I need to backup my /home directory on the HDD. I broke the current ubuntu installation, so I can not just boot up the system without the live CD. Is there any way I can access my user data in /home? I need to back it up so I can reformat/reinstall.

After doing the last update I can only reboot to the BusyBox (intramfs) prompt -pic is attached. Other posts suggest there are some missing modules but I haven't figured it out yet.
There are some files I'd like to save to my external hard drive not to mention my evolution emails, Firefox bookmarks, etc. in case I have to reinstall 9.10.
find these things when I'm booted up using the Live CD? They must be buried somewhere in the file system but haven't been able to find them.

I wanted to be able to access the 24 gig partition from XP.I installed a persistent 10.04 on the 8 gig partition.All ran well for about 3 weeks. Today during boot up I noticed that it had stalled at "creating live session user". I left it there for several minutes and then powered down to retry.Several attempts to boot left me at the same spot.I looked at the boot up messages and noticed this error... "unable to find persistent home media".I don't have a ton of save info on the live user account but I would like to be able to fix this type of problem.

I've done a few sudo apt-get xxx (can't remember the names) since this problem on this HDD and they download fine, so there must be space available. I've tried plugging the HDD into a second HDD, using the second one as a master and trying to access /home but there is nothing in it.
Is there a way to access or mount the internal hard drive using the live CD?

It gets part way through the windows boot (why I think it's still alive) and throws an error about unable to mount boot partition or something like that.I booted into Ubuntu live and cannot see the hard drive when I look in Nautilus. I do see the hard drive when I look in the disk utility. When I do sudo fdisk -l in terminal nothing comes up it just goes back to ubuntuubuntu:~

I have choosen to encrypt Ubuntu 10.10 during installation (no alternate installation). After some time of working properly I get following error message after I put in correct password :
"Could not update ICE authority file /home/surf1/.ICE authority"
When I click "ok" following error message is shown :
"there is a problem with the configurationserver (/usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 finished with status 256)"
When I click this "ok" next error message appears :
"Nautilus could not create following necessary files : home/surf1/Desktop,/home/surf1/.nautilus"
After I click here ok nothing else happen anymore and I get not access to my account and so to my data.
is there a Linux utility that will let me access the Wubi filesystem in a live cd?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy laptop froze up this morning and required a forceful shutdown and since will not boot. it is a new drive in the machine and have to admit I had not tried my old Ubuntu partition since cloning the drive from my one I RMA'd to Western Digital. So I have downloaded 10.10 Desktop version and burnt to a DVD.
If I try and use Nautilus I can not view anything on the WinXP partition but I can access my NTFS Data drive and my old Ubuntu Studio partitions (which I can't boot although I see Grub options.)
If I go via Terminal I can get at least some access though. What Ubuntu is showing as the name looks suspiciously like a Windows serial number. Is it in fact what I registered my Windows with? Once I get into the Win partition I can view contents of C's root. Here I can view the boot.ini file (which all help on the internet I could find claimed had probably got corrupted) but it looks as it should. I can get into Program File and Documents and Settings so some of the drive seems to work (and I should be able to back up my settings, all Docs and data already live on another partition anyway.) But it will not access the WINDOWS folder. This means I can not try replacing stated missing files from WINDOWS/system32.
Is this because either part of WINDOWS has become corrupt? Or the Address Headers for it? Or is there something that locks off Ubuntu from accessing this that I need to change? Seems strange I get nothing at all listed for the WinXP drive on Nautilus but at least some access with Terminal. Is there a Check Disk type program within Ubuntu that can work on NTFS partitions? Last time I checked (fair few months ago now) there wasn't but here's hoping to progress.

Two days ago my Windows 7 just crashed and it doesn't work any more. Using a computer in a Internet point a downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 Live and now I'm running it in my computer. I would like to install Ubuntu definitely on my computer but before I would like to find all my old file from Windows 7. In Places/Computer has only the File System and nothing else. In System/Administration/Disk Utility I can see my 320 GB hard Disk (ATA Samsung HM3200II) but I can't do anything in that. I tried to use the Ubuntu 10.10 live in other computer and this work perfectly, but in this one no. What can I do to right now?

After installing Fedora next to Ubuntu with a common home-folder, I've had troubles with many different things. When I finally fixed grub2 so I could display all the OSs available, I tried to boot Ubuntu. Then I got three messages, one telling me .ICEauthority wasn't able to upgrade. I've now realized it was because my user in Ubuntu didn't own the home-folder. I typed "sudo chown -R jp:jp /home/jp/" in a shell, and it worked. But when I then logged into fedora, I got the same error messages, so I had to type "su -c chown -R jp:jp /home/jp". Apparently, jp in Fedora isn't the same user as jp in Ubuntu.
How do I make my home folder owned by both?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using Edubuntu 10.04 in my classroom. I use an administrator account. There are about 8 student accounts on the computer, created as desktop users. I would like to login with my account and be able to view, create, and delete files in the students' home directories. However, I can't figure out how I would give myself this permission.
I've tried sudo chmod, but that won't work, because I'm not the owner of those files.
I've tried sudo chown, but that won't work, because the students need to be owners of their own directories.
So, what is the tactic to use here?
I've upgraded to my old dell from Xubuntu 9.10 to Xubuntu 10.04 and set up separate /home partition. I chose to encrypt the /home folder when I installed. I'm wondering if that's the quick answer for why I can no longer sftp from my Ubuntu Jaunty laptop. Both machines are on my desk, and I've been happily using ssh to get files between them before this. The Xubuntu machine has openssh server and client installed, the Jaunty machine has only ever had only the ssh client. Now I get a popup saying "Could not open location ..." and the sftp address, and "Host key verification failed." I've not done much with this new install, so I don't mind just re-installing again. I don't need an ecrypted /home, but I do want very much to be able to continue to ssh into that machine. Is it my encrypted /home that's causing this?

I've got it all connected, and set up the way I want it...here's the problem I can't access my server as long as I'm attemting to access it from my home IP. I can ssh and ping it from both my phone on 3g and another (non-local) server I have SSH access to. Because of how our apartment is set up, each bedroom has it's own separate ethernet connection. The one in the room next to mine goes unused so I set up my server on it. My ISP is Charter, if that matters.

I tried upgrading to 10.04, and now when it boots it just goes into a grub2 terminal and doesn't display a boot menu. I tried re-installing grub2 from the live cd, but that didn't do anything. I figured if I've hosed the last install I'll install from scratch, but I can't even access my files from the live cd! I did a bit of searching and everyone seems to just encrypt ~/Private, whereas I've encrypted the whole home directory. So much for security... In the live cd, it has a readme.txt and says to type "ecryptfs-mount-private" to access the files, but it just gives the error "ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly". What do I do?

Usually, I don't do an 'upgrade', but a fresh re-install. I have a separate /home partition, so normally this works just fine. However, my home directory is encrypted (a feature that was introduced with 9.10, I believe).
So, if I whack the system partition and do a fresh reinstall there, will the new install still be able to read my home directory? Or do I need to save a key file from somewhere?
How can I set my permissions so I can access my home partition? (I am the sole user.)
