
Sep 8, 2009
I am trying to remember the procedure used to determine the ip address range when given a network address and its subnet mask. Does anyone have any documentation on the steps that are done to accomplish this?

I've googled til my brain went boom... So the short story goes; I have lots of ip address ranges in multiple files which need to go into an iptables firewall... Sounds simple right?
Example of files:
1.0.1.0-1.0.1.255
1.0.1.0-1.1.0.255

One of our clients uses a mobile client, which "helo"s with a non-resolvable hostname (which contains the correct IPv4 address in the name but does not resolve). I'd like to be able to config PERMIT "joeblow@mydomain" when the helo-names "*.mobilepool.carrier.net". Can anybody give me a hint how to do this, if it is even possible?Right now it just rejects based on not resolving the HELO name.

Looking at the output of netstat, I'm not seeing a definitive way to tell which torrent connections are clients reaching in to my machine vs my machine reaching out to the world. Is there a clear way to determine which is which?

I have two NIC cards installed, they both go to seperate networks. Occassionally I am not able to establish a connection via eth1. When looking at tcpdump traces I see that Linux is using eth0 hardware port and putting eth1's IP address in the packet to reply to the connection request. When the connections work its when Linux uses eth1's port.

I have been running into network issues lately with my CentOS 5 (installed on AMD Athlon X2 - 64 bit machine about 2 years ago). It was able to connect to the network fine until yesterday when I installed more memory into the machine restarted it.
Upon restart, the boot up was paused at 'Determining IP information for eth0' step for a while and booted with out connecting to the network. I tried restarting the network (/sbin/service network restart), but this is the error message I continuously get: Determining IP information for eth0...PING xxx.1.226.1 (xxx.1.226.1) from xxx.1.226.83 eth0: 56(84) bytes of data

I've seen this pop up a few times on the forum but my setup is slightly different. I have a PC with an ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium motherboard. I've just installed CentOS 5.1. Yes, I know this is ancient, but this is what they're developing on at work. I'm trying to get connected either via ethernet or wireless and neither one works. When I boot the computer to Window XP it does connect on ethernet. Ethernet should be easy so I'm concentrating on that. But I get "Determining IP information for eth0... failed." after a 'service network start'.Here is some other information that was asked on similar threads:
> uname -rmi
2.6.18-53.el5 x86_64 x86_64
> grep eth0 /etc/modprobe.conf

I am trying to connect to the net wirelessly using Slax off my USB stick. I did the best I could using the wireless configure tool but Firefox will not surf - no connection. The configure tool shows that I am 'partly' connected in that it shows signal strength in green but I noticed that there is no entry for IP address. Am I suppose to know this and enter it? In LMDE, I see the IP as 192.168.2.10 and other addresses. Do I need to enter this stuff?

I'm running a fresh install on an intel i7 system on an asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard with the onboard NIC (Marvell Technology pci-e). I know the NIC is working as when I boot into the onboard OS that Asus provides (Asus Express Gate SSD)I have a working net connection.Booting up CentOS hangs at determining IP information for eth0 and eventually fails with the following error:PING xxx.170.30.1 from xxx.170.31.231 eth0: 56(84) bytes of data---xxx.170.30.1 ping statistics ---4 packets transmitted, o received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 2999ms, pipe 3 failed.

Currently my OS is Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Desktop OS and my web server is Apache2. I have a public address 60.x.y.z and my pc local address is 10.x.y.z. I have a web app in my Apache2 which currently run in localhost(10.x.y.z).
I would like to enable the web app so that it could be browse from outside. I know there maybe some port forwarding process and some commands involved in order to do that. But I have no idea on the steps to do that.

Version 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.
So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.
My files are as follows:

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm having problems trying to assign it a static IP address. No matter what I put in the Preferences->Networking area (identifying the interface as Manual)... it still will query DHCP for an address if I run the dhclient command. I'm using to using ubuntu server where I just set the IP in the interfaces config file.

I am running my own Postfix mail server. Some time ago I noticed that most email was rejected because of the server's dynamic IP address. So I got a fixed IP address. However then I noticed that some mails got rejected due to failing the reverse DNS check. So my ISP told me to get a range of IP addresses and they could then create a PTR record for one of those addresses. That is now running but it turns out that the IP address used for the PTR record is a ... dynamic IP address. So Spamhaus PBL rejects my emails again.

I am currently running Debian 6. I would like to know if there is a way and how i would go about blocking a certain IP range from connecting to my server within a certain port range. Say for example.
i want to block ip range 123.123.123.* from connecting to my server on the ports 33000 - 43000. But, i want to allow them to connect on any other port range, and i want to be able to allow connections from my server to the blocked ip range on those same ports. so, blocking incoming only on the above port range.
using iptables.

As awk programmers may know, we can print range of lines with awk, from an initial pattern until a final pattern as follow:
Code:
awk '/Initial_String/,/Final_String/' inputfile
Well, I have this inputfile:
Code:
[code]...
Once having those elements in that way within an array(a[]), I want to be able to manipulate the array (a[]) and copy its elements
to another array (b[]) in different order (all lines joined in a single line separated with commas), as follow:
Code:
Category,Adventure,Titles,Robinson,Crusoe,Saturday,Authors,Daniel-Defoe,Ian-McEwan
Only inserting the missing "array" coding and based and follow the code I've written Not needed to create a new code to do it with other method.

I have a dedicated control computer that can only be accessed with web-browser (with its ip-address). My DHCP-server gives a static ip-address to the control computer (base on its mac-address). Somehow and after some time the control computer looses its ip-address (can't ping to it any more) ... and then I have to reset the control computer to get it to pick up the ip-address ... this is not a good solution since the control computer is not nearby. is there a way to force the control computer to renew its ip-address based on its mac-address

My security software has picked up multiple port scanning detections on my router/network and only the IP addresses are available. Is it possible to find out what the remote mac address is to see if the IP source has been spoofed? I've got a couple of different IP sources which were found scanning my ports.
I don't know if my IP and the remote IP address are on the same network or subnet for that matter which is the reason for my wanting to know what the mac address is to find out if its coming from the same remote machine.
