View 14 RepliesI recently did some troubleshooting on a USB wireless dongle hooked up to my Mint distro. I need the USB wireless to access a home DSL wireless modem out to the Internet. The wireless DSL is on 192.168.0.1
I also have a 10/100 ethernet NIC in the computer, for non-wireless connections. The wired ethernet is all 192.168.1.1. I noticed in /var/log/syslog that there are numerous "DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67" messages.
Since eth0 has a hard-coded IP, I dunno why DHCP is trying deal with it. Can I turn off DHCP activity against eth0? How to do that?
I am using fedora core 2. I used the oldest version of fedora just because im running only 1 system, my specification is: HP compaq PC,pentuim4, 512mb memory, 40gig hdd, Intel board. I have two units same spec..windows xp and the other one is fedora 2. The windows xp normally detect the lan card, but when I try to fedora2, I try to active it and seems no lan card detecting,. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron E1505, which has the Dell Wireless 1505 (Broadcom) card. To run the card, I installed the Broadcom STA wireless driver, which seems to activate the wireless card OK. The problem is that once I installed that driver my onboard Ethernet card was deactivated (and yes, it is enabled in BIOS). I had to remove the wireless driver to get the Ethernet back. Does anyone have ideas? I haven't found this problem listed elsewhere. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 with no other problems.

Currently I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, Kernel 2.5.35-29-generic. I have a Broadcom 4318 for my WLAN and a Broadcom 4401-B0 for my ethernet. I followed the tutorial and I managed to get packet injection working on my WLAN; however, my ethernet connection isn't working. I tried sudo modeprobe b44, but I get the following message:

I've brought a friend over to linux from windows. He has some how deleted his "Wired Etho" connection. He said his computer would not shut down(Mint Linux 9), so he unplugged it. You guessed it right after restarting no internet. After checking under "Network Connection" his wired connection is gone. My question is? How to reconfigure a "Wired Etho" connection? He has a dsl connection running a Linksys router(sorry I don't know the model number). I have only talked with him on the phone, so I have not personally checked the system out. I just finished working on it this past sunday and everything was fine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty decent DSL connection that usually gave me about 105KB/second download speed over wifi. The "official" download speed was 1.5 megabits so I should have been getting a bit more, but that's not my question.
I recently switched to Mint from Ubuntu. Now my download speed is significantly slower, to the tune of 45 KB/second. Since the connection runs at normal speed when I connect via an ethernet cable, my guess is that mint doesn't give enough power to the wifi card. Is there any way I can fix that?
I have just installed Linux Mint 8 to an Asus A6000. My problem is that the computer won't connect with my wireless router. I have tried with MAC-adress and such, but still no respons. I also tried to connect with a cable to my modem, but no response there either.
I think I may lack some drivers, to what I think is Broadcom b43, but I am not sure. I tried to download the drivers on my other computer, and transfered them to the Asus. I managed to install 2/4 drivers, but on the two others, I get this message "Failed to fetch ... Couldn't reach archive.ubuntu.com"
Just installed Fedora 14 from the Live CD i686 on my Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't connect to the SpeedTouch 585 on either wireless broadcom card or the wired Ethernet card.
I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.
I've been struggling with this a bit now, and I'm not sure what the problem is. I have a laptop with a BCM4401 Ethernet card as well as a BCM4311 Wireless card. The wireless card works great out of the box, I'm able to connect with it perfectly. The problem is the ethernet card. Here is the situation: The NetworkManager menu doesn't list "Wired Networks" at all (ie. it doesn't say "not managed", it just only lists Wireless networks) Going into Network Connections, there is an "Auto eth0" entry ifconfig shows eth0 (which I assume means NetworkManager isn't managing eth0) I have edited /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf to say managed=true I have edited /etc/network/interfaces to remove any mention of eth0 (all that's left is the "lo" lines) So I'm not sure why eth0 is still showing up when I run ifconfig, and why Network Manager is not managing it. Any ideas?

The MAC address of the "Auto eth0" entry is 00:1C:23:8F:D4:39, the same as the eth1 entry that ifconfig spits out.
So basically, complete linux noob here, dual-booted fedora 13 with windows 7, and fedora can't seem to detect either my wired or wireless, however i don't really care about the wired. I have an HP Pavilion Dv6-1230US laptop that I bought from staples when it was on sale for 800 dollars with a 4 year accidental damage warranty. It came with Vista Home Premium 64Bit installed. It had Windows 7 Business 64Bit on it at one point, And the latest windows installation was Windows Vista Business 32Bit. My trial period ran out on vista and I switched to Ubuntu 10.04 32Bit, and, as always, I have a problem with the wireless card. I have looked it up and everything, i do have the drivers installed, and it looks functional, but its not. It will act like its going to connect to my AP (Netgear WNR3500L that is like 2 days old), but it eventually askes me for my WPA2-Personal AES key, which I have supplied, and is correct before hand, i type the exact same thing in and it still doesn't work.
I've tried sudo apt-get update, and sudo apt-get upgrade, but it doesn't work. nothing has to update. This installation was installed today, and updated about 6 hours ago to the fullest extent.The wired works absolutely perfect (that's how i updated it). Hardware:Laptop has a Broadcom 4322AG b/g/draft-n wireless card from HP integrated into the laptop. The router is a Netgear WNR3500L which i bought because we are switching ISP's soon and our old router is a modem, that will only work on a DSL connection.
My HP Pavilion dm4 notebook has the Broadcom bcm4313 and worked with the proprietary Broadcom driver provided with Ubuntu 10.04 but did not work with the corresponding driver provided with Ubuntu 10.10. The solution that worked for me (for a while) was to install "broadcom-sta-common" and its dependencies using Synaptic. After enabling the proprietary driver (System > Administration > Additional Drivers) and rebooting, wireless worked. I even shared this on this post. chargersfan420 get his Broadcom card functional again.
What changed to break it? Well, wireless had worked for several days, so I felt that I had solved the wireless problem. Now it was time to find a solution to unlock my BIOS settings. I successfully used PCCMOSCleaner to clear the password. After that, no more wireless. (Note to dm4 users: Apparently HP puts a password on the BIOS settings and makes it available only if you boot into the factory-installed Windows 7 and retrieve it. Of course I never booted into Windows 7 before upgrading the machine to Linux, deleting both the Windows partition and HP's hidden recovery partition.)
I uninstalled all the Broadcom stuff and reinstalled it all. Now I appear to have wl working, and b43 and ssb blacklisted, but network manager is not seeing any wireless connections available.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 today, and I can't get any connection through the LAN. I've tried some stuff on my own, but I've been unsuccessful so far. It's not a hardware or connection issue, as it works perfectly fine in Windows 7. I haven't had this issue in any previous version of Ubuntu (or any Linux distro for that matter).The weirdest part is I booted from the installation CD as as LiveCD, and everything worked perfectly fine. It only stops working after I actually install it. Here's the results of ifconfig:

Im having trouble with my hp mini 110, i read abit of information about it on the site and installed a package that gets my wifi working, problem being is that as soon as I go upstairs i lose connection, its not really upstairs if I move more than 5 feet away from my router no internet although the laptop reads full signal.
I believe its a problem with the broadcom drivers, is there anyway to resolve this or do I have to go back to Windows 7 because I really dont wanna do that.
i shut down my ubuntu karmic for a bit. turned it back on after an hour or so and now i have no network connection. i checked all the obvious things like cords etc wife's computer is connected through the same router / modem and no probs here.i even replaced the card in mine.

When the ethernet network connected, it will go into the else loop at line no. 13. The system will send status and display the status at control panel screen. If at this point, the ethernet disconnected, it will go back to the if loop at line 1. The system will keep trying to connect to the network and keep loop the if loop until it is connected.
Question now is I need the system to test the connection too after going into the operation loop that is start from the line no. 47. I need the system to detect connection everytime an operation is going to happen or ended and if there is no connection, it will trying to connect. Before it is connected, it will not continue the operations. I tried to put the function "Connect (szPort, szAddress)" into each loop. Yes, the operation stop everytime the network disconnected. However, it shows on control panel screen "New Connection...." everytime it execute the statement. In fact, the network never disconnected.
I tried to look at the Connect function code, it is as below, I cannot figure out any statement that can stop the appearance of that "New Connection...". It may be hidden at the library source code, it is too hard for a beginner to modify the library code.

i've just got a new broadband/wireless connection from Virgin Media and am trying to get this very old laptop online. in the past, cable connections have been easy, and wireless has given issues, but this time its the opposite. so, i have a new cable connection that is all plugged in. called customer support, they have no support for linux as usual, but they 'manually activated' the modem and thats all they can do. i am not trying to setup the wireless network yet, i'll do that with a pc later, for now i just want to plug in and go. on Network Settings, i have set the wired connection to dhcp. thats what i've done before ... not sure if i need to get static addresses from the ISP? i can go online now using the erratic but generous neighborhood free wireless.

I have a Sun server that could be only configured via serial interface. It has one serial port with a RJ 45 connector. Although my laptop has not serial interface. Is there a way to use C-Kermit or any software to establish a serial connection via the ethernet port. It should be some kind of virtual serial port that should transmit the information over the ethernet port, without encapsulating it in ethernet frames.

I take a phone jack in the bedroom, I splice off the line of the phone and insert an RJ45 connector along with the phone connector. Hopefully the line will be 4 wire. I can't imagine it would work with only 2 wire. I don't know for sure. Would that work?
My thoughts are the problems with the entire phone line connections. I know the phone line runs out of the house. Would it not work because of that when I attach a switch to it? If anyone has accomplished this or tried to, I would like to know. I'm guessing that the house would have to be pre-wired with CAT-5 because of collisions that can occur.
