Networking :: Accessing Web Site On Same Network Using Domain Name?
Mar 30, 2010
I find it hard to explain but I will try. I have a small network using CentOS 5.4 with a static ip and I am running a web server which has an local ip of 10.1.10.100 and has the domain name of www.inwoon.net.My problem is I have other computers on the same network and can only access the web server using 10.1.10.100 instead of www.inwoon.net. am finding it to be impossible to test my web site work using external links that call back to my site

In the office there is a local network with samba+openldap PDC. The local domain name is company.net. The company desided to create a corporate Website on a remote hosting and desided that the site's domain should be company.net which is same as local network's domain name. So now it is not possible to reach that corporate website from within the company's local network because, as I guess, bind9 which is installed on above menioned PDC looks for company.net on a local webserver. Is there a possibility to let people from this local network browse the remote site?

I want to restrict a user accessing my ftp site.
1) i can block the user in ftp configuration file
2) i can block the user in PAM or /etc/host.deny
i heard that if pam is denying the user and ftp is allowing the user the user can get the access it means that ftp conf file is stronger than host.deny

Occasionally my machine displays the following warning whenever left to itself for an hour or so. "www.windowsvistatestdrive.com:443 uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate expired on 09/16/2009 10:52 AM. (Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate)"
I am not trying to access this site. It is not always the same url. My machine, described below, is networked to an XP machine which recently had to be recovered after a viral attack. Since I am not usually interested I decline to use the certificate and the warning goes away.

Is it possible to setup apache to normally block an IP from accessing a site until that IP is in a database/file?More or less, I need a login system that another script can add/remove the IPs and the site can be accessed by only those IPs.

I have a Ubuntu Server that is correctly set up and has been working for awhile. It currently has a domain (Registered by GoDaddy) and it is used as the main. I just bought another domain (From GoDaddy) and I want it to connect to the same server but a different section to host a second site completely separate from the first.
So this is how I want it to be setup:
Domain1 = /var/www/
Domain2 = /var/www/website2
When I put Domain1 in the url like www.domain1.com it will connect to /var/www/
When I put Domain2 in the url like www.domain2.com it will connect to /var/www/website2

I am starting to develop websites in Ubuntu. I have set up apache server, php, mysql, and phpmyadmin. I have also set up a local domain for the site. Everything works great with html files, but how do I get Firefox to open .php files instead of trying to save them.

My test server is going well for the past 2 months. I have learned a lot from searching the net for how to's and forums on questions I have. My next task on the to-do list is enabling ssl on my mail server. I have the ssl setup with an automatic redirect from http to https. It is working fine with a minor issue.I have 2 domains and several subdomains on the server. Since I have enabled ssl, it seems for any of the domain/subdomain links I type in with a https://, it takes me to my mail server site. How can I have it set to only one secure link to my mail server?

I would like be able to access packets coming off the network with the hopes of coding a primitive packet sniffer for learning purposes. I would also like to be able to piece together my own packets and send them out on my network. Eventually, I would also like to write a simple firewall so I want the capability to drop packets as well as let them pass. I assume I will have to access the kernel with some system calls to do this, any one have any information or resources that could help me on this project?

I am a complete newbie at web servers, so I installed Ubuntu Server and have a LAMP set up. I have gotten dynamic DNS to link to my domain, and that seems to be working. My domain is 6py7.com. If I try to access my domain from within my home network it links me to my router's main page (192.168.2.1). I have my server set up with a static ip at 192.168.2.100 and have port forwarding set up.
Is there something I missed with the setup of this? I can only access my domain if I use a network outside of my home network, but if I am within my home network the domain name links to the router.

I have a network where several machines are connected through a switch. I'd like all machines to be able to read/write to/from the hard drives of the other machines. for example:
machine1 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine2
machine2 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine1
machine3 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine1
machine3 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine2
etc etc...
all of this reading/writing will be done through the terminal, and programatically. rather than SSHing into a machine to read/write files from it, I'd be happy to set up some 'conventions' on how to access hard drives of various machines. for example:
'hdd1' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.1).
'hdd2' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.2).
'hdd3' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.3).
etc etc...
this way, when I want to read/write a file, its PATH will be something like ~/hdd1/myfile.txt; ~/hdd2/anotherfile.txt;

Today I have tested the networks at several schools in the area, and at the town hall. It is not possible to surf on www on any of these networks using a PC running Linux. My conclusion is that there has to be some kind of filtering of traffic that exclude PC's running Linux. From the same PC I can send and receive email, I can ping and trace (mtr) addresses on www, and I can view webpages that are on servers on the inside of the filtering-gateway. The filter used is InterScan Web Security Virtual Appliance from TrendMicro
I have also demonstrated for the admins at the town hall that using Linux-PC on a "clean" network, surfing is no problem. By doing these small tests I have demonstrated that Linux is not the problem.
Tomorrow I'm going to visit the network providers admins, so that they could see what happens when a PC running Linux tries to access www. What kind of things should I test to document, or find the problems? So far I have just used MTR to document slow respons, wget --no-proxy to document that www hangs and ends time out, ifconfig to show NiC settings, and route.. Could this be a problem with /etc/resolve.conf?
The network provider is the same company that refused to turn on IMAP on the exchange servers, resulting in 3 week without mail at our school. All the other schools had to upgrade Outlook in order to connect to the new exchange-server with MS MAPI settings. MS Gold partners are so nice...

I've been on a quest to enable full routing through my openvpn tunnel between my office and the colo. Masquerading will work, however it will throw off anything key based and makes a lot of things just more difficult and vague in general. Is there an easy way to do this via iptables? I tried using quagga hoping it would magically solve my problems, however it does not seem to do my routing for me . I just did a basic static route within zebra...

I have three locations with a central office connected to two remote locations. At the central office I run on a cisco asa 5505 two site to site vpns. The remote end of the first site is a checkpoint firewall , and the remote end of the second site is racoon on debian. Both sites are up and working. However, where at the first site traffic goes both ways, at the second site it only works from the central office to the remote office.
For example, I can ssh from a host in the central office to a host in the first remote site (through checkpoint firewall,) then ssh back from that host at the remote office to any host in the central office. In contrast, after I ssh from a host in the central office to a host in the second remote office (through racoon), I cannot see the central office hosts (ping the ip address of a central office host, ssh, etc. all fail.) The vpn settings at the central office (the cisco asa 5505) are identical. So it seems to me that some routing magic is missing on the host running racoon at the second remote office. Where would such setting reside? racoon config files? iptables?

I was wondering if there is any way to enable an MS Windows client that is otherwise unable of joining a domain to join a domain controlled by (open)SUSE? Is that inability only for joining a Windows based domain but a client that runs XP Home Edition or similar domain- incapable version of Windows could join a domain if it was controlled by Linux?Pardon my newbie style, but answer doesn't have to be detailed step-by-step, just yes/no answer with some pointers would do. I am not new to linux but new to network services... search engines weren't friendly when asked this question at the search bar...

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 since 2-3 weeks. First I tried live CD and the OS seems to be very good. So i installed it on my laptop. So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed. After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo. With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .

Using my laptop, I'm trying to get onto the local library's wireless network, with zero results so far.Basically, I can see the network, but when NetworkManager tries to connect it just spins for a few minutes and then rejects the connection. (Or the connection is rejected by the router) My wireless connection works fine when connecting to my WPA home network.

Have a domain registered on a public ip. The domain server for the domain is on the same local network as the web server that uses the domain. The web server naturally has a local and public ip address.
The problem is that whenever I try to access the domain from my local network the lookup for the domain fails, as it cannot find the server from the local network. What's the most painless solution to this problem?
TL;DR: need for my domain to be accessible from both my local network and the outside world, now it's only from the outside which is a problem.

I've searched the forums (250 thread limit) for a fix on this, but all the questions seem unanswered or unrelated. My situation is this: I'm running Ubuntu x64 10.10 'Maverick'. I have a cablemodem connection for my Internet access. I have home network running on DD-WRT with the dreadful Linksys WRT54G series router.
My DD-WRT router is 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0.
My Linux box is 192.168.1.61, subnet 255.255.255.0.
I have a VyprVPN connection set up successfully on Linux. Mostly everything works great, speed's fine, latency is what I expect it to be. Except... I also run an SSH server to remotely admin the box at port 22, an Apache server running over SSL at port 7001, and a Transmission web client at port 7002 (only secured by basic HTTP realms auth). All of these things worked before I got the VPN working, I'm of course using NAT at the DD-WRT router.
The endresult I am looking for, is to have the security and protection of the VPN (even if it's only perceived) for everything I do on this machine -- EXCEPT on Apache, the Transmission web panel, and the SSH server, which I want to access from the outside world. I have no firewalls running or configured, not even iptables, not even the SPI firewall on DD-WRT. All connections to the aforementioned services from the outside world timeout coming in to the Linux box. They all work from inside my home network (182.168.1.0/24). In case it's needed, he's my routing:

I am currently working on a project related to packet sniffing which has been implemented using the concept of raw sockets. I am using C language.I am able to decode the following details from the packets received from a local network, like:
source and Destination Mac Address
source and Destination IP Address
source and Destination port no
But I am having trouble in decoding the domain name when an user in the local network is logging onto internet. For eg. if a user in the local network is trying to log on to web using his browser say if he has logged on to url then from the packet I need to get the following details
source Mac Address from which user had logged on
source IP Address from which user had logged on
domain name

I want them all to be accessed via same web site . some of the server in our network are embedded devices.they have their specific utility being hosted on that machine. So the severs are bound to be distributed . I just wanted to know how can I access them via single ip, domain name.

I'm not to sure this is the place I should post this, but couldn't find any place for it to fit. So here is the deal..I am running 10.10 with the standard LAMP setup. I am running a drupal 7 site no problems. What I need to do is run a multi site sub directory. (domain.com/newsite). So far the best I can do is get a directory index of the second site (domain.com/newsite), but cant run the installer. (I did the symbolic link to the doc root of the drupal install.)If I type in the url domain.com/newsite/install.php I get not found. I placed an index.html test page and it renders fine. I think I'm close but just not there yet.
Any ideas from anyone? I can get Sobdomains to work fine on a test mache, but sadly I need the domain/site to work due to lack of DNS support at the moment. I tried to get some info from the drupal forum, but everything always points to subdomin setups. I also posted over there, but it seems like the forums have very little support and are a bit on the slow side.

In short: browsing the internet with domain names does not work. The long version: I've configured my network with DHCP and ifup. Ping works on my internal net and with servers in the internet. Dig work's too! I get the right IP to the requested domain. When i try to access the internet using firefox or even wget i get an DNS error. For example wget is showing the following error: Resolving heise.de... failed: Name or service not known. wget: unable to resolve host address 'heise.de'
Again dig show me the right IP and if i add the entry to /etc/hosts it work's too! I've even tried it with manually setup of ip address, nameserver and default gateway but with the same result. Switching off the firewall has no effect on this problem, too.

At the school i work in i have a server2k3 server that provides a domain to all the windows clients, aswell as a fedora server that acts as an imaging machine and webserver.
Im rather concious of the fact that if for any reason the Server2k3 server was to die there is no backup of active directory, or anything that can take its place whilst a replacement is found.
So is it possible to use a fedora machine with samba as a secondary domain controller? so it can be used as a login server, and has a copy of AD.
