Networking :: Accented Character Using Samba 3
Oct 10, 2010
I have a Linux Slackware 13.1 box running Samba 3.5.5. Stored on it are a bunch of files with accented characters in the name, they are stored on a Ext4 filesystem. The problem is that when I try to list the filenames from another Windows XP or Linux computer all accented characters in the filenames are replaced by underscores ( "_" )... Are there ways to get Samba to show the real accented characters instead of these underscore??

After some update, I cannot type accented characters in any KDE app. I'm using a spanish keyboard and I have checked that the system keyboard layout is set correctly. If I try to type a character like what I get instead is a "a".Non KDE apps work fine. Can it be a IBus related problem? By the way, I'm using IBus 1.3.99.20110608.

I am using a BTTV device. bt878 to be precise to watch TV on my ubuntu. I am using ntsc-cc to dump all VBI captioning on my terminal yet I notice for all accented characters they are mapped to something else.Yet if viewed under tvtime all those accented characters just simply got replaced by blanks.
I have chosen fr locale hoping to correct the situation but it changes nothing. Does anyone have any insight into this behaviour? Is there anyway to display the right character set?

I am having problems with using the evolution-mapi connector evolution-mapi-0.30.3-1.fc13.x86_64. Certain emails get stuck in the Outbox and return the message "Couldn't send message". I think that it is emails that use accented characters in the headers that get stuck, but these are near unavoidable in the environment I work in. Actually, I used davmail for several months, but after a change in the local proxy, I can't get it to work anymore.)

I am running Slackware64 v13.0 with XMonad as my window manager and dzen2 as my status bar. Sometimes I do my Spanish homework on this computer, and I would like to know the best way to get accented characters and other symbols. Normally, in desktop environments or proprietary OSs, there is a window I can open to select certain special characters. I don't have any of that on this system, and I need to know if there is a simple, minimal program that displays special characters like this or if there is another way to use them easily. I would prefer something light and without many dependencies (just because I prefer simpler software), but I'm open to other solutions if something like this is not available.

Since Feb 12, I am unable to enter accented characters on any application. I have a Spanish (Latin American) keyboard, where I have to press the accent key and then the vowel I want to have an accent. What happens is this: I press the diacritic key, and then the vowel, but NOTHING appears. Exceptionally, Java apps (eg. Netbeans) show a square with a question mark inside: Something else is strange. Normally, if you press the accent key twice, the diacritic appears by itself, ie. (I copy-pasted that). So, this works for the following accents: But not for these: The letters show fine on my machine, eg. in Nautilus, in Firefox; I am just unable to type them. There were some updates done by yum on the day this started happening, but I have no idea if that's the cause of all this... I tried undoing the update transaction but it failed.

I rip CDs using abcde and cdparanoia. The output MP3s have correct accents when I list them in a terminal.I then tag the songs using id3v2 from the command line wrapped in a script which outputs the tags to the screen as it writes. Again, the characters are there. However, when I read these tracks in any music player the accented characters are always corrupt. At what stage is this happening and how can I prevent it?

In Welsh, we have a variety of accented characters - 56 with diacritic marks. Most are fairly rare, and accessing them via the Character Map is not really a problem, although it does slow down typing. There is a superb utility, provided free, which works on Windows systems only, and which maps the commonest accented characters.
I am recycling old PCs, installing Ubuntu, and distributing them in a predominantly Welsh-speaking area, and would love to be able to set up the same pattern of keyboard shortcuts for users.I have looked at using the COMPOSE key, but that means up to 6 keystrokes. I have also looked at keyboard preferences, bindings, custom layouts etc, but feel a little bit out of my depth. It doesn't appear as if there is a simple solution to this. A bit of time asking around and using search engines would appear to indicate that nobody has cracked this problem for Ubuntu.
Naerly all users will have UK keyboards, and being bilingual will be content with that.Is there a simple way of adding the extra characters, via the keystrokes described, for i386 systems running Ubuntu 10.04, system-wide, in all applications, for all users?

What I want is to be able to type something like "camin" (with the accented ") in Emacs, and get it to work after latexing it. An alternative would be to type "cami'on", but the first alternative would be much better.
After googling it seems that this (or at least the second option) should be possible with not much hassle, but I just can't get it to work (maybe because I haven't got much sleep last week).

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.

when i am using win xp to logon on samba domain the windows XP does not load profiles from samba. I think that the problem is NTUSER.DAT storing in /home/user/profile
The same profile is working using samba 2.2.8 but not working in samba 3.5.3..

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Trying to connect to samba locally gives me this:

I tried to tag late onto a question similar to mine on stackoverflow (Find Non-UTF8 Filenames on Linux File System) to elicit further replies, with no luck so far, so here goes again... I have the same problem as the OP in the link above and convmv is a great tool to fix one's own filesystem. My question is therefore academic, but I find it unsatisfactory (in fact I can't believe) that 'find' is not able to find non standard ascii characters.
Is there anyone out there that would know what combination of options to use to find filenames that contain non standard characters on what seems to be a unicode FS, in my case the characters seem to be 8bits extended ascii rather than unicode, the files come from a Windows machine (iso-8859-1) and I regularly need to fetch them. I'd love to see how find and/or grep can do the same as convmv.

I have recently upgraded to a VPS for the purpose of web hosting a group of sites related to my business. The reason for the upgrade was because we wish to run a shopping cart software which required greater memory for PHP and the VPS was the most economic solution. So, I have very basic linux knowledge but I am the definition of a newbie when it comes to going further than just scratching the surface of server configuration! I have successfully hosted our main site for a number of weeks but recently the postfix service stopped sending mail. I have Plesk Control Panel installed and postfix continually shows as not started even though in SSH the service status is definitely running - I have gone through the troubleshooting checklist here (http://www.postfix-book.com/debugging.html#d0e6) but can't get any further than section 2.1 as when running the host command (#host relay-test.mail-abuse.org), I get # -bash: host:command not found. I've gone further in the document but not found any issues...
When postfix was working properly (i.e. sending emails!), the plesk CP showed the service as started and all emails from the website were sending as normal. The mailq command is showing the messages stuck in the mailq and the maillog shows the following:- http://pastebin.centos.org/36446 - these are the latest few pages. To check the configuration and basic elements I have flushed the mailq (which shows a stack of messages waiting) and I have also spent a long time (2 weeks) reading up on the parameters that should be in main.cf and master.cf.I have found that when I 'telnet localhost 25' I get the following response...[root@s15397216]# telnet localhost 25Trying 127.0.0.1...Connected to localhost.Escape character is '^]'.

Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

I recently have just started using linux and downloaded Fedora 10 and I'm trying to figure out how to fileshare and print share with my windows vista machine.I edited the registry file on my Vista machine HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetContro lLsaLMCompatibilityLevel and changed the level from 3 to 1.I've also gone through a lot of tutorials on editing the smb.conf file and set my workgroup name, netbios, and changed permissions on my linux machine (a Lenovo netbook) etc but thats about as far as I can get. This may sound like a dumb question but I can't even get samba to connect on my linux machine so how do I do that?
I was wondering if any of you guys can provide a solution as to how to connect or direct me to a good howto for setting up and using Samba seeing how I'm a noob.I've been on Samba.org already and I'm more confused than ever.

I have a small home network. Computers A and B are both running Kubuntu Lucid. Computer A has an external USB hard drive attached, partitioned ext3 and mounted to a folder in computer A's home folder. Computer C is running Vista. I installed Samba, and computer C can access all the files on both computers A and B. But using Samba, computers A and B can't see each other OR computer C. That's not really important to me, but they can't
So I installed NFS and got computers A and B talking that way. I like NFS better. It's faster than Samba. BUT, computer B can't access computer A's USB drive, and I need it to do that. When I'm using computer B and I click on the folder the drive is mounted to, the file manager just shows the folder as empty.

I installed 9.04 last fall on my computer (switching from Win XP). I wanted to make sure that it would work for the 2-PC LAN I share with my wife, so I left XP on her machine and set up samba. It worked adequately until I switched her over to 9.04 a few months ago, and I tinkered with it and also tried to install nfs, but without any luck.
Recently I decided to try again, so I started with nfs (as recommended for Ubuntu-only networks and spent several days trying to get it going, with no luck. The last few days I've been trying to get samba going, again with no luck. (I've spent hours and hours on sites offering help with nfs and samba, googling them and searching this forum, trying different tweaks to smb.conf, etc. I've made some progress -- and learned a lot about linux, but....)
So, I am convinced that if I can clean out everything samba (and maybe nfs?), and start over, I just might be able to get back to some productive work.I've been learning a bit about using the terminal, but it would be very helpful to know the exact commands to use (I had to google "foo" today to understand what a site was trying to convey with a sample command.)
