Networking :: Proxy ARP For One Interface (proxying For Wirelessly Isolated Clients)?
Sep 23, 2010
I have a network on which all the wired and wireless connected clients are isolated from one another which is what our network requires.
One down side to this is that the isolation doesn't allow local clients to talk to one another and if they did, I would want it routed through the gateway. Is it possible to enable proxy arp on only the interface which the clients are connected (eth1) to make the gateway forward traffic between local clients?

I need to make some solution for my home network, I have a linux server which is: Linux Centos 5.5. So, what I need to do is to make a virtual interface for my clients which set its bandwidth up to 1Mb/s shared to them, but my real bandwidth is 2Mb/s. Also, after that, I have two questions:
1. How to set this rate limitation to that interface?
2. How to edit this interface to let it work and route the client data to my ADSL router?
I'm already generate the virtual interface using webmin managment tool, so I need to set its rate and route data.

small non-profit set up an isolated network for a classroom, not connected to the Internet. Most of the computers are old second-hand systems, made usable by running Linux, the one new computer can dual boot Ubuntu and Windows. I think the most light-weight approach would be to use one of the network numbers reserved for private use, assign static IP addresses, and host names in a hosts file, rather than relying on DHCP or DNS, because this wouldn't rely on any servers. But, even so, I expect to have to configure _something_ for the IPs of a gateway and DNS servers when we set up the static IP settings.what would work best for these settings?
The best guess I can make would be to list a real system with a tcp/ip stack that wouldn't be too tightly firewalled, so that requests would get promptly rejected (or handled if there is a trivial way of doing so), rather than timed out. But, I'm looking for more specific advice of what works on practice. (I'm familiar with other flavors of Unix/Linux, and TCP/IP in general, mainly from running applications on servers, but I don't have much experience on Ubuntu.) These systems would be on Ethernet switch, but I don't think we can count on any router appliances. I suppose one of the spare computers could be dedicated as a minimal router. The objective of all this networking is to set up print sharing and perhaps file service, using one of the better computers as a server.

give a reference to the definition of 'isolated network' as used in the Virtual Machine Manager? I have virtual machines that I do not want to have access to the host, I thought 'isolated network' did this but the VM's can ping the host. If (probably) I am wrong, how can I create an network that can not see anything else but what is also on the same network? The host and the isolated network are 192. and 172. The virtual bridge is not connected (or so it says) to any physical device.

At my work, we have several clients (outside clients) that have an FTP login to our FTP Server. Their login then leads them to their home FTP folder. The FTP server is currently a Win2003 box. Because we have so many clients, we would like to implement some form of WebGui that would allow each client to manage their own FTP home folder and user info, such as resetting their password if they lost it.
Is there anything like this available in linux that would provide us with that kind of control/usability?

I have deployed proxy server in my office about a month ago. I have about 7-8 client accessing it through port 3128. After some days of deployment, my server started creating problems. Some clients were not able to access proxy while other clients were accessing it. The error message which I found in cache.log was:
Code:
WARNING: Closing client 192.168.2.99 connection due to lifetime timeout
In this way it was disconnecting clients randomly. The problem resolves when I restart proxy server
Im sending my cache.log file
Code:
Last login: Mon Nov 15 12:37:29 2010 from 192.168.2.2
[root@localhost ~]# cat /var/log/squid/cache.log

I have configured router(192.168.1.2) to serve only one machine with IP - '192.168.1.6' and set up SQUID proxy on '192.168.1.6'. I have defined some rules(ACL) regarding connections to internet on SQUID proxy.
I changed the Gateway of rest of machine (192.168.1.60 - 192.168.1.69) from '192.168.1.2' to '192.168.1.6'.
The policies which I defined in SQUID is working properly but 'Linux Evolution mail' client is not fetching mails.
Is I have to do any other settings on 'Linux System' or 'Evolution mail client'.

I'm trying to set up squid proxy as a replacement for a cgiproxy perl script.I would like to be able to hit it with a url, and have it pass everything back to the browser, something like URL... much the same way the cgiproxy script works.
This is my first time messing with squid, and I am completely lost. Does anyone have a link to some very detailed step by step instructions on how to do this? Can someone please tell me *which* kind of proxy I'm looking for? I see "interception proxy" or "transparent proxy" and a bunch of other terms thrown around in the docs, but nothing I have seen tells me which of those I'm actually looking for, or if what I'm trying to do is even possible with squid.

I haven't used Plone in quite a while and am having problems getting Apache to serve it up now. I'm using the same configuration that I used for proxying Plone sites for a couple of years, but now that same configuration now gives me the following error in Apache's error log: [warn] proxy: No protocol handler was valid for the URL /. If you are using a DSO version of mod_proxy, make sure the proxy submodules are included in the configuration using LoadModule. Here's the proxy modules I'm loading for troubleshooting purposes for now.
apache2ctl -t -D DUMP_MODULES | grep proxy
Syntax OK
proxy_module (shared)
proxy_ajp_module (shared)
[code]....
I've Googled this extensively and it seems most people who ran into this problem hadn't loaded the proxy_http module after upgrading to Apache 2.2 from 2.0.
Edit: BTW, I'm using Plone 4.0.3 now. I was running Plone 2.5 before. I don't see why that would be a problem though as VHM's are now built into Zope.

I just bought an almost new netbook with the Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on it. It's made by System76 and was designed to work with Ubuntu. I downloaded Xubuntu-desktop and wicd and it now has a lot of software on it. It connects to the internet easily with a wired connection, but I cannot get it to find an ip address on my unencrypted home wireless network...it does see my network, though.I don't see the name of the hardware when I type sudo lspci. How can I find what chipset I have for my wireless device? A how to get online wirelessly?

I am trying to create solution with Reverse Proxy, mod_proxy and mod_proxy_connect. I haven't really used this before so I am just curious if I am doing it right. I have attached what I am trying to do plus a copy of the config:Here is my current requirement
We are going to have 3 servers, right now our top level domain is[URL] We have an E-Commerce Server in Production Right now that already has an SSL Cert on it so right now the production server for E-Commerce is [URL] However, as we are growing, we don't want to use subdomains, so instead, we want to use the reverse proxying feature on apache. We are running mostly windows servers and IIS for the E-Commerce, CMS and the Wordpress Server. Assume the following -
Apache Proxy Server 10.100.10.60
E-Commerce Server 10.100.10.3 (www.ooolalashop.com)
Content Management Server 10.100.10.3 (cms.ooolalashop.com)
Word Press Blog Server 10.100.10.3 (blog.ooolalashop.com)
1) We need the following mapped
[URL] - maps to ecommerce server - since ssl cert is going to stay on the server, on the proxy we just create a static host that points to the e-commerce server
[URL]
All of these should be pretty easy to reverse proxy
2) We need to be able to proxy the SSL connection or have it pass through to the server on the back end with the domain [URL] right now we are getting some errors Here is the error I get with SSL [Sun Aug 22 01:51:30 2010] [warn] proxy: No protocol handler was valid for the URL /. If you are using a DSO version of mod_proxy, make sure the proxy submodules are included in the configuration using LoadModule.
Here is a copy of the config
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerAdmin support@cometcomputing.com
ServerNamewww.ooolalashop.com
DocumentRoot/var/www/ooo

For reasons that are not terribly interesting I decided it would be a great idea to remove and re-install the xserver-xorg package. Which proved to be a much larger mistake than I imagined it would be. I purged the package, and then restarted.Naturally I need to have an internet connection to use apt-get to reinstall xserver-xorg, which is where my idea falls apart.I followed the directions in the How To: Manual Network Configuration. However, after I enter the command "sudo dhclient wlan1" I get the line "wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801" twice prior to the output that the above link shows. Then I just get DHCPDISCOVER messages until I get a "No DHCPOFFERS received. No working leases in persistent database - sleeping."
I'm connecting with WEP to a router that I know works (because I'm using it to type this on my laptop right now) and I know that the wireless adapter(RTL8187) is installed properly because it automatically connected to my network when I had xserver-xorg still installed.I'm running ubuntu 9.04.I've searched for a few hours and I'm no closer to resolving the issue.
