Networking :: Set Up Ralink RT2051 USB Adapter On CentOS 5.3?
May 10, 2009
I'm here because maybe this is a rare situation: I'm trying to mount a home server using a wireless card.
This is the output of my /sbin/lsusb code...
I'm trying to connect with this card but I don't know how.

I have a rt2500 wireless USB adapter ( WLI-U2-KG54-AI ). I tried to use it on 2 computers loaded with Ubuntu 9.10. It worked well in WEP mode, but I am now trying to connect to a WPA router and the connection fails (the network manager icon keeps rolling forever). WPA works well on those machines when using another wireless adapter (not rt2500 based). This adapter also works well with WPA under windows. Is this device supposed to work with Ubuntu in WPA mode

I just did a Wheezy reinstall (I just started using LVM on LUKS), but my Ralink RT5370 usb wireless adapter wouldn't work, even though I have firmware-ralink installed. When I click on the Network Manager icon, it lists my home network (WPA2 passphrase) as available, but clicking on it yields no result.
Before the system reinstall, I've been using the adapter with firmware-ralink without problems. As far as "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" goes, my system is up-to-date.
I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling firmware-ralink (rebooted too), but to no avail. The adapter seems to be undamaged.
Here are a few pieces of info that might be useful:
Code: Select all$ uname -a
Linux watershed 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.60-1+deb7u1 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Code: Select all# lsusb
...

I have just purchased an Edimax EW-7128g with Ralink RT61 chip and physically installed it in a system running CentOS 5.2. Trying to follow the installation instructions, I get the following:
[root@webtest Module]# make all
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build SUBDIRS=/root/drivers/2007_1210_RT61_Linux_STA_v1.1.2.0/Module modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2
The problem is that although /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build exists, it appears to be a link:
[root@webtest Module]# ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 Mar 23 15:34 /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build -> ../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-92.el5-i686

I've just installed Debian Wheezy on my old Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel celeron 2.20 GHz, 1GB Ram, 30 GB hard drive) and tried to connect to my home wifi network with a usb wifi adapter (Hamlet HNWU254G). lsusb in terminal says it is Ralink RT2501. Ethernet worked fine, so I installed firmware-ralink package, the adapter was recognized and I was able to connect.
However, I heard quite frequently a strange whistle and realized it came from the usb wifi adapter; it also got very very hot. Other strange thing: the computer some times freezes: screen flickering, loss of control of mouse and keyboard, need to shut down with power button.
At first I thought it was the video card not being powerful enough for Gnome (even classic), but then I installed Xfce4 and nothing changed. Instead, when working offline, freezes happen less frequently (but still happen).
I've tried the usb adapter on another laptop with wheezy: it gets hot, but there are no whistles and freezes.

We have two recently installed centos machines, each running 5.5, and hosting an elastix pabx distro as well as a Virtual PC instance. On both machines, the network adaptor fails completely every week or so. As they are remote machines, the only option we have when this happens is a manual reboot.
I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but the only significant difference on these machines to others we have deployed is the Virtual PC instance. The machines have dual ethernet ports, with one assigned to the virtual PC. When the network failure occurs, it does not effect the virtual machine, which continues along merrily.
My expert colleague does not think so, but can anyone think of any way that our configuration could be causing the problem? If not, does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be, or where I would start looking for information on the machine to debug the issue?

Installed CentOS 5.5 on VMware ESXi server running vsphere 4.1. Installed fine and picked the E1000 network adapter. But can't get the adapter to become active and pick up an IP address. Has anyone done this before? I can't get it to work. When i was testing CentOS out i used VirtualBox and worked fine using bridged networking but just can't seem to get this network card working.I've put some pictures of the config i've got.http:[url]....

I recently installed CentOS 5.5 on a Acer Revo with RaLink RT3090 wireless card (RaLink RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe). Everything works great except for the wireless card. I've looked at the ELRepo repository, but there is no support for this particular driver. Has anyone had any success with this card or am I stuck with no wireless.

Well, I reinstalled after this update fiasco we just had and now I am having issues with my driver resetting. I open terminal and type in:
Quote:
sudo rmmod rt2800usb
Finishes properly. I then pull my USB device, plug it back in, new driver kicks in. Wireless then works fine. However, upon reboot, it's back to using the rt2800usb driver, which doesn't work. So I head back to terminal and repeat the step above and all's well after.
I am fairly new to Fedora, so how can I actually get Fedora to completely blacklist the rt2800usb driver?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit) on a MSI A5000 which appears to have a RaLink RT3090 wireless card. So far everything seems to work except the Wireless card.
The problem is that no option for wireless appears in the network manager, it only shows the options for wired connection. This computer does have a button on the front to enable/disable wireless and I have confirmed that is is on, as there is a green indicator light showing this.
Can anyone tell me the status of the RaLink RT3090 with Ubuntu 10.04? I have looked through various posts here about getting this card working with earlier versions of the OS, where complicated procedures with mixed and apparently intermittent results are described. Do these measures also need to be followed with 10.04?
I have attempted several older solutions found in assorted threads here and I am still unable to get the card to even so much as show up in the network manager. The proceedure which seemed the most promising is here [URL]

It was recommended for my older Compaq desktop with a Celeron processor and 256mb of ram. I got the windows driver installer installed, but it was looking for a inf file and the driver I have on the cd is an executable file for an installer, so it wouldn't work. The cd also has a linux driver, but I do not know how to use terminal to install it. I'm at my wits end. I feel pretty stupid, because I know nothing about linux.

Or is it something to do with my computer? it seems funny theyve just gone and not on a fresh install even after formatting hard drive and deleting and re-sizing the partitions

Even with both machines in the same room, I'm only getting 1Mbps when using a pair of TL-WN321G wireless USB adapters to link my main box and my laptop. I'm using Fedora 11 on both machines. It is just as bad if I use the laptop's built-in wireless. lsusb shows the adapter uses the Ralink RT2501USB chipset. iwlist wlan0 rate gives "wlan0 unknown bit-rate information."

I have an EEEPC 1000HE that has an AzureWave AW-NE766 wireless card. As far as I know, the card is based on the Ralink 2860 chipset.
It always worked fine under eeebuntu 3.0, but I just installed Ubuntu NBR 10.4 and now it's not detected at all.
Kernel : 2.6.32-22-generic i686
lspci and lshw show no mention of wireless card at all. Network-manager and wicd both show wired connections, but no mention of wireless at all.
I followed the instructions on the "Solved" post to install the latest Ralink driver from Jan 29. It all went fine, except "ifconfig wlan0 up/down" and "ifconfig ra0 up/down" both return "ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device"
how to tell Ubuntu that I have a wireless card in there?
