Debian Multimedia :: Xfce 4.6 Won't Remember Desktop Settings
Mar 3, 2011My Googling about this said to make sure xfdesktop was running. I have.Changes made to the panel, to startup and session persist.But number of workplaces, wallpaper, font, theme and so on revert to what they were before. These settings are from when I used Xfce before in Ubuntu 8.04. (My /home dir is on its own partition and I like to keep all my config files for apps I have used and might want to again.)I suspect I might need to delete a config file but I'd rather not undo all of the other settings that do work. Which? Or is it something else?

Aug 19, 2010I cane never decide on a single wallpaper so I managed to put together this little script, mostly by stealing from other people, and have it run on start up.The first and most important is that my computer doesn't remember the settings for each picture, it just uses whatever the previous settings were. Is there a way to fix this? and the second very minor problem is that sometimes the script uses no picture so I just have whatever backround color was set as the wallpaper.

Feb 18, 2010When I plugin a 2nd monitor, the display settings in Configure Desktop allows me to change the display mode to single expanded screen versus duplicate desktop. However, after restart the computer, I have to do that again. I can understand that if I un-plug the 2nd monitor, it should intelligently switch to a single screen mode. But if I don't, it should remember it.
Make the matter worse, if I am in single span screen mode (1 desktop on 2 monitors) and I unplug the monitor while the computer is running, it would not know how to switch back, even in the Display settings of Configure Desktop saying it's in the single monitor mode. This means application and mouse can freely be pushed way over that area of the screen (hidden). I write free software too, and I don't let obvious bugs like this creep into a major distribution like OpenSuse 11.2. It just gives a bad image for OpenSuse and open source in general.
Slackware :: Just Installed The Nvidia Driver And Now It Won't Remember My Settings
Mar 15, 2010I finally got around to installing the Nvidia driver (gotten from Slackbuilds.org).
Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, but it wants to default to 1280x1024 resolution and we prefer 1024x768 on our old 17" CRT monitor.
No matter what I do, though, it starts up in 1280x1024. We start X from runlevel 3 and go into KDE 4.3.1.
It is not difficult to change to 1024x768 using the Nvidia configuration utility, but then the menu fonts are HUGE -- especially in Thunderbird and Firefox.

May 4, 2010Every time that the internet connection is lost (because of hibernating etc.) I have to re-enter the password for the router. It used to remember this but for some reason it doesn't any more.

Jun 3, 2010I need to set up a little virtual network with Debian Lenny guests (the host is Debian Squeeze, but I don't think it matters). I installed Lenny in a VM and it works fine. Then I cloned the hard drive, garion@Laptop:~$ VBoxManage clonevdi Linux 1.vdi Linux 2.vdi created a new VM with exactly the same settings as the first one and booted the new disc. The problem is that there's no eth0 in the new VM, but it is in the original one. Also if I "unplug" the cable, dmesg won't notice anything. In the original VM it works fine. They both have the same virtual network card: PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973). I've also tried NAT as well as internal network settings.

Dec 12, 2015I had some issues with nvidia drivers, and removed all of the packages using
Code: Select allrm /etc/X11/xorg.conf and Code: Select allapt-get purge nvidia*
Upon reboot, I was back with nouveau drivers and proceeded to reinstall nvidia drivers according to [URL] .....
Code: Select allapt-get install nvidia-driver
apt-get install nvidia-xconfig
I can then change my refresh rate using
Code: Select allnvidia-settings
but when I hit "Save to X configuration file", I get the following output in terminal:

Package xorg-server was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-server.pc'

As a result, my nvidia preferences aren't saved across reboot.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Network - Can't Get The IP From Dhcp Server (TW-EA510) And Static Settings Doesn't Work
Feb 16, 2011I'm having mysterious wired network problem with my Karmic/9.10 machine. It hasn't been in network a while, but now I finally got the cabling done. I can't get the IP from dhcp server (TW-EA510), and static settings doesn't work either. Fresh cabling showed OK 1Gb connection on tester, and win7 laptop works fine. I even tried with long cable though the rooms, but it doesn't help, so it definately isn't the new cabling.

Motherboard is some old Lanparty with two ethernet ports, NVidia CK804 and Marvell 88E800 rev 13 Gigabit netwok adapters, neither of them works. At least another of them has been worked earlier when I last got it wired. It's been a while, so I'm not sure which one of them and with different router if that matters.

May 13, 2010I hate to make a new thread for something that has probably already been solved, but searching through all the threads can be a challenge in itself.Every time I log in to Ubuntu 10.04 I am asked for the password to my Wi-Fi connection. About a week ago it was working fine, however after, I think, the second update Ubuntu was longer able to remember the password. Its not a major problem as I can access the Internet its just really inconvenient.

I enter it, and it connects perfectly. And then 5 minutes later, it'll prompt me again. How do you instruct NM to remember a password, and stop prompting?

If I get 2 consecutive packets from the same address and port from 192.168.100.0/24, they get SNAT-ed and come out of the same port on 10.1.1.1. If then I get another packet from the same address and port 10 minutes later, then it gets SNAT-ed, but comes out of a different port on 10.1.1.1. How can I set the time delay I would like iptables to remember its incoming address/port to outgoing port mappings?

These service accounts are responsible for running processes which are invoked as services.When these services created new files, I need them to be created with the permissions 664 (UMASK 002).I edited the /etc/profile umask setting to reflect this. I see that now my user account creates files which reflect this new umask setting, but the service accounts do not when I manually created files using their accounts (sudo -u serviceaccount touch newfile).

However, after saving the settings to xorg.conf (using the nvidia-settings application) X should use both monitors after boot, but only the main monitor is used. I first thought that X didn't read xorg.conf at all, but when I put some illegal statements into the file X wouldn't start and gave an error about the illegal statements. It is thus clear that X does read the file, but it just doesn't seem to use the settings in it.

1. desktop > gnome > session, the required_components_list is [windowmanager,filemanager,panel]
2. desktop > gnome > session > required_components_list, the panel value is "gnome-panel"
Yet gnome-panel does not load at startup. Any ideas why?Clarification: I can get gnome-panel to load by listing it under Startup Applications, but I am curious why it won't load via the gconf settings.
Ubuntu :: Firefox - Open Pdf Files - Doesn't Record Settings About Preferred Applications
Jul 28, 2011lately I'm experiencing a few issues with Firefox 5.0 on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. First of all, when I try to open pdf files, I often get a black page and I've to try to reload it many times before I can effectively read the pdf (even for small-size ones).
Secondly Firefox doesn't record settings about my preferred applications. If, for example, I want a file .torrent to be opened by deluge I have to enter manually /usr/bin/deluge because by default it would be opened by gedit. No matter if I select "use as default application" the next time the issue will be present again.
