View 2 RepliesI have minor problem with upgrading a hard drive. I am running an old pentium lll with two hard drives. On the first hard drive I have two partitions of around 90GB each. On the first partition is installed winXP and on the second partition I have Suse 10.3, both booted by grub and living happily side by side. My second hard drive (which is formatted for windows is only 4GB.
My problem arises when I try to replace the 4GB with a 80Gb hard drive. When I disconnect the 4GB drive the system fails to boot up and complains with error 21.
I have a Toshiba laptop with BIOS that will not recognize USB as a boot medium (I have purchased two USB 'thumb' drives with Distro's that do boot but the BIOS see them as HDD devices!)I did manage to install and boot a distro from the USB HD but ended up with the USB drive having to be connected' to select any of the OS partions, to boot anything.I do realize that somehow, when installing the new distro on the USB drive, I changed the GRUB configuration to be on the USB drive which obviously I did not want, so can

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been scouring the forums and Google for 2 days now and am not sure which track I should follow with my problem, because the GRUB path doesn't seem to be working, nor the fsck. I'd appreciate any insight anyone can provide, as I feel I'm spinning my wheels at this stage.A few days ago, I was transferring files from my Ubuntu server via SFTP to my laptop across my local network. All of a sudden, the transfer quit in the middle of transferring a file and since then, I was unable to FTP or SSH in to the server. I hooked up a monitor to see what was going on and there was only a black screen, so I powered off the server and powered back on.
While booting, the Ubuntu logo screen initially appears, but then goes to black and error messages come up, asking me if I wish to start the degraded RAID. "Gave up waiting for root device" is the message I get and it tells me that /dev/md2 does not exist and drops me to a initramfs shell. When I try to start in degraded RAID, it tells me:
mdadm: create user root not found
mdadm: create group disk not found
[49.702561] raid5: failed to run raid set md2
mdadm: failed to run RUN_ARRAY /dev/md2: Input/output error
mdadm: not enough devices to start the array
I have 4 hard drives in the server, configured as RAID 5.I boot from a Live CD and have a look at the discs.All are said to be healthy, except for the 4th which is said to have some bad sectors.I'm unable to access (or don't properly know how to access) the /boot/grub/menu.1st file to change the root delay parameter, which is what I thought I would try first.
I recently put together a computer with scrap parts that I have. It had no operating system on it at all. I downloaded Ubuntu on a different computer and burned it to a CD (I also verified the hash). I put the disk in and followed the instructions. Then when it wanted me to take the disc out and reboot I did so and clicked ok and it rebooted. I changed the boot order so that 0-HDD was first, and it said that the disk failed and wanted me to put in the system cd. Anybody have any solutions?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook. I have Windows XP home installed. I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition and put it on USB drive by Unetbootin. I booted from usb and it worked perfectly. I then installed Ubuntu to my hard drive from the live desktop and nothing went wrong. Perfect so far. Next, i shut down my netbook and took the usb drive out. I booted my netbook and it started loading Windows XP, didn't ask me if i want to use Ubuntu. I shut down the computer and pressed F5 while booting. It asked me what i want to do. I selected 'go back to OS selection' and i could only choose Windows XP from there. It was the only thing i could choose.

Now, I know I can switch the boot order in the BIOS, which I have, but I'd also like to remove whatever "boot-flag" remains on the drive.I actually have two external hard drives and a thumb drive that do this. When I install it via CD or after running in CD mode and installing from the desktop the system will not boot. 250gig SATA drive.I can't for the life of me get it to boot after installation. It keeps dropping into 'initramfs' I even tried installing "ubuntu-10.04.1-server-amd64" and get the same result.Is it something to do with the SATA drive?

Running 10.10 64bit Kernel 2.6.35-23 I am noticing what I think is a big hiccup in my boot process my drive is mounting at around the 4sec mark then my system pauses for roughly 13 seconds, you can even it see it on the screen a blinking cursor comes up the entire time. Then during the rest of the boot my drive will re-mount at least 4 more times. Then during use of my system there will be random re-mounts throughout the use. Here is the mounting message

I just noticed the pausing recently after an update but have been seeing this re-mounting since install. Are these normal? They dont seem like it to me, and if they are normal why such a long time on the initial mount and every re-mount takes 4-5 seconds. Let me know if I can provide any further info as well.
Approximately 2 and a half years ago, I got a netbook from my Grandfather loaded with Windows XP Home Edition. For some reason it crashed on my and when I booted up my netbook again, it didn't show my anything but black screen.
From that time I wasn't able to use my computer until I discovered ubuntu and used it on my netbook. I, then, downloaded Windows 7 (lite) and got it on my netbook. The only problem that bugs me is that I want ubuntu and windows 7 and I cant because there is less disk space.
I have an 500 GB external HARD DRIVE. I want to be able to boot into UBUNTU using that. Is there a possible way to do it?

It mounts automatically without problem once I am in Ubuntu and I can read/write to it.
My issue is that it won't mount at boot. I get past GRUB and a few seconds later receive an error message giving me an option 'S' to skip, or 'M' to manually mount.
What I noticed is that the logical name for the drive (used sudo lshw -C disk to display) seems to change at each boot.
It goes from /dev/sdb to /dev/sdf and vice versa.
So, I'm thinking this is the problem since I can only add it to /etc/fstab according to what I last saw.
am using Ubuntu 11.04 and disconnected that hard drive to load Debian on a second hard drive. Now when I plug in the Ubuntu drive it will not load. Is this a problem with "grub" and what must I do to boot my original Ubuntu drive?

View 9 Replies View RelatedSomething caused my Fedora 11 system to reboot this evening, only it keeps trying to boot from a CD/DVD. I get to a prompt that says "Boot from CD/DVD" and then it appears just to wait. I can insert my Fedora 11 installation disk and boot from it in rescue mode, and then I can see my entire file system, so I don't think the hard drive has failed. The system just doesn't seem to want to boot from the HD any more. I can get to a command line using the Fedora rescue mode, but I don't know what to do once I'm there.
one additional note. Around a month and a half ago I deleted some files by mistake and wanted to try to recover them. I tried a bunch of approaches that I came across (none worked), and I do remember that one of them had instructions to unmount a portion of the filesystem to protect it from being overwritten before I could recover the files.
Unfortunately, at this point I have no real memory of exactly what I did, but the system has been working fine since then. I would have thought that I had rebooted since then, but it's possible that this is the first time I've rebooted. Could I have unmounted some part of the file system such that it would still by unmounted even when rebooting? How can I check this from the command line I get in rescue mode? (My file system gets mounted under /mnt/sysimage/)

I have installed Kubuntu 9.04 to a USB external Iomega eGo Desktop hard drive (it's 1 terabyte). I've tried installing with my other hard drives attached (sdd) and with them disconnected (sda). The installs went smoothly in both cases but I cannot boot from the USB drive. My BIOS supports booting from various devices including USB. Can this be made to boot? How?

Installation went ok, but whenever I start the Centos it boots from the dvd.iso and force me to install or upgrade it again.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.
