Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Wireless But Get No Internet
May 15, 2010
I bought a new Eee PC yesterday ripped off Windows and stuck Ubuntu 10.04 on (which is great by the way). It's all working fine except for the wireless I think I have: RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe. I've installed ndiswrapper and installed the drivers and I can connect to my wireless but I get no internet. It works fine on my windows box or when I plug the cable in. I've looked around and been fiddling with it for hours and no joy, it all seems to be installed correctly its just not working!

I tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 Maverick as dual boot on my laptop. However when xubuntu is on, I can't find a way to connect to internet. When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.

My friend installed ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop for me, and connected me to his wireless internet. When I needed to restart, the wireless wouldn't connect a second time.
When I took my laptop home, I connected to my wireless fine. But again, when I tried to connect the second time it refused to connect.
I am currently connected to an ethernet cable, but I dont always have access to the wired internet.

I have a LG X140 G.BG12P1. This netbook has a factory installed Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is working without any problems or issues. I recently installed on a free partition the Ubuntu Netbook 10.10, and I'm really upset because of the wireless issues I'm having here. If I use the Ethernet wired connection, I don't have any problems. In Windows 7, I don't have any problems either on Ethernet and on Wireless card. But when I try to use Ubuntu with the wireless card, I'm having very slow access to web pages, and sometimes they simply refuse to appear. I can open my DIR-655 router web pages without any problems. It appears to be a DNS related problem, because when I try to opne web pages using their IP (like [url]) I don`t have this issue. I modified my resolv.conf file to inlude my ISP DNS, but didn't work.

it doesn't list any available connections, and it doesn't connect either

I am VERY new to all of this, so if it's possible please use very "babyish" words if that's okay. I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and it works awesome, I love it so much! However, I can't get wireless to work. It works for my Windows Vista which is on the same laptop I installed Ubuntu on... what do I do?? If it's okay, can someone on here talk step by step explaining in newbie terms because I am very very new to computer stuff. I really love Ubuntu so far but need to get internet so I have the full advantages of it.

I installed ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop a few days ago and love the OS so far. However, initially i could only get internet connection though an ethernet cord. After much internet searching, i finally figured out how to get wireless internet. Unfortunately, in setting up wireless internet, I no longer have wired internet. The system doesn't seem to recognize my wired internet anymore. I'd like a scenario where i can connect to the internet both wired and wireless.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on my HP Touchsmart TX2 1020us which has a Broadcom 4322 chip. At first my computer didn't seem to see the card at all, but then I typed the command (sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source) and then restarted the computer and now I'm connected to the network, but cannot connect to the internet so how do I figure this out. Like I said I have very little experience with linux at all so please don't make your answers too complicated.

i just installed the 10.0.4 version. My problem is that I cant connect to the internet. When I add a new wireless connection, it says that its connected but i cant ping the router or connect to any websites. It keeps auto assigning me with a 10.42.43.1 ip which doesn't make any since because my router's is nowhere close to that.

I've just installed Ubuntu. My house isn't wired so I use wireless on all my machines to connect to the internet. When I start up Ubuntu, I can connect to my wireless router. After about 3 minutes, I get disconnected. It refuses to reconnect for several minutes. If I disable and reenable networking, I can establish a connection again, but the process is repeated. I'm not really sure what the issue is here. Any guesses? This is a desktop and I'm using a Belkin wireless adapter.

I am trying to connect to a wireless internet but can't. I previously used linux ubuntu and my wireless card worked. I am guessing that it should work with fedora then too. Is that correct? Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do to get the wireless internet working again on Fedora 12? Or what I should do to get usb wireless adapter to work.

I connect my internet using pppoe to may DSL modem with bridging mode, and it goes fine until I try to put a wireless router between my PC and the modem. After I configure both modem and the router, I can run my wireless network fine by connecting it from a laptop, but my PC is unable to reach the modem at this configuration.
PC has address 192.168.2.100
Router has address 192.168.2.2
Modem has address 192.168.2.1
all with netmask 255.255.255.0
With bridging configuration in modem and automatic detect configuration in the wireless router, the wireless network run well, except the PC cannot ping the Modem saying that
Code:
root@firefly:~# ping 192.168.2.1
PING 192.168.2.1 (192.168.2.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.2.100 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
Looks like my PC, which has Slackware 13.0, don't know how to reach the modem even they are physically connected.
1. how can I configure the modem, PC, and router so that the PC can reach the router? Do I need to do add route gateway from the PC?
2. How can I configure internet connection from the PC (before I use PPPoE)?
3. How can I configure the modem, PC, and router so that the wireless network is on?

I'm at a family member's house for the holiday and was trying to use their wifi. Its a WEP connection (I tried to tell them to change but they won't listen). In the wicd connection manager, I see their network, set the encryption to WEP (passphrase), enter the password, and hit connect. It says bringing up the card, checking authentication, then gets to Acquiring IP address, sits there for a minute, then times out saying unable to connect.
I know I used the right password because it passed the Authenticating part (tested with a wrong password that hangs at this point). I know that my wifi card works because I used a store's unsecured wifi connection through wicd. I know the wifi network works because my brother's windows netbook can get on just fine. I'm running through the same router right now with a wire instead. Why I can't connect wirelessly?

(*) Can not open web pages via IP address.
(*) Can ping internal hardware no problem.
(*) I can connect to the Internet via Ethernet no problem.
(*) I used to be able to connect via wireless on this computer. No settings changed in the interim.
(*) Several other computers currently connected & accessing Internet via the same wireless - no problem.
(*) Based on other posts, I disabled the avahi daemon, but this had no effect.

At work, we (like almost everyone) are still full-on windows. I am currently trying to get away from windows because I am not a fan. my current windows machine (different from my Ubuntu machine) is accessing the wireless network fine, and there are no obvious problems there. Also, my Ubuntu machine can access my wireless network at home, so I know there are no driver issues. I set up the connection for the Ubuntu machine, and it seems to be connecting OK. I can ping internal IPs and by all statuses, the connection to the router is functioning. However, when I attempt to load a web page or ping a domain or external IP, it fails. I tried to ping the IP, thinking if that worked, it's probably the DNS, but pinging both domains or IPs fails. I have looked around at forums and posts, but none of them seem to match my issue (that's probably not true, but I am struggling to see the commonality).
Here are the results of "netstat -r":
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.45.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 wlan0
default 192.168.45.5 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0
And here is "ifconfig":
wlan0 Link encao:Ethernet HWaddr 74:f0:6d:XX:XX:XX
inet addr:192.168.45.49 Bcast:192.168.45.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

I have had a heck of a time trying to get my laptop running ubuntu to connect to my home network. I have managed to get it to work at my university which would seemingly be more difficult than getting it to work at home, so I know for a fact it isn't a hardware or driver issue. If I try to connect via ethernet cable from my router, it detects that I connected the cable but says "disconnected" and never lets me connect. If I SKIP the router and go from my modem directly to my laptop via ethernet cable it works great.
Using the wireless network tool I can see all of the wireless connections in my area. When I go to connect to my network it prompts me for the WEP key and when I enter it and hit connect it just keeps cycling and eventually times out and finally again prompts me for my WEP key. I know this network works as it works just fine on my Windows 7 partition. Another interesting note - both my wireless and ethernet connections both worked flawlessly and stoopid easily on the live cd but don't after the full install.
If I manually enter in the information for my wireless through IPv4 settings and enter in the Address,Netmask and gateway I can connect to my network - but then I have no active internet connection. Same deal with my wired connection. Is this because choosing this manual method grays out the DHCP?

I think something weird is going on. On a fresh installation of 11.04, I seem to be connected to my router just fine, but I can't reach the internet or anywhere else on my network. Anybody see my problem from what I've posted? The computer is only connected via wireless (so I don't know why eth0 would be connected as well). I can't think of what I'm missing...My system seems to be connected to my router on two interfaces. "ip addr" gives:
Code:
1: lo <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
