Hardware :: Ensure A USB External HDD Gets Assigned The Same SCSI Id?
Feb 3, 2009
I have 3 WD External USB hard dives. 2 are the same and are rotated for backup purposes and my system assigns them both to /dev/sdb (one is only plugged in at a time), this is fine. The 3rd drive is used for a different purpose and may or may not be plugged in at the same time as one of the others. How can I make the 3rd drive be allocated to /dev/sdc all of the time whether one of the other drives is plugged in or not?

In my understanding, the way /proc/scsi/scsi gets populated, /proc/paritions also gets populated in the same fashion. i.e. the description for first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi can be seen in the first entry of /proc/partitions and same for rest.
So, With this assumption, in my project, I used to relate first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partitions to get its total size and same for all entries.
But, I observed some differences in following scenario, where
1) The first 4 entries in /proc/scsi/scsi are SAN luns attached to my system and for which the actual device names in /dev/ are sda, sdb, sdc and sdd.
2) The last 4 entries are the internal HDDs on same system. In /dev/, their respective device names are sde, sdf, sdg & sdh.
(Output attached at end of the thread)
But in /proc/partitions, the device order is different.
You can see their respective sizes in /proc/partition output as well.
So, my question is, in this particular scenario, I can't relate the first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partition. i.e. scsi0:00:00:00 is not /dev/sde, because it is actually /dev/sda.
It seems that my assumption is wrong in this scenario.
Is there any way or mechanism to figure out actual device name for an entry in /proc/scsi/scsi in /dev/ directory?
How can my application should relate /proc/scsi/scsi entries with their respective device names and sizes?

Some of our workstations have LTO's attached and they seem to drop off every now and again, the only thing which picks them up again (besides a reboot) is the famous rescan-scsi-bus script from here
The thing is that I'd like non-root users to be able to run this script, which in turn needs root to /proc/scsi/scsi

I have a configuration file for a network device(2100 lines). This device is configurable only over console line. If I copy chunks of those lines into terminal(I use minicom), there will be mistakes (sometimes some characters missing, space characters added etc). Hardware flow control and software flow control doesn't help either. I tried with cu utility, but same issues appeared. There will be mistakes even if I copy in ~100 line parts. What causes those missing/added characters? How to avoid those?

Password strength in Linux can be ensured by setting parameters in /etc/pam.d/common-password file. But these policies apply only for non-root users, when they set password for themselves.s there any way to ensure strength of passwords assigned by root?Example: Normally root can assign passwords like "hello" "password" etc. Is there a way to ensure that passwords assigned by root must contain a special character and a digit as mandatory?

In a research environment how can I ensure that all RPMs / packages that appear on one system will exist on another? I.e. when using rpm -qa all libraries on one system will be there on another. The reason for this is to ensure they are as close as possible. Is there an easy way to do this without dealing with a larger management suite tool?

I'm running succesfully Debian 6.0 after first trying Debian 5.0 and ran into missing partitions. This is solved by using Debian 6.0 (Beta 2).
Now it's NVidia's turn: Under Ubuntu (yes...i know it by now...) you had to install a proprietary driver for NVidia to ensure that 3D was supported. What about Debian? There's nothing like this under Debian? How do i know if 3D is supported?

After moving a website folder on my local development machine to another drive, then moving it back, I got a 403 error. Most of this problem had probably to do with rights that got messed up. After deleting the code and restoring it from SVN, the rights seemed allright. The error stayed however.
The setup is a bit complex, as follows:
I have Ubuntu 10.4 as development machine, trying to mimic the server as much as possible We use Eclipse + SVN and I create all projects in a local folder under my user account In /var/www-vhosts I create folders for each vhost, like this one: test.localhost test.local/index.php: includes the index file of the project
test.local/.htaccess is a dynamic link to the htaccess file in a project subfolder
I get the following error in the apache error log:
The problem seems to be the .htaccess file, or the link to it. When I empty the htaccess, nothing changes When I remove the link, the index-include produces some output (in the apache error log) When I remove the link and replace it with the actual file, I get another error:

Things beyond my control are causing me to rush a bit in getting the website moved. I'm working hard to try and get it done, but something else has come up that SSL Certificate.I know that our website's "basket" area is protected by an SSL certificate to ensure customer information, especially credit info, is secure. With the move to Amazon's service, it looks like I may need to create our own self-signed SSL certificate to ensure the basket area remains secure.
I have found guides that walk through how to make one yourself and configuring apache to allow it, but something else has come to mind. The guides I found don't really indicate where the SSL certificate goes afterwards, and also doesn't suggest which sections should be governed by the certificate (as only the basket section uses it, not anything else). How would I find out that information?

I have been issued 16 IP's my my ISP. Obviously my subnet is 240. is there a way I can take one or any of those IP's and somehow make them into their own network on my end? Really what I am wanting to do is take my 2 DNS servers that are really on the same network far as my assigned subnet and IP's, but take at least one of those IP's and sub-network? it out to the other DNS so it appears to be on another net work. like just simply assign it 192.168.219 255.255.255.255 or something like that.
