I am trying to connect my desktop to my laptop over a non-internet connected LAN, but when i enable the LAN connection on my desktop (the one with the wireless) its internet stops working.
it is a very similar problem to this except that i am using ubuntu for the machine with the two connections.
right now i have my wireless on the 192.168.1.* address space, while the LAN is to be on 192.168.5.*
note: my goal is not to share internet with my laptop, just be able to connect to it and the internet at the same time.
desktop: ubuntu 9.10 , wireless and LAN
laptop: windows xp, LAN only

I tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 Maverick as dual boot on my laptop. However when xubuntu is on, I can't find a way to connect to internet. When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.

I have a Dell Studio 1558 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. It's a brilliant piece of hardware and love everything about it except some of it's overheating problems. When I first bought it with Windows 7 pre-installed, it had an application installed on it called PeerNet, which creates a wireless network for other computers (and wifi-enabled phones) to connect to it. Simultaneously, you could also share your internet connection with these users. The internet connection could be either wired or wireless.
My question is, how do I go about finding the same functionality on Ubuntu since I know my hardware is capable of it. (I believe in Windows 7, it creates a virtual adapter that it uses) I know there are ways to share a WIRED internet connections with some help with the terminal, but I haven't found a way to share a WIRELESS internet connection. The network manager allows you to create a wireless network but I'm unable to connect to another wireless network at the same time.
The reason I mentioned mobile phones is because my mobile (Android 2.2) is unable to find a wireless network created by the network manager, but another laptop is (without internet access that is). I've noticed that mobile devices and iPod's aren't able to find ad-hoc networks on Windows PCs as well.
I hope someone out there will be able to find a solution for me (and surely others as well!) Maybe the final release of 11.04 will help out later if nothing turns up now.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I would like to use my computer to share the internet connection from an ethernet port. For example, I would like to set up my computer as a wireless access point so I can create a network that other computers can connect to for internet.

I just finished downloading the latest version of xubuntu on my dell insperon 1545. I went to set up the internet and i cannot figure out how. In the top right corner the connection icon has only one option that i can select, and thats configure the vpn settings i think. I installed it using dual booting next to windows 7, so i keep switching back and forth trying to look something up and go back to see if it will work. However, i think i should make the point that i've never worked with any linux type o.s. before.

This is weird. I will be working on the internet with several tabs open and all of a sudden the pages won't update. I can't go anywhere - it's like I lost the connection. I am also downloading bittorrents with uTorrent running with WIne and that doesn't seem to be affected. I also have gPodder and I tried to update podcasts with that and it also hangs up as if it can't connect. The only way I have been able to solve this has been to reboot (which I just did).

I have a fresh install of Karmic on a older compaq laptop. I initially had LAN access, but not wifi. I added a few Broadcom packages using synaptic, and then neither worked. Then I removed the same packages, but I still have no internet access, LAN or wifi. Here are some of my settings. vincentertainment@vincentertainment-laptop:~$ iwconfig

I bought a new Eee PC yesterday ripped off Windows and stuck Ubuntu 10.04 on (which is great by the way). It's all working fine except for the wireless I think I have: RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe. I've installed ndiswrapper and installed the drivers and I can connect to my wireless but I get no internet. It works fine on my windows box or when I plug the cable in. I've looked around and been fiddling with it for hours and no joy, it all seems to be installed correctly its just not working!

I'm using 10.04 I tried to connect to a free WiFi connection. I had the password for it too. I had been able to access the connection 2 weeks ago with no real trouble. Now, the thing at the top of my screen indicates I'm connected BUT I can't get Firefox to access any sites. I can't download email using Thunderbird. Pretty strange isn't it?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and am very excited about using it for the first time. I am very new to computers and stuff though so I don't have much of a clue as to what I'm doing. Although it installed fine, for my wireless connection it says "device not ready". What does this mean and how do I connect to the internet?

I realize this seems like a repeat question (and it probably is). I have been searching for a solution to my issue on the forums/web for a few hours to no avail. I have a Compaq f700 with Vista. I am sick of Vista. I installed Ubuntu today. Looking forward to using it more. However I am having problems with the internet.
My wireless internet is on the on setting, however, the light will not switch from orange to green (if I load Vista instead, the light changes). Broadcom BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311], It says my wireless is disabled. I can not figure out how to enable it.

Well I have been succeeded to connect to the weather center, but I can't update or open the Internet even if I have been able to open Hotmail.com after 2 minutes it won't open anything after that
Note: I didn't install the driver for adapter and I don't know how to do it because I tried before and I failed adding I used it on more than one distro. By the way it works perfect on Windows?

My friend installed ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop for me, and connected me to his wireless internet. When I needed to restart, the wireless wouldn't connect a second time.
When I took my laptop home, I connected to my wireless fine. But again, when I tried to connect the second time it refused to connect.
I am currently connected to an ethernet cable, but I dont always have access to the wired internet.

I have a LG X140 G.BG12P1. This netbook has a factory installed Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is working without any problems or issues. I recently installed on a free partition the Ubuntu Netbook 10.10, and I'm really upset because of the wireless issues I'm having here. If I use the Ethernet wired connection, I don't have any problems. In Windows 7, I don't have any problems either on Ethernet and on Wireless card. But when I try to use Ubuntu with the wireless card, I'm having very slow access to web pages, and sometimes they simply refuse to appear. I can open my DIR-655 router web pages without any problems. It appears to be a DNS related problem, because when I try to opne web pages using their IP (like [url]) I don`t have this issue. I modified my resolv.conf file to inlude my ISP DNS, but didn't work.
