Is there any tools in linux same as "http-ping. This tool shows for any request :
1-The HTTP return code (and its brief textual description)
2-The number of bytes returned by the server (excluding headers)
3-The time taken to complete the request (i.e. round-trip time)
I have a large amout of data (several GB) on a remote drive, that is transparently mounted via nfs. I'd like to copy these files into a subdirectory of where they are already residing, so everything stays on the same physical disk. For that reason, I would like to prevent an unnecessary round trip over the network.
It seems that cp files* subdir does the naive thing and reads all the data into memory and then writes it back. Is that true? Is there a special command that does the actual copying entirely on the server the disk is physically connected to?
So we have DNS round robin set up for 4 servers. If we ping dns name (basically an alias) server_connect it resolves with different IP address in round robin format. I.E. x.x.x.1 x.x.x.2 for the 4 different server IP addresses. When we do nslookup server_connect it will come back first time as server1_connect server2_connect through server4_connect so the server is able to resolve through ping and nslookup resolving the initial dns name (alias) to the dns name associated in the round robin. Problem is when we try to connect with http or telnet it comes back host unrecognized. I can put one of the 4 round robin servers in /etc/hosts and it connects fine so I'm thinking that either one of three things.
1) ttl
2) It does double connection first to identify itself to the round robin server and then handshake but second time it hits for the handshake the IP and dns name is different than what it expected so it fails.
3) Since we are trying to telnet to dns alias and it is returning different dns name it fails.
2 and 3 seem most promising but now I'm at a stand still.Anyone else come across this issue and if so how did you resolve.
My problem is the following:I can only connect to the internet and download through the FTP, but not through HTTP.I am in a hospital at this moment and have a netbook (Lemote Yeelong). Also there is a computer here with internet access.I would like to access the internet by using the cable from the computer.I configured my netbook just like the local computer (same host name, same MAC address, DHCP), just to be sure.I can ping google.com and I also can download from ftp.debian.org though ftp.However, when I try to connect to google.com through epiphany, it just loads and loads without success

I've explored hosts.deny, /var/log/secure and even turned iptables off to see if it would fix anything. To no avail. Here's what my ssh login attempt looks like:

I am using an virtual machine. where I need to ping from one machine to another. earlier I was able to ping. But after going to google.com once, I cannot ping back to this machine.
But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.
my internet used to work with no problems at all, but then I went on vacations to Spain, and since I came back to france, my computer doesn't want to connect to internet from my house.It doesn't find the wireless connection and now not even the regular wire connection works! I have to admit that while I was in Spain, the computer aked me to install some updates and I did! now, I just have no idea of how to make it work!

Now, my first issue is that I need to be able to see results real-time as well.
Is there a way one can print to BOTH a screen and output? If one uses the ">>" command, it is essentially sending everything to the file. Running another ping command in parallel is not an option.
I have a dedicated host on my lan to monitor other hosts/services using Nagios. I'm in the process of migrating to Zabbix on that host to perform the same purpose. Both Nagios and Zabbix monitor icmp ping latency (Nagios uses ping, Zabbix uses fping) and over time the latency to other hosts grows until threshold alarms are triggered. In one week, the average latency grows from sub-millisecond to over 100 milliseconds, and continues to grow until the Nagios host is rebooted. I have verified the latency numbers using ping/fping from the command line on the Nagios host.
The problem is that pings from the monitored hosts to the Nagios host show normal latency at the time the Nagios host is showing high latency from itself to the monitored hosts. The Nagios host and monitored hosts are all connected to the same Dell 24 port gigabit switch. I already posted this question on the Zabbix forums with a graph of the latency but there were no answers. I've got two routers, 10.0.0.0/23 and 192.168.2.0/24, which are joined by a Linux box with interfaces eth0 (10.0.0.2) and ra0 (192.168.2.2). I've got masquerading for ra0, and a route to 192.168.2.0/24 on 10.0.0.0's router. I CAN ping hosts on 192.168.2.0 from 10.0.0.0 just fine, but I CANNOT access web pages.Strangely, If I enable masquerading on eth0, and add a route to 192.168.2.0s router to 10.0.0.0, I can ping AND access web pages from 192.168.2.0Here is my current iptables

I'm trying to configure my Red Hat server to use port bonding for two interfaces going to a switch, and I followed this redhat guide [URL]...-redhat-server but when I attempt to bring the bond up, it simply uses mode 0 (round robin) instead of mode 1, which I specifically configured in /etc/modprobe.conf by doing

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.
When I type (in new 10.10) soem cmdline comands like "ls -l" then some of the directories have a different fore-and background color (e.g. black on green) while the remaining other directoreis are blue on white.
Where can I find out the meaning of the diferent colors and how can I change them?
If I go to menu
Terminal->Edit->Profile Preferences->Color
then I can set only the full overall background and foreground color. But here only certain parts have a different color. the main color (black on white) is suitable. I do not use system theme.
I just installed my first EVER bind DNS server. I am running bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to be working great except one thing: If I ping a host that I have set up in bind by its HOSTNAME the pings take 5-6 seconds to reply/print to the screen between each echo response. If I ping by the host's IP address, they echo back very quickly.
I have read that IPv6 can cause this, but I have disabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf and the problem still exists.
I know everyone says this can't be a DNS issue, but this never was an issue with dnsmasq (which i was using prior), and it doesn't make sense that the ping are ONLY slow when pinging by hostname and not IP.

So, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address.But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have Mandriva One 2009.0 (192.168.1.100) on one box and Mandriva Free 2010.0 (192.168.1.118) on the other. I can ping router (192.168.1.1) from both of these boxes but I can't ping one box to the other and the other way around. What's going on?.

Iam using socket programming in one of my problem. The scenario is like this.
=>one module is working as a socket server(process p1) is able to handle client sockets on that port.
=>one module is working as socket client (process p2) is connected to server socket and Tx/Rx data on this socket. This module has some more threads, based on received data from server socket it will connect to http on other thread and get information...
=>one more module is working as socket client (process p3) is also connected to server socket and doing some other transactions.
Here my problem is when in presence of p2, p3 http connection taking more time than the expected. If we wont start p3(means only one server-client socket) then http connection is fast enough.

X GB 3 Primary Windows partitions, 125 GB unnallocated, 50GB /home, 6 GB .boot, 4 GB SWAP
Ok, why would I want to do that? I ask because while Ubuntu boots fast at just under 1 minute at the end of my hard drive (90Mbps, I had it install from "end" when I partitioned the boot file), Windows boots slowly at about 2.5 minutes on the inside of my drive (23sh Mbps). To be able to switch between them would be useful for iTunes, ProEngineer, Matlab, and other stuff that is Windows based. Windows boots much faster from hibernation. I love Ubuntu, the speed and simplicity and the actual FRIENDLY atmosphere (what a concept WINDOWS) But I find myself needing to do some quick editing in Windows, then I can go back to my business on Ubuntu. Is there some kind of selective boot managing like GRUB that I can bring up after telling one to hibernate? Because once on SWAP, it should hold relatively indefinitely until I return, right??
Any ideas??? It sounds like some clever Terminal coding could manage the Linux side of the booting, but Windows might have to be tricked into a selective boot..

I can ping fedora from xp computer but i can't able to ping xp from fedora computer.
I have manully edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file with correct subnet mask and ip address because when i tried to give ip address manully in network manager the subnetmask is replaced with gateway address don't know why.
Now i want to share internet through crossover cable . xp is connected to internet through wireless usb adapeter.

I installed Nagios on my Ubuntu 10.04 server using apt-get and when I accessed the web console, everything was OK. I made some changes to apache (creating some new virtual sites) and since then Nagios gives me a warning message for HTTP with the message, HTTP WARNING: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found. The sites that I created are working perfectly. I noticed that the attemps are 4/4. Does this need to be reset or does Nagios automatically reset that once it detects the issue is resolved?

Anytime it gets to where i can use it as a live DVD and I would want to install, it gets to stage 3 of 7 and gets stuck. No error messages are given, the install dialog can be minimized and other task done but the installation will never continue. Anyone with idea about how to go round it.
