CentOS 5 Networking :: Simple File Server With AD PDC?

I am trying to deploy a very simple file server in my company's network.The goal is just to have a file server with DAT backup, nothing more.I managed to configure Samba to show a share visible in the Windows network, with free read and write to everyone. For this I configured "Autentication Mode = user", and read/write access to all users in the specified share.
Of course, I would like to have the possibility to establish permissions based in AD-users. For that, I tried to add my CentOS machine to AD.I followed the guide in:

I can get the kerberos "kinit" command to autenticate in Windows AD: I can access the Windows machines in the network as administrator and "klist" shows the valid ticket.But, when trying the "join", I always get the "No logon servers" error.I googled around for this, and it seems that this is a common error and there is no "magic approach" for it...
So, my questions are:
- Can this be achieved only by the Samba configuration tool (Gui)? I think not, as we need to change kerberos settins
- What would be the correct settings for krb5.conf?
- Are there any other services/files needed to adjust?

Gentlemen/Ladies; I checked the existing information on this site and found that it is pretty widespread and confusing to me. I am a Linux Newbie so please be patient. I use Mandriva Linux 10.0 and want to setup a simple file server. I also want to connect a Windows XP computer to access files on the Linux server. I have a spare router I can use. My ultimate goal is to learn MySQL and PHP programming; I am pursuing a Web Development curriculum at a local University but am just starting out.
Am I making sense and can I do it with the equipment I have? Can you point me to some resources,documents, etc. I can use to accomplish this?

I would like to set the firewall in Ubuntu Server 10.10 up to be very secure but perform these tasks:
1. File server to windows 7 and windows xp machines both over ethernet and wireless via a router.
2. Print server for these 2 machines.
3. Auto backup these 2 machines.
So far I have set the server up with a static ip, do the 2 windows machines need static ip's as well? I don't need remote access to the server, only over the lan. I thought this may be all I needed to do:

I have two web servers. One is active and one is in reserve. I keep the user data (web pages) in sync by running rsync every 10 minutes or so. This copies any changes from the active machine to the reserve machine. But, it's slow, only gets changes every 10 minutes, bogs down the disk, does strange things to files that are changing during the rsync process etc...
I want something that will automatically copy any changes from the active server to the reserve server as they are made. IE I hit 'save' on the active server, it copies the file to the reserve server. Simple!
I've been looking around and I see GFS which is really vastly more complicated than I need. I'm happy with read-only access on the reserve host, so I don't need distributed lock management.
I could theoretically implement this by setting inotify watchers on every file and running an SCP or rsync command when a file gets saved. So, it can't be that hard.
I do not need a true networked file system, as in something I mount over the network. I just want something to keep my disks in sync.

Quite often I need someone to transfer a file to my laptop, and it's often different OS to different OS, and setting file-sharing, sshd/ssh, ftpd/ftp, and whatever else not is often not worth it. A USB key is also not always handy or big enough.
But, it's easy to be on the same network, just hard to get service working on top of it in less than 3 minutes if you've never dealt with that person's computer before.
What I was thinking would be the simplest thing would be if I could run apache, and have a very simple web script that simply allows file uploads. Something that would serve a web page that has a "choose file" button which brings up the file dialog, pretty standard I guess. I wouldn't say no to a few more functions on top of that.
Given that, does anyone know of a simple apache modules, or a web server script (language doesn't matter) that would allow for this?

I am having a time at trying to get a simple FTP setup to my Var/www/html folder for my canned Joomla website. I can log in anon with no write permissions, but it will not log in using any users I have setup on the server. I've googled a bunch, but nothing to correct my 530 authentication failure when I try to log in as one of my user accounts for the server.

Its 2 weeks i'm trying to configure freeradius2 on centos5 64bit after installed it from yum.all seems working, but i cant authenticate unix users.after digging in many sites its simply cant find user name and password ( ++[unix] returns notfound )Also how can i paste here all the radiusd -X log lines? i can't find any
radius.log file.

I have two computers on my home lan I am trying to share files between...My desktop which is running Ubuntu Server 10.10 (x64) with a GUI, and my laptop which is running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04. I have tried a million different tutorials regarding SAMBA setup, but they never work.
In addition, most of those tutorials are geared towards hybrid Linux/Windows environment. I do not have any microsoft product in my home. I have created the share on my server, but I'm not sure how to connect to it from the laptop (once again at this point in the tutorials it explains how to access it from a Windows PC). I tried using the menu doing this:
Places-->Connect To Server-->Service Type-->Windows Share (for the server I tried my server hostname and IP) to no avail. Does anyone know of a recent step by step tutorial for setting up a complete Ubuntu environment? Is there a simpler method I can use since I do not particularly need to use SMB protocol?
All I want to do is share my music folder from my server so I can access it (from the same LAN) on my laptop...Arrrghhh frustrating.

I want users to be able to go to a web site, request an account (which I should be able to accept or reject), and upload/download/manage files in a web-based (preferably ajax-y) file manager. I am running an application that requires use of my /etc/hosts file. In it, I have my machine name and its LAN ip address. The program creates a service on a specific port, then attempts to connect to it based on the host name. So my hosts file has to be correct.I added the nameservers to resolv.conf and now my application will not run. My guess is that the computer is checking the name servers first, timing out then checking the hosts file.Is there a way I can tell the system to check the hosts file first, then DNS. I thought it should behave that way by default, but it does not appear to.

What i want to be able to do is create a custom kickstart for my centOS 5 server. I want to create a bootable cd that I can pop in my server and basically walk away for 45 minutes and I come back and its fully installed. All the directions I have read so far tell me that I have to create a seperate ks.cfg and then I need my original centos cd to get it booted. Then the cd will ask for where the ks.cfg file is and I have to type the location. I just want to pop the CD in and type in linux_clean or something and have it perform a custom install based on the information and specification in my ks.cfg. How can I go about doing this?

we need to log web access of a certain set of users for analysis. We decided to setup a proxy server which just logs all the requests but does not do anything else like caching/access control etc.All users will be using a fixed set of computers and hence we can redirect their requests to the proxy. I came across Squid, but found it to be too heavy for our requirements. Is there any other proxy-server software that is good enough for what we want or is Squid the only way?

I have a CentOS + Samba server and Windows XP client machines. Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine.When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. I cannot access the server file (prompted again and again to enter user name and password). What did i miss

I have a weird performance issue with a centos 5 running a nfs server and a rh8 client. I think the fact that it is rh8 client should be downplayed. It is just that with rh8 client the performance degradation seems more clear. See test details below OS in server is Centos 5 x86_64 kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5
1Gb connection between machines File to test over NFS is a 1GB file. First of all I wanted to measure how the network alone performs while using NFS. So in the server side I run a "cat" command on the 1GB file to /dev/null. Please note that the disk read speed is about 98MBs. At this point the file system has the 1GB file cached in memory. In the client side a "cat" on the same file gives me a speed of about 113MBs. It seems then that the bottleneck in this instance is the network and it is very close to nominal speed. So the network performance is really good. (BTW I know that the server got that file from cache because a vmstat or iostat shows no disk activity.)
The second test is reading from disk with no caching involve. In the server I flushed the 1GB file from the memory. For instance by reading another 5GB file and I repeat the same thing as above in the client (a cat on the 1GB file). Now, the server has to go to disk.(vmstat or iostat shows the disk activity). However the performance, now, is about 20MBs, I was expecting something closer so 90MBs. (since the reading speed in the server in the first test showed 98MBs).
This second test was repeated for ext2, ext3, xfs with no significant differences. A similar test using a RH8 NFS server and client gets me close to 60MBs for a 1GB file not cache by the file system in the serverSince network speeds and disk read speeds are not the bottlenecks ... what or where is the limiting factor then?

I'm researching about symbolic links been used with samba / CIFS:I'd like that the user that uses a MS-Windows OS could see my shared folder on CentOS 5 and the symbolic links that are inside this folder. Well, it works but, the user will see that the size of the file is bigger than the real file. Apparently, CIFS gets the size of the symbolic link (aproxim.32K) and add it to the size of the file.Example 1: 100KB file, used with shared folder, MS-Windows's user will see 100KBExample 2: 100KB file, used with symbolic link inside a shared folder, MS-Windows's user will see 132KB. I have a centos 5 system with openldap configured. I need openldap for simple user authentication. ie.. to be able to use it for authenticating it from remote applications and systems like mail clients...etc.
I was able to succefully install and configure openldap and ran a slaptest to verify the slapd.conf file for errors and found none. so now all i want to do is to add username and passwords to the ldap database.
iam just not sure what all objectClasses i need to use for Attributes uid and userPassword and what exactly should be the ldif file syntax for the above entries. I tried various sources but i do either get errors while adding or after adding do get errors trying to access it.
above all, iam able to access the ldap server from my phpldapadmin only as a anonymous user and not as a root user that i added as a first entry.

I am trying to write a simple client that opens a secure connection. My intent is to use the OpenSSL library.
I am following this tutorial: [URL]... The tutorial mentions that I need a trust certificate store called TrustStore.pem. However, I can't find that on my machine. Is there a way to generate it? I separately downloaded the source from the OpenSSL website. The source distribution doesn't have it either. There is a whole bunch of .pem files. Can I use any one of them?

I would like to a build a CD image (of CentOS 5, x86_64 that loads into memory and boots to the OS without installing anything to hard drives. Then I would like the system to execute a shell script automatically. The shell script will have commands that will control execution.
The goal of this exercise is basically to pre-configure a system (RAID config, BIOS update, etc) automatically using the shell script before installing the OS. I would like the ability to change the shell script as needed and probably repackage the ISO image. I would prefer not to deal with building a source tree to accomplish this. this is something one could do using mkisofs.

I wrote a script which analysis apache logs. This script generates a tab separated data file. There is two columns in the data. The first column is a file name accessed from remote. The second column shows how many times a file access.
I am looking for a linux command drawing a chart corresponding data.of course, I know that I can draw the chart in OpenOffice Calc. That's not what I need. Because there is some steps to do for a simple chart drawing. If there is a command line tool, then I can write a script that drawing a chart when the data file is updated.
