Networking :: How To Set Up Web And File Server?

Jan 2, 2011

I've spent the better part of 2 months trying to simply use an old box to set up as a web and file server with no luck. If you search my posts you'll see many problems encountered. I'd like to use Ubuntu Server and install XFCE while I learn command line methods. Can anyone give any suggestions or point to any HOW-TO's that actually work? This is beyond absurd and frustrating because I can't even get basic commands to work (route, config files, etc.)

Networking :: Pug Server File Server No Longer Shares Drive To Windows?

Nov 19, 2009

My Pug Server has worked faithfully for many years just sitting in a closet. It is designed wo that you never need to add a monitor or keyboard as it is administered through a web interface. Recently it had a problem with the motherboard and I had to replace it, but the machine is now working. However, it no longer is visible as a network drive on my Windows machine.Unfortunately I have no idea where to start looking to see what the problem is. I did attach a keyboard and monitor and logged on, but everything looks okay (I can see my files, etc.).

This is an old machine (c. 2003), so has an old version of Linux (I have no idea what version, or even how to find out). Since it is never meant to be used directly it doesn't have any GUI installed, so I have to do everything using command line.Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can even start to determine what the problem is or how I can go about trying to fix it? At this point I would be happy just to get the files out and replace it with a newer NAS.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup A Server 10.04 Lts As File Server?

Apr 3, 2011

I set up a ubuntu server 10.04 lts as file server in a network filled with xp, win 2003 and win 2008.

I noticed that if from any bill's SO machine i copy a file (for example a vob file of 1gb, or a lot of doc and pdf files) in the samba server, while the copy is in progress if in another windows I browse other folders shared in Samba, the copy process stops and say ' the name in the network is no more available( or something like this). It seems that samba pay attention on the fact that a user is browsing the share and doing so it seems that Samba forget that in one of its share there was a copy in progress, very annoing. A file server cannot do that, in this way is useless.

Ubuntu Networking :: File Server Between 2 Networks?

I have configured both eth0 and eth1 for the networks that they are connected on. currently only eth0 works. When I configured eth1 for some reason It shows that it was last used "never".Is there a way to keep these networks separate and share these files from this server?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Simple File Server With AD PDC?

Sep 15, 2010

I am trying to deploy a very simple file server in my company's network. The goal is just to have a file server with DAT backup, nothing more.I managed to configure Samba to show a share visible in the Windows network, with free read and write to everyone. For this I configured "Autentication Mode = user", and read/write access to all users in the specified share.

Of course, I would like to have the possibility to establish permissions based in AD-users. For that, I tried to add my CentOS machine to AD.I followed the guide in:

[URL]

I can get the kerberos "kinit" command to autenticate in Windows AD: I can access the Windows machines in the network as administrator and "klist" shows the valid ticket. But, when trying the "join", I always get the "No logon servers" error.I googled around for this, and it seems that this is a common error and there is no "magic approach" for it...

So, my questions are:

- Can this be achieved only by the Samba configuration tool (Gui)? I think not, as we need to change kerberos settins

- What would be the correct settings for krb5.conf?

- Are there any other services/files needed to adjust?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up Samba File Server?

Nov 27, 2010

I'm trying to set up an old computer that was donated to my by an aunt to hold my external hard drives and use it as a file server so i can use them from anywhere within my house. However I can not seem to get the samba server to broadcast/be seen by my ubuntu installation, nor my windows installation.

I've read the manual, to an extent, but I feel as if I am missing something. All I want is to have it to where I can just type in \server and bring up my files to access without having to worry about passwords.

Here is the config file:

Code:

netbios name = GrenadingBadger

Ubuntu Networking :: File Server On 10.04 Machine - Slow Samba

Both computers can access the web at 800+KBps. I've also checked with an OS X machine on the same network, which was also extremely slow, so I'm fairly sure that the problem is on the server's side.

Networking :: Samba Shares On Server - Nagging File / Foldername

I can still access the folder this way, but it would be nice to not have Samba mangle the folder name this way. I am using Samba 3.4.2 on an Athlon64 X2 system running Slackware64.

Ubuntu Networking :: Home File Server - Read / Write Compatibility

Jan 30, 2011

I've been a Xubuntu/Ubuntu/Lubuntu hobby user for about 18 months now. I started using Linux as a way to revive older computers provide a backup and expand my knowledge of computing. The command line was something new to me but as long as I can find detailed directions on how to do what I want I can usually manage. I set up a Samba server for my home shared network and now I'd like to make the shared drives of that server accessible from outside my network. Via ssh or ftp or some program of the like. I'd like to have it user name and password protected. Configurable user rights would be nice. (read/write/delete/etc) As well as novice user friendly.

My end goal is a server with read/write capability that I will be able to access from work or a friends house or anywhere with an Internet connection and my laptop. I understand about port forwarding and have done so with my home network behind an AT&T U-verse router/modem. I've researched openssh and some ftp setups but they seem like they can be difficult. Now for the questions. Is this task something that can be accomplished without a degree in computer networking? Is there a program(s) that would make this a simpler task? Is this more complex than its worth? How would I go about setting up such a thing?

Now, how do I connect, or map out that folder from another ubuntu 11.04 machine? Ubuntu Networking :: NFS Server Exporting NTFS Partition Giving Stale File Error?

Apr 3, 2010

I'm trying to setup a small network between my old and new laptops to transfer my personal data. They are now linked with a crossover cable and they see each other. The old one has a dual-boot setup with WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10.The new one with Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10.I tried samba but it was very slow even using Windows in both computers: maximum transfer rates were about 1,5 Mib/sec.I tried SSH using ubuntu on both pcs and it is reliable and much faster, 5 Mib/sec. But I wanted more...I installed the NFS server on the old one and exported the NTFS partition where my data resides with sync and ro options.

I installed the NFS client on the new one and i'm able to mount the remote partition. Now, when I transfer my files I get very high speed, more than 10 Mib/sec but after a while I get a "Stale NFS file handler" error but I really didn't touch any file in the old pc and the connection is always up.Searching on the web I found that NFS had some troubles exporting NTFS partitions in the past but should be fully compatible with them since the last versions of ubuntu.

Ubuntu Networking :: HTTP POST File Uploads On PCs - Getting 500 Internal Server Error Message

Sep 23, 2010

We're having an issue with HTTP POST file uploads on our two Ubuntu PCs. For some reason, whenever one of our users attempts to submit a file in an HTML form, the request times out, usually with a 500 Internal Server Error message. This problem is not limited to one site, but occurs on all sites that use file uploads. Also, the problem does not appear to be with our network, as a Windows 7 PC on the same network can upload files to the same sites without any difficulties. The problem is not browser-specific; we have tested with Firefox, Epiphany, and Google Chrome and all produce the same results. The issue is relatively new, and was first observed within the last month; before this time, both machines had no problems uploading files.

Does anyone have ANY idea what could be causing this? I've tried a number of things, including rebooting the PCs, rebooting the network, disabling IPv6, etc. I'm not very experienced in Linux system administration, but I can use the terminal and am familiar with some terminal-based diagnostic tools, so if you need any additional info or want me to try something, please let me know! I've exhausted my own computer knowledge with regards to finding a solution to this problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Folder Access While Setting Up Ubuntu As File Server

Oct 8, 2010

I am fairly new to Linux, dabbled with it over the years but am a experienced windows user so not a complete noob. I am setting up Ubuntu 10.04 as a file server following a tutorial in Linux User and Developer mag which is great but having a bit of a problem getting it to work correctly.I have two folders in the OPT directory and they can only be accessed by using the main username and password for the linux machine when logging on through my Win 7 machine, if I try and access the directory called 'alex' using the Alex username/password I can log into the folder but only have read only access.

I think (but am not sure) it has something to do with setting the ownership permissions of the folders ..

part of the step after creating the directory was

# sudo chown -R root:users /opt/alex

and that didn't seem to work, it wouldn't allow me access as either user so I did

# sudo chown -R root:grae /opt/alex

grae is the main user and so that user has access but the user called alex doesn't .Can anyone advise? I am sure you need more info so please let me know what would help you see what the problem is
