Networking :: Box With 3 Dedicated IP's All Returning The Same Single IP Address?
Jan 20, 2010
I have a linux box, which was given to me by a company with 3 dedicated IP addresses. My goal was to setup ssh tunnels on all three dedicated IP Addresses.
Via Putty, i am successfully able to create a tunnel to the box's on IP1 IP2 and IP3 - that is i can make incoming connections on all three IP's.
However, my problem lies when i attempt to USE the tunnel. AIn all instances, regardless of the IP i actually tunneled into the box with, it returns IP1 as an outgoing connection, i.e if i setup IE to use the tunnel, it will return my IP as IP1, even though i have created the tunenl via IP2/IP3.
What id liek to accomplish is that when i create a tunnel via IP1, then outgoing connections go via IP1, and when i create a tunnel via IP2, then outgoping connectiosn go via Ip2 etc.
After discussing this with a colleague of mine, he infomed me he had the same problem at one point, and that some configuration on the box was required - however he was unable to recall.

I have software with a newsletter system - but because I have 16 clients per server they are currently all sending emails from the same (eth0) IP address DESPITE having a DEDICATED ip address per client account for their WEB address. If one spams (or gets spam complaints) then they all suffer - and I'd love to send their email via their unique IP address to stop this problem and to make the IP match their domain which has to be better at getting through spam filters anyway I'd have thought...

I'm building a very small netbootable client, using a stripped down custom kernel and busybox v.1.18.4 (stable) with the embedded ifconfig and udhcpc applets
after startup, the initrd is loaded, and the proc, sys, dev and pts folders are properly created and mounted.
/proc/net/dev properly contain eth0 as an ethernet device.
in the init script I execute a background call to udhcpc passing the dhcp.script properly to udhcpc, and dhcp.script is then executed when the bound event occurs.
what I cant get past is udhcpc is passing back the interface evironment variable as etho0 (thats, 'eth' lowercase 'o' and a zero '0', when it should be passing 'eth0', thats 'eth' and zero '0')
I know I could hardcode the eth0, but i was hoping for a somewhat smarter system.

I am trying to run two web servers (Virtual Hosts) on a single Linux Centos 5.5 box with a single IP address 192.168.0.182. I did all the pre-installation requirements such yum install mysql, yum install mysqladmin, service httpd start, service mysqld start etc etc.In /var/www/html directory, I have two folder called server1 and server2. These two folders have the necessary web server php script files and folders. I opened the browser and managed to install the script on one web server successfully. When I put the IP address 192.168.0.182 on the browser address bar, the page loads without any problem. Now I would like to be able to install the other web server script and I don't know how to?Here is my httpd configuration;
<VirtualHost *>
DocumentRoot /var/www/html/server1
ServerName development.mysite.com

I want to configure multiple virtual ethernet interfaces over a single physical ethernet interface (eth0) and for each virtual interface the MAC address must be unique and the IP address must be Static. Finally all the virtual interfaces must be able to communicate both internally and externally and the traffic should be captured using wireshark.
I need to have such kind of setup to communicate devices individually using one physical ethernet device.
Because I was fiddling with few kernel modules like MACVLAN and MACVTAP and successfully enabled those modules and rebuild kernel. Using macvlan and macvtap I can configure virtual interfaces with unique mac address and static IPs but while capturing packets using wireshark interfaces behave weirdly.
For example say on HOST machine I have 1 physical interface and created 3 virtual interfaces as shown below.
Interfaces :
eth0 (physical ethernet interface)
IP: 192.168.A.A
MAC: aa:aa:aa:aa:aa:aa
[Code] ....
First from above interfaces I started pinging eth0 internally from host machine in which it worked as usually.
Second I did same externally from other machine which is connected to the same network of Host machine, and this did work as usually.
Third I pinged first virtual interface veth0 both internally and externally and this also works and after that I did check source and destination MAC address using wireshark tool-where both showed up there respective MAC address.
Now triggers the issue, where I pinged second virtual interface same like I did for first one, but this time ping was success and where as in wireshark tool the MAC address for veth0 is picked by veth1. This is where I got stuck and this issue happened for all the remaining virtual interfaces.
I couldn't see any virtual interface showing their respective MAC address, as of the remaining except the first virtual interface has been picking the first veth0 mac address.

Is it possible to restrict root logons to the SSH server to just a single ip address (or maybe a range?) I have other users connecting to the server daily so restricting ALL access to a single ip i cannot do. I need root enabled (for my own reasons) but want to lock it down a bit more.

My workstation is on a network, let's say 10.100.0.0/24. I'm opening up an openVPN Tunnel to a test environment in my company, receiving a lot of routes to this network (address range 172.xx.yy.0). Everything is working fine so far. In this test environment I placed a number of virtual systems having their own private network (10.99.0.0/24). I have one machine in this virtual cluster which is able to forward incoming IP traffic to the others.
When I login to this gateway system, using the 172.xx.yy.zz address, I can logon to the others using the 10.99.aa.bb addresses. Fine so far. But I have to be able to call these machines with the 10.99.0.0/24 addresses from my laptop. So I tried to add a route like:
route add -net 10.99.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 172.xx.yy.zz
Unfortunately I received an error messages:
SIOCADDRT: No such process
According to the entries in other forum articles (Google helps in most cases), I have to add a host route first:
route add -host 172.xx.yy.zz gw 172.well.defined.dest

Recently I installed RedHat Enterprise 5 on a windows machine. The machine is configured to use DHCP, but I have been seeing some strange behavior if I do nslookup on the machine's IP:
[someuser@lin01 mydir]$ nslookup 10.5.x.x
Server: 10.10.x.xx
Address: 10.10.x.xx#53
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = xyz.something.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = lenovo-d1690047.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = pqdlds.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = lin01.mydomain.com.
Where only the last entry of [URL] is actually correct, how can remove the other entries? I spoke to my IT Manager and he cannot see these stale entries in the DNS (we are using windows AD)

I have set up a Virtual machine on a dedicated server from 1and1. I hoped to use a bridge to give the vm direct access to the internet but 1and1 do mac filtering and so the only option is to use NAT.
I used Virtual Machine Manager on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine at home to install Debain Lenny on the vm on the server using KVM and all went well. I put it on a virtual network 192.168.100.0 and i can access it from the host and i can access the internet from the guest using NAT that libvirt set-up.
I bought another ip address from 1and1 with the hope of forwarding packets to the new ip address 11.22.33.02 to the guest vm.
I have tried all sorts of routing rules using iptables without any success.
my virtual network is on virbr1 the guest ip is 192.168.100.50 my external network device is ip say 11.22.33.01 on eth0 with the secondary ip say 11.22.33.02 on eth0:1
Here are the latest rules i tried:
Quote:
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 11.22.33.02 -i eth0 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.100.50
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.100.50 -o eth0 -j SNAT --to-source 11.22.33.02
iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -i eth0 -o virbr1 -d 192.168.100.50 -m state --state NEW -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -t filter -i eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

I am currently having an issue attempting to set up a dedicated server for source games (TF2, CS:S, L4D2). The required port (27015), along with most others, appears closed to the rest of the world and upon a port scan with DMZ hosting on (therefore no router interference between the internet and my computer) only a few ports are open (80, 139, 443, 445). My ISP does not block ports so therefore the only issue I can find is with my computer running Ubuntu 11.04. I have ensured that all traffic is allowed via iptables and I can't think of anything else that would have ports closed.

I would like to enable the web app so that it could be browse from outside. I know there maybe some port forwarding process and some commands involved in order to do that. But I have no idea on the steps to do that.

Version 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.
So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.
My files are as follows:

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm having problems trying to assign it a static IP address. No matter what I put in the Preferences->Networking area (identifying the interface as Manual)... it still will query DHCP for an address if I run the dhclient command. I'm using to using ubuntu server where I just set the IP in the interfaces config file.

I am running my own Postfix mail server. Some time ago I noticed that most email was rejected because of the server's dynamic IP address. So I got a fixed IP address. However then I noticed that some mails got rejected due to failing the reverse DNS check. So my ISP told me to get a range of IP addresses and they could then create a PTR record for one of those addresses. That is now running but it turns out that the IP address used for the PTR record is a ... dynamic IP address. So Spamhaus PBL rejects my emails again.

I've very new to linux, so please excuse my ignorance. I am trying to setup a number of servers to authenticate against my Windows Server 2003 active directory. I have successfully done this with one computer (Dell Optiplex 755), but I can?t seem to get it to work with my servers (Dell PowerEdge R710). I am using Fedora 11. I have setup samba and pam and have successfully joined the network. Everything with winbind seems to be working properly and I can get all the user info, etc. When I log in with a local account, everything is fine. If I try to log in with an account from my domain through SSH, I see the message Code:/usr/bin/xauth: creating new authority file /home/apkelley/.XauthorityAfter that, nothing happens and it is as if I haven?t connected to anything. If I try to log into the actual server using the graphical interface, it starts logging me in, shows a blank screen for about a second, and then returns to the login screen as if nothing has happened.I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for how I might fix this problem or how to find out more information about the error. Here are my smb.conf and system-auth files:
/etc/samba/smb.conf
Code:

I have a dedicated control computer that can only be accessed with web-browser (with its ip-address). My DHCP-server gives a static ip-address to the control computer (base on its mac-address). Somehow and after some time the control computer looses its ip-address (can't ping to it any more) ... and then I have to reset the control computer to get it to pick up the ip-address ... this is not a good solution since the control computer is not nearby. is there a way to force the control computer to renew its ip-address based on its mac-address

My security software has picked up multiple port scanning detections on my router/network and only the IP addresses are available. Is it possible to find out what the remote mac address is to see if the IP source has been spoofed? I've got a couple of different IP sources which were found scanning my ports.
I don't know if my IP and the remote IP address are on the same network or subnet for that matter which is the reason for my wanting to know what the mac address is to find out if its coming from the same remote machine.
