A server is acting as a router between two networks. If the load increases what happens, to the speed of network? whether the network speed will be reduced or it will sustain the same speed (Ex: 100MBps).
View 7 RepliesI am thinking of moving the router behind a server and connecting the server directly to the internet via a modem. Are there any security issues related to doing this? or other things I should be aware of. Iptables are implemented on the server blocking access on unused ports.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was running ubuntu 10.04 for quite a while and one of our clients uses the Juniper SSL VPN connections in order to connect to them. This was working perfectly. However, this week I made a backup of my system, wiped my drive and installed Ubuntu 11.04 with which I am very happy except for the fact that the connection to this client now does not work. Every time I try to connect to the client using the ssl connection it simply says "connection time out".
I thought that it might be a setting on my machine due to the backup restores, so I did a fresh 11.04 installation on a different machine and directly after base installation tried it again, yet the same thing happened. I also thought it might be specific to firefox so I tried 2 other browsers with no luck. This does work with my credentials on my windows VM and on my ubuntu 10.04 vm though. How I get this connection working properly.

View 7 Replies View Relatedset up a redhat nat router for a classroom we have out main network is 192.168.110.0/24 and we ran out of ip address for all the school computers so i added a nat router to a large classroom with a network address of 192.168.116.0/24 almost everything is working fine except a connection to the ads server with a program called medisoft im guessing my nat is blocking it how can i open up all ports to and from my 192.168.116.0/24 network as it doesnt need any protection
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to configure my android phone (rooted Eris running kaossfroyo 2.2) to be used as a midi controller. Which I am having enough trouble with as it is but it has raised an annoying issue that occurred a month ago when I used the phones tethering network with my laptop. After connecting the laptop to the phones network (either tether, or an Ad-hoc network created using the network manager) I am unable to switch to other networks. In other words when I'm done with the phone-laptop connection I cannot connect my laptop to my home network! When I click on the other network connection I can see that it is attempting to connect in the upper right corner of the desktop (the network icon) but it will not make the connection.
What happens is that the network indicator will make the little circle graphic as if it is trying to connect but it never will display the other circle as green indicating that it has connected. but when I disconnect from the home network that is not connecting I will get a message underneath that will say that ad-hoc network disconnected! If I am switching from the android tether it will say Android-Tether disconnected etc. Even though when I click on network manager it shows that I am attempting to connect to the home network (labeled LIBERTY in my case) upon disconnection it shows the ad-hoc or tether connection being disconnected.
I am absolutely baffled by this! The issue persists even after deleting the ad-hoc connection from the wireless settings tab!!! I would speculate that for some reason the laptop is attempting to connect to the previous ad-hoc connection despite me wanting it to connect to LIBERTY. I am very confused and hope someone can lead me in the right direction.
(Fairly new Ubuntu user)I have a Desktop with 2 network cards and a file share.I currently have eth0 configured and working on a network hosing about 30 people.Now I have another 50-60 people connected on a separate network that want to be tied into the same file share. I have configured both eth0 and eth1 for the networks that they are connected on. currently only eth0 works.When I configured eth1 for some reason It shows that it was last used "never".Is there a way to keep these networks separate and share these files from this server?

I have setup an ubuntu gateway server by using four NIC cards.
eth0 :210.212.235.107 is connected to the internet
eth1 :192.168.1.222 is connected to the local network
eth2 :192.168.2.222 is connected to another network
Here 192.168.1.222 is the gateway for 192.168.1.0 network and 192.168.2.222 is the gateway for 192.168.2.0 network.These network configurations are working fine, but i want to block inter network communication ie from 192.168.1.0 network to 192.168.2.0 network,i want to block the communication for securing the local networks more.I know iptable rule is enough for this purpose .But i cant find the apt rule for this purpose.
I am trying to set up a basic router. I am running ubuntu server 10.04(just installed it today!) I have a verizon aircard(mobile broadband card) that is connected via usb. I am using wvdial to "dial-up" the connection. This works just fine and gives me a device on ppp0. There is a single lan connection on eth0 set up as a static ip address under /etc/network/interfaces. I don't even have any firewall running yet. For whatever reason, I can only get out on the internet when eth0 is set to get its ip address through dhcp. When I set it up with a static ip, I get for example:
$ping 4.2.2.2
From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable.
$ping google.com
ping: unknown host google.com
If, however, after I have booted and the wvdial has been started, I set up eth0 as dhcp, run /etc/init.d/networking restart, set it back as static, run /etc/init.d/networking restart again, all work well. When I reboot the system with the static ip on eth0, and connect to wvdial, I get no internet again.
My lan connection to my router isn't working i have it plugged in the cable is good ( fyi i do have some computer knowledge) So my wireless is working right when i booted up but my lan is not. i have a @#$^ i am afraid to say what it is lol dell with their integrated ethernet card. OS: ubuntu 10.04 everything works fine but the wired connection.
Dlink router with all of the settings made properly. i read somewhere about doing a whole bunch of stuff but i thought that since this was a higher version they would have that problem fixed. i also have aim or msn whichever is more preferred. i hopefully will be notified that someone has responded to this thread.
My internet works fine if I plug directly into the modem, but if I go through the router either using ethernet or wireless it doesn't work. I can access the router perfectly when using wireless and change settings and all that but cant access the internet. From what I've read it isn't a DNS issue because I cant get a result from pinging an ip, so I think it may be something firewall related but I'm unsure.

It had always worked with no problems until some time last week when the wired network stopped working (but the wireless still works with no problem). At first I thought that it was some update, but no. My laptop works ok with the wired network at my office, and I also tried a different laptop at home and it didn't work. It's not the cable either, I tried a different one. I haven't changed any settings in my router.So I really don't know what's going on. I just find it weird that the router's wired networking suddenly stops working but the wireless still works fine...

For the background, I'll be using my router as a firewall with snort-inline enabled. I got 3 NIC's: one for the WAN, the second will be bridged to the WAN NIC for queuing traffic which snort-inline requires, and the third is the LAN NIC (the computer I use for everyday work). Here's how I have my interfaces set up:

From what I understand, queuing needs to be set up on the bridge. From the documentation I've read it's done like this:

And then to forward traffic, I did:

I've done this and am able to ping the router, obtain a DNS address from dnsmasq from the LAN computer. From the router I am able to connect to the internet (ping, links <address>...). From the LAN computer trafficking isn't getting forwarded, Firefox, links, ping all don't resolve.
I am trying to get an arp packet from my wireless wifi router (access point), to which I am not connected. I simply tried ping 192.168.0.1, but the answer was connect: network is unreachable. What can I do about that?
View 5 Replies View RelatedUseing gnome network manger. I thught that is DNS resolve problem, and wrote in linksys router the same DNS as 3g huaweii modem use. Steel the some result. NO INTERNET. Change for static ip in router and try use the same gatway , but steell can't use connected at the same time to internet with 3g and local router.
Only one devace at the same time, Router have no any acces to internat. SO why 3g internet stoping working after connecting router to LAN ports? Has it some thing to do with subnet or ip range and routing table?
I'm running a Source Dedicated Server on my Ubuntu laptop, and to connect to it via external IP from other computers in the network I need to enable loopback in my router.This was working fine, but then I disconnected my laptop for a few days, and when I came back the wireless stopped working on my Xbox. I reset the router to factory defaults, and then setup everything again. It was all working fine until I enabled loopback again and power cycled my router. Now every time I do that, the internet on Ubuntu stops working and the wireless on the Xbox stops working.
Edit: You can ignore this I guess. It seems I was actually DISABLING loopback by enabling that router option, which I guess caused this. Strange, because the first time enabling this option was the only way to get my external ip to work. Oh well, everything is fine now.
Right so yesterday my internet worked fine. Today - no connection at all. The light for my cable on the router doesn't even show up. I originally had indicator-network installed, so when the internet first stopped working, I tried a few other options such as tethering to my phone via usb and bluetooth (which I have successfully used in the past). However, these didn't work, and I figured that as connman is still in beta, maybe that was why. So I reinstalled network-manager and network-manager-gnome via a usb stick, uninstalled indicator-network, and rebooted the computer. Still no internet.
When I click on the applet, it says "No network devices are available". This is odd, as I definitely have a network device... it is part of the motherboard. So I thought I'd do the SMARTlan test or whatever it's called. It's part of my BIOS, so I ran that and it returned results that I (kinda) expected: when the cable wasn't plugged in, it returned one set of results. When it was only plugged into my computer (and not the router), it returned another set of results. And when it was plugged into both my computer and the router, it returned a third set of results. So that leads me to believe the cable itself is fine.
And when I move the cable to a different port on the router, nothing changes. The corresponding light still doesn't come on. Network-manager, telling there are no network devices. The BIOS can see the ethernet port and the cable. And the router is functioning perfectly for my parents' computer and my ps3. And I have checked the cable to my computer for physical damage - it follows the same path as the one to my ps3, and on top of that, nothing physical can possibly have happened to it in the last day. This happened once before, except I don't think the network devices were lost.
running ubuntu 10.10 on a toshiba laptop recently the wireless Internet stopped working from our netgear router, it still works for the Ienova laptop and emachines desktop using the router but this laptop will not work wirelessly internet cuts in and out on this laptop when on wireless when it didn't previously do so it reads a connection but will not load up web pages unless hard wired in with an ethernet cord.

Then suddenly the network stoppedworking, and I can no longer see any networks under "Wireless networks".The Wired networks works fine.I tried upgrading ubuntu, but nothing changed. Just to confirm, I rebooted the computer in Windows Vista (Dual boot) andconfirmed that Wireless worked fine there. No hardware problem then.The suggestions I have found on this and other forums suggest looking at the output from iwconfig and ifconfig. But since I'm a n00b at Ubuntu I don't know what to make of it.

i had a very old server given to me. it's a Compaq Prosignia 200. it has a 166 pentium, more than 64 mb of ram(unkown because i see 2 32mb sticks and there are 2 more smaller sized sticks), a cd drive, a 6 gb hdd, and enough pci slots for 3 nic. i'd like to use it for a router for my 2 home pc's. i have no idea what im doing or if the hardware itself will run as a router. i do have a 25mb connection and dont really want to lose my bandwidth.probably too much to ask but i thought i'd give it a go.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a home network and trying to set up a Ubuntu Server (10.04) as a samba file server and a web server.I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Server and the automatic network configuration during installation failed. I've looked into host.conf, networks, interfaces, hosts and resolv.conf and either my settings are wrong or it's something else. I have a Win7 computer connected to same router and DSL modem and it works fine (edit: most of the time--- see below).

I want to use centos as a developer server on my desktop before deploying my stuff to the internet.
I have a netgear DG834G router. It's IP address on my local network is 192.168.0.1 and connected to the adsl line. The router is set up to act as an dhcp server too. On the router I have reserved ip address for the nics per their mac addresses.
My server is on a dual boot desktop. The other boot is XP and works fine, picks up dhcp.
I don't know how to connect Centos to the router.
I have tried to play with the network manager but to no avail.
I can ping localhost, interface eth0 is there, but i can't ping to the router.
I have set the manager system/administration/network to get dhcp automatically.
I can't activate the eth0 although the hardware device says it is OK.
I've looked at firewall and iptalbes.
I'm trying to get my SSH server I set up on my home box working from behind a router. A 2wire 2700HG-B gateway, in fact. Now, I know my server is working fine, because I can get into it via loopback, anywhere inside the LAN from another machine, OR if I go into the router's config and enable DMZ for the machine. However, I don't like having DMZ on all the time because of the kludge-ness of it, and the security issue of the complete absence of a hardware firewall.If I try to port forward and access it from outside the LAN using the external IP (or my DynDNS, because it's dynamic), it just times out. I have a nonstandard port (45) for the listen port of the server, to keep away hack attempts if I were using the standard 22. I used this to see if the port was open, and it said it was. But, I tried the trick of telnetting the IP with that port, and it also timed out, instead of printing stuff about OpenSSH.
Attached is a screenie of my router's firewall page, so you all can look at it and see if I'm an idiot and doing it wrong. You might notice uTorrent there, it's because this machine is a dual-boot with 7, and the router doesn't differentiate the OS's. Also the SSH @ 46 port is for the Windows side, with freeSSHd. I changed the port on that one so the client I have can distinguish them, so it can run a reachability test.

I'm trying to setup my ubuntu sys as a router and firewall... Internet -> Ubuntu (Router) -> Switch (no DHCP on it) -> Computers I've already setup bind and dhcp3 and got those working perfectly... I've also setup Squid3 and Dansguardian for content filtering (blocking ads and such) and got them working too... I want to set it all up to be transparent, and allow the system itself to function as a powerful firewall router, giving absolutely NO issues to client computers connected, and no speed reduction at all.... I want to setup the firewall to allow all outgoing connections, but block everything incoming (stealth the network)... Forcing all http/s traffic to pass through dansguardian, then to squid...
But am very confused on how to pull this off... The system is running Ubuntu 10.10 Server 64-bit, with 4 GB of RAM, 320 GB SSD, and two 1Gb NIC cards... Sorry if I'm not very clear, I do speak english perfectly, but just kinda new to the "Linux world", I was using SONICWALL but that's getting a little too costly to my network and wanna do a free alternative... Something completely CUSTOM, not using some network security distro.
I have been searching google for a while now and have not found exactly what I am looking for. I would like to use my fresh install of ubuntu server 11.04 as my router/gateway for my home. I am not an expert at linux by any means but I can usually figure stuff out. I believe I need iptables, bind, and a few others probally. It eventually will also be a samba server but I have done a little with samba before. I do have 2 network cards, my router at the moment is starting to die and would love to have a more powerful router. I would also like to figure out how to do port forwarding in the router, as well as be able to see the load on the network cards. Maybe there is a program to show usage by user? As well as be able to do packet pritorization.
