View 3 Replies View RelatedI just set up an old PC as an Ubuntu Server. I've got it all connected, and set up the way I want it...here's the problem I can't access my server as long as I'm attemting to access it from my home IP. I can ssh and ping it from both my phone on 3g and another (non-local) server I have SSH access to. Because of how our apartment is set up, each bedroom has it's own separate ethernet connection. The one in the room next to mine goes unused so I set up my server on it. My ISP is Charter, if that matters.

So I finally successfully installed Ubuntu 10.10, but I can't access my home wireless network. I dual booted with Windows 7, and it detects my local wireless network, asks for the key and connects correctly. In Ubuntu, I have to plug in an ethernet cable to access the internet (like I am now). Ubuntu doesn't detect the network, and I tried "Create New Wireless Network..." up the top right, but it doesn't connect.

But I have two other routers I'm no longer using. Is it possible to use one of them as a wireless access point to extend the range of my current router? If so, what is the general procedure for doing that? My main router is a Verizon Actiontec M424WR. My other unused routers are a D-Link and a Netgear, both of which have wireless capability. The Netgear had a superior range, as I recall.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've used Samba for several years and when it works it's great. Unfortunately from time to time it seems to get messed up and either all the 7 machines on my home network can't be seen or I can't access the shares on some. I have 2 Windows XP computers 4 Kubuntu and one Linux Mint KDE, all the latest versions. I'd rather not plough through all the documentation for Samba, but would really like a "model" smb.conf with a few comments about parts that might have legitimate variants. I have researched this with Google searches many times but have failed to find the information I need in concise form.

I have a desktop machine with two ethernet interfaces, eth0 and eth1. Etho is connected to the cable modem and that seems to be working fine - well, I'm posting here, right? Eth1 is connected to a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point. I have eth1 set to 192.168.1.240 and the AP set to 192.168.1.245 (the default). The desktop runs CentOS and I have dhcpd running, and I have focused on the dhcpd.conf file, which I have changed many times. Here is the latest incarnation:
Code:

# DHCP Server Configuration file.
# see /usr/share/doc/dhcp*/dhcpd.conf.sample

The first is regarding my home network that I've setup. It mainly consists of two laptops, both running fedora. I find myself using rsync, ssh, scp, and the like quite often, but it is very annoying constantly needing to provide a password. This sounds like a job for RSA keys, but is it safe to do so on my laptop I take whenever I travel? If my laptop were to be stolen, my personal and private keys would be available to the thief. Is it instead better to use something like kerberos (which I'm not very familiar with, ie. I've used it at work but never took the time to learn how it works).
This isn't much of an issue with my home network since it is protected behind my router. However, I have the same issue with rsync, and ssh to my work PC. These are the RSA keys I'm worried about if my laptop were to be stolen.
I have spent some time testing out different backup solutions for my small home office during the last weeks, but still haven't found anything that have been working out too well yet. We can definitely work with a non-GUI script if that's what it takes, if only the requirements are fulfilled:
- Upload to Amazon S3 Europe. We get unbelievable slow uploading speed to US, so uploading 400+ GB of data will not be happening anytime this year...
- Incremental backups - only changed files shall be uploaded or we will have a big bill from Amazon in the end of each month..
- Files should not be uploaded in one big per-folder archive. This is not efficient at all, since if we change one file in a subfolder, a huge two-digit GB sized file would have to be uploaded during next backup. Not good for economy again, or traffic overhead on our internet connection.
I am looking to buy a 3 in 1 Printer (Copy, Scan) Sometimes I'd like also to print fotos. Often I will have to scann. Wich brand would you buy and why? Wich has low printing costs and is for home office fast? And bevore all that, do i get the drivers for all functions?

-Server PC (linux, no root access) static and public IP and full Internet access.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.
I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

After installing Fedora next to Ubuntu with a common home-folder, I've had troubles with many different things. When I finally fixed grub2 so I could display all the OSs available, I tried to boot Ubuntu. Then I got three messages, one telling me .ICEauthority wasn't able to upgrade. I've now realized it was because my user in Ubuntu didn't own the home-folder. I typed "sudo chown -R jp:jp /home/jp/" in a shell, and it worked. But when I then logged into fedora, I got the same error messages, so I had to type "su -c chown -R jp:jp /home/jp". Apparently, jp in Fedora isn't the same user as jp in Ubuntu.
How do I make my home folder owned by both?
